RIGID FUMIGATION
Surgeon Sailelle Will Look After tta

LETTERS fIISINFBCIED FOR FIVE HOOKS
Superintendent Terrell Say* That He is Doing
the Beat He CanrUader Existing Cir
cnmataaoee.
Surgeon SawteUe, of the United
States marine hospital service, yester
day took charge of the fumigation of
mails in Atlanta, says the Constitu
tion, and hereafter ail mails will be
fumigated under <the direction of the
marine service.
change means that the fumiga
tion will be moreetriet. The govern
ment officials will jab bigger holes in
letters and soak them longer in the
fames of formaMetoyde gas than here
tofore, for the Montgomery people
mast be convinced that we are fun. i
gating the mails and killing all the
fever germs that they believe to be in
the mail from this place.
Dr. Drake,of the Southern railway,
will have immediate charge of the fu
migating, but wiU be under supervi
sion of Dr. Sawtelie. The force of
> clerks wilt be furnished by the post
office as heretofore. All mail will be
fumigated and no letters will get off
to the west that have not been thor
oughly punched and disinfected of
imaginary germs.
Five hours is the minimum time for
the letters to stay in the fumigating
racks. All mails will ibe allowed to
remain in the reeks with the fumes of
the gas permeating it for just that
length of time, and no mail will be al
lowed to go out of theeity that has
not been in the gas fames for five
hours. This is regarded as a very
long time by some of the doctors, but
the marine hospital officials are very
strict, and while they recognize the
fact that the fumigation is a mere
matter of form they say that it must
be a thorough formality. None but
the people ot Montgomery have ever
urged the necessity of fumigating
the Atlanta mail. They believe that
Atlanta is full of the plague, and
nothing would induce them to receive
mail that did not bear the evidence of
fumigation.
The Montgomery people would not
take the word of the postofflce au
thorities here as to |ne fumigation.
They demand that each car of mail
shall bear a certificate signed by the
surgeon of the marine hospital ser
vice, to the effect that the mail has
been thoroughly fumigated. A lot of
certificates have been printed and
will be sent out with every car.
There has been considerable com
plaint regarding the mail services.
The New Orleans Times-Democrat
published an editorial saying that the
service was a disgrace to the United
States. When Colonel Terrell’s atten
tion was called to the editorial, he
said that he knew that the service
was very poor, but that it was not
due to the officials of the service.
He said he was instructed to conform
to the quarantine rules of all health
bodies, municipal, state and marine,
and that be could not do as The Times-
Democrat advocated and overrun the
the quarantine set up by the different
cities.
As a matter of fact Superintendent
Terrell is perfectly helpless. He has
orders from Washington which he
must obey and he is doing the best
The murderer who, at dead of night,
creeps, stealthily out to bury the dead and
mangled body of his victim inspires men
with horror and dread. There is a murderer
abroad who yearly slays one-sixth of all the
human race who go down to untimely deaths.
This dread monster is called consumption.
The approach of consumption is slow and
insidious. First there is a slight disorder
of the digestion. The appetite is poor and
the nourishing properties of the food are not
properly assimilated. The blood becomes
thin and impure. The body begins to starve.
Old tissues of the body are not properly re
placed by new. The lung tissues are not
Sroperly nourished and are inert and half
ead. In this condition they offer a good
•oil for the germs of consumption which
invade and attack them.
This operation is promptly reversed by
Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery. It
invigorates the digestion and appetite and
makes assimilation perfect. It builds up
and purifies the blood. It makes new and
healthy tissue to replace the old, inert mat
ter which it causes to be carried off. It
drives out all disease-germs. Thousands of
cases given up as hopeless have been cured.
Miss Laura Piersei, of East Bethlehem, Wash
ington Co., Pa., writes: “I must write you tel
ling you of the great benefit derived from the use
of your ‘Golden Medical Discovery.’ Last sum
mer my friends thought I was surely going into
consumption, and having tried doctors with no
satisfactory results and henring your medicine so
highly spoken of, I took one bottle. My cough
left me together with all the distressing symp
toms, ami m ftict the cure seemed almost mirac
ulous to all who saw me."
, Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant Pell' tn are tiny,
•ugnr-coated granules that are an unfailing
and permanent cure for constipation.

