OYER ONE HUNDRED
Applicants For State Librarian and As
sistant By th® Droves.
VERY FEW HAVE BEEN MADE PUBLIC
Over Half of Thom ar* Women—App ioatione
Written I nd o al From Everv Sec-
tion of the State.
Ov.r a hundred people have asked
Governor Atkinson to appoint them
state librarian or assistant state libra
rian says the Atlanta Commercial.
The majority of these applicants are
women.
With this goodly number to select
from, the governor will make his ap
pointment in about a month. In the
meantime there will doubtless be other
-applicants for these two places.
The papers have mentioned only a few
-of these applicants. The governor has
received many applications verbally and
otherwise about which the public knows
nothing, for the chief executive has
■firmly refused to give out the names of
the applicants.
“A great menyof them, in fact over
half of them are women,” the governor
.said when asked for their names, “and
as all of them but two will have to be
disappointed, I don’t want to parade
'their names before the public.’*
* ‘About how many applications have
you received, governor?’’ a Commercial
reporter asked him,
Everybody Can Fill It.
*T would not exaggerate a bit were I
to say that there are over a hundred.”
st'ae governor said. “Yon see it is a place
which nearly everybody imagines they
can fill People from all over the state
want it.”
Gover Atkinson has decided not to ap
point the assistant librarian himself,
but will delegate that power of ap
pointment to the librarian.
Who this will inhere can be nothing
but speculation. open candidates
; are Captain Milledge, the present in
cumbent, Colonel Douglass Glessner, of
Griffin, Mrs. Ellen Dortch-Longstreet
and Editor Brown, of Newnan,
Mrs, Longstreet Returns Soon.
Mrs. Longstreet returns from Porter
Springs, where she spent her honey
mom, about Sunday, and will again en
ter actively upon her duties as assistant
librarian. She will make the race warm
for Captain Milledge and others.
Captain Miiledge has a fine endorse
ment from the old soldiers of the state,
the bench and bar and the yonng militia.
Editors Brown ani Glessner are rely
ing strongly upon the governor’s per
- sonal friendship for them.
The other hundred candidates are
waiting and hoping.

REV. SAW JONES' BIRTHDAY.
Will Celebrate the Fiftieth One In Carters
ville On October 16th .
Sam Jones is a unique character.
Everything he does is original. Even
his birthday parties are different from
those of other people.
The great Georgia evangelist is to
give a birthday party next month.
The event will be in celebration of bis
fiftieth birthday. He will be fifty
years old on October 16th.
Birthday anniversaries are usually
p'ain, uninteresting family affairs, at
which big heavy dinners are served
and a few more or less valuable pres
ents given. Mr. Jones intends to vary
the fashionable birthday party. He is
tired of such monotonous events. He
has celebrated about forty-eight ot
the usual every day birthday anni
versaries.
Each man of the fifty will represent
one of the fifty years of the evangelist’s
life. There will be one guest for every
year of his life. The guests will be
from every part of the United States.
They will be the most intimate and
distinguished friends of Mr. Jones
and the gathering will certainly be
remarkable from every standpoint.
Some of the brainiest men in the
country have been invited and the
party will be one of the wittiest and
brightest that could be gathered to
gether.
This novel entertainment will be
like others in only one respect. It will
be very elaborate and will be a very
dignified occasion. Mrs. Jones has
been preparing for the entertainment
tor several months. Her husband
■ has for a long time wanted to give an
entertainment of this kind and be de
cided that at this anniversary he
would do so.

LOW RIVER AND ITS CAUSE.
Atlant* Robbing flbattafeoocbee River And
Thereby Injuring Columbua.
The Columbus Enquirer-Stan pub
lishes the following::
“The condition of the Chattahoo
chee river is truly alarming so far as
Columbus is concerned and itbehooves
the business men of this eity to take
some step, if possible, to bring about
an improvement. The river is lower
than it has ever been in tbe history of
the city, and it is probable that it will
be as low each succeeding year, and
it msj be, even lower.
“It is averred by those who have
long been observers of the river„ that
that the ehief cause of its present
state is tbe drain of the water works
of the eity of Atlanta. It is alleged
that the mains of that city take, each
day. from the Chattahoochee, no less
than seven million gallons of water,
whieb is not turned back into the
stream, but flows off in other chan
nels,
“If this be true Columbus is suffer
ing great injustice at the hands of At
lanta, an injustice which promises to
rob this city of much of its commer
cial importance, inasmuch as the wa
ter power furnished by the river has
been a great factor in tbe upbuilding
of tbe city.
“The boats cannot come within
many miles of Columbus, owing to
the low water, a condition which
stops a valuable avenue of the city’s
trade. The cotton mills of Colambus
are not able to run on full time dur
ing the day and are forced to operate
part of their machinery by day and
the other part by night.
‘ These facts are sufficient to con
vince every one that Cdlumbus is in
danger, and whatever the cause may
be, immediate effort should be made
to find a remedy and have it enforced.
The attention of tbe board of tri de
and of all Columbus business men it
invited to consider the menace to
the city’s welfare. ”
