The Poor Fool Conld Not See That He
Had Her Won.
Reginald Hanseomb stopped in the
hall and nervously fumbled at the rim
of his hat, meanwhile gazing into Po
cahontas Poindexter’s eyes with a fond
ness that the beautiful girl could not
mistake.
He opened his lips as if about to
speak, but the words that he sought to
utter would not come, and the fair
maiden gave a low, sweet sigh that
was calculated to fill his heart with
blowholes.
Yet he stood there, and she stood in
front of him, looking and longing and
wondering why he hesitated.
Once she was almost tempted to takd
him back into the parlor and tell him
that it was all right; that she knew
how he felt about it, and that she
would just take it for granted without
the usual formality. But her maiden
modesty rose in rebellion, and she said
to herself:
“No. If he is too timid, toocowardly,
to say the words, it will perhaps be bet
ter for us both if we take diverging
ways. ’ ’
Then, speaking aloud, she said:
“Well, good night, Mr. Hanseomb,
if you must be going. ” ,
“Well, good night,” he said. “I
guess I must be going. ”
“Well, good night, ” she said again,
holding the door open for him.
“Well, good night,” he said, passing
out through the vestibule.
She shut the door with a bang and
sat down upon the stairway and buried
her face in her hands and sobbed.
But half a minute later she heard
him returning. Her heart gave a glad
leap, and she rushed to the door to ad
mit him.
He stood looking down into her
sweet, expectant face for a moment aft-

STATE NORMAI. COLLEGE '
Will Not Be Removed to The Arsenal At
Augusta.
Atlanta. Ga., Oct. 6.—lt apperrs to
dav that the plan to move the State Nor
mal College from Athens to Augusta
and locate it upon the arsenal property
there is ont of the question.
State School Commissioner Glenn,
who is a member of the board of trus
tees of the normal school, who has been
investigating the proposition, has re
ceived a letter from Gen. Flagler, chief
of the ordnance department <f the
army, at Washington, which puts a
quietus on the movement.
Prof. Glenn, who was very favor
ably impressed with the idea, wrote to
the Secretary of War, suggesting the
use of the arsenal property for the State
Normal School, inasmuch as it ap
peared to the projectors of the scheme
that the government had no use for its
Augusta station. In reply to this com
munication, which was referred to him,
Gen. Flagler has written to Commis
sioner Glenn that the government con
siders the Augusta arsenal au exceed
ingly important station, and,in effect he
says the proposition to surrender it for
use as a state school would not be con
sidered for a moment.
Prof. Glenn said today, in speaking
of his correspondence with the war de
partment, that it now seemed that the
movement to take the normal college
away from Athens was likely to come
to an end, as Atlanta has not seemed to
‘catch on, ” and the Augusta plan was
disconcerted.

MISTRIAL FOR M’CULLOUGH.
Another Jury Tn the Khitioiii Wife Mur
der t.'Hse balh to Aijree.
Jonesboro, Ga., Oct. 7. —The jury in
the case of John McCullough, charged
with the murder of his wife, after be
ing ont all day, was unable to reach a
verdict and Judge Candler declared a
mistrial. The jury stood seven for con
viction and five for acquittal. This is
the second mistrial in the case and it is
now believed it will be difficult to ever
securts a verdict m Clayton county.
Sensational rumors are afloat to the
effect that one of the jurors may be
prosecuted for perjury. It is certain
that au investigation will be made into
the renort that has gained currency to
the effect that one of the jurors said be
fore he was chosen that he would stick
out forever or see McCullough acquitted
if he should happen to get on the jury.
The jury commissioners wi.l make an
investigation of this rumor and if they
find it to be true, they will at once
throw the name of the juror out <>t the
jury box and steps, will probably be
taken to prosecute him for perjury.