THE WAY
TroatinK I»y*repsia aMI IndlgMtion by
'Dieting h BariMHMM*u<t‘UMilesS Oue.
We say the old way, but really it is a
eery common one at ipresent time and
many dyspeptics and physicians as well
Consider the first step 'to take in attempt
ing to cure indigestion is to diet, either
by selecting certain funds and rejecting
others or to greatly Awninish the quantity
usually taken, in other -words the starve*
tion plan is by many supposed to be the
first essential.
The almost certain failure of the star
vation cure for dyapepia has been proven
time and again, but -still the moment
Dyspepsia makes its appearance a course
utf dieting is at once advised.
All this is radically wrong. It is
foolish and unscientific to recommend
dieting or starvation to a man suffering
from Dyspepsia, because Indigestion
itself starves every organ and every nerve
and every fibre in the body.
What the Dyspeptic wants is abund
ant nutrition, which means plenty of.
goed, wholesome, well-eooked food and
something to assist the -weak stomach
to -digest it. This is exactly the purpose
for which Stuart’s Dyspqpsia Tablets are
adapted and this is the method by which
they cure the worst cases of Dyspepsia,
in oJher words the patient eats plenty of
whoteesome food aud Stuart’s Dyspepsia
Tablets digest it for him. In this way
the system is nourished and the over
worked stomach rested, because the
tablets will digest the food whether the
stomac* works or not. One of these
tablets will digest 3,000 grains of meat
or eggs.
Your-druggists will tell you that Stu
art’s Dyspepsia Tablets is the purest and
safest remedy sold for stomach troubles
and every trial makes one more friend
for this excellent preparation. Sold at

SCHOONER BRYANT LOSTf?
Grave Fears Are Kntertafned For the
A lai kan Vessel’s Safety.
Port Townsend, Wash., Sept. 30.
The tug Holyoke arrived from St.
Michaels, having left ou Sept. 11 with
the schooner J. Bryant in tow. On
Sept. 21, while off Kodiak island, a
heavy storm prevailed and the tug was
forced to heave to for 28 hours. During
the storm the hawser, which connected
the schooner to the tug, parted and the
Bryant went adrift, nor could those ou
the tug afterward see her.
While it is not thought the Bryant
has been lost, grave fears for her safety
are entertained. She carried a crew ot
seven men and two passengers. The
reason given for the probable safety ot
the Bryant is that she was known ad
one of the best sea boats in north Pa
cific waters. She is of 555 tons meas
urement, and was for many years used
as a pilot boat off Cape Flattery and the
Columbia river bar. Captain Klinger
of the Holyoke says the Bryant may be
expected to sail up the straits at any
time.
Captain Thomas Powers of the Eliza
Anderson returned from Dutch Harbof
on the Holyoke. He indignantly denies
the report that the Eliza Anderson will
leave her bones where she now lies, but
that the old craft will be on the sound
and Alaska run next season, as the
scarcity of fuel is all that prevented
him bringing her back to the sound
now.
The Holyoke people say’the report
that there are three tons of gold at St.
Michaels awaiting shipment to the
sound on the steamer Portland Is un
true. Travel from St Michaels up the
Yukon was still going on when the
Holyoke left, but the river is not ex
pected to remain open longer than Oct.
10. The people of St. Michaels are well
provided with the necessities of life for
winter aud many of them are engaged
in building boats, which will be oper
ated on the river next season.

Marriage In Atlant* of Great I a tercet, To
• Ro tn ace.
The marriage of Miss Idolene Edwards
to Mr. Lewman in Atlanta, Wednesday
evening, was of great interest to Romans.
Miss Edwards has been a frequent visitor
here, and was a great social favorite.
The Constitution says of her marriage:
The first-ot the autumn engagements
was happily concluded last night in the
wedding of Miss Idolene Edaardsand
Mr. Leon iE>. Lewman. The marriage
ceremony was performed at St. Philip's
church by Rev. Dr. McCormick in the
presence es a large assembly of friends
and acquaintances and was an occasion
of brilliancy and happiness.
Simple elegance in decoration which
will characterize the exclusive social
functions es the season was carried out
i i the taste and appropriateness in the
church decorations. Beautiful palms
were placed within the chancel rail and
ferns of exquisite delicacy were grace
fully arranged upon the altar.
The bride wove an elegant gown of
ivory white satin simply fashioned with
draperies of chiffon softening the cor
sage. She carried bride roses and lilies
of the valley and her tule veil was
caught gracefully in the meshes of her
dark hair. The bridesmaids wore lovely
gowns of organdie over silk, three wear
ing pink and Wares white and the maid
of honor wore white taffeta silk and
carried white roses. The bridesmtfids
carried shower bouquets of pink and
white roses with streamers of pink and
white ribbon.
The bride as Miss Idolene Edwards
has since her debut been an admired
.beauty. She is of the queeuly type and
her grace of bearing and manner dis
tinguish her as the young woman of
birth, position and social charms. She
is the daughter of the late Shelton Ed
wards, of Atlanta, and numbers among
her relatives representatives from
among the most prominent families of
the state. It is a source of regret that
her residence in Atlanta will be only
temporary, since Mr. Lewman’s busi
ness will call him elsewhere.
Mr. Lewman is a native of Kentucky
and has resided in Louisville up to
about a year ago, since which time he
has lived in Atlanta. He nas made a
number of friends here in his business
relations and those social, and possesses
all the qualities that entitle him to suc
cess in both,
Mr. and Mrs. Lewman will be in At
lanta till January, when they will go to
Europe for a year’s visit.
