Poor
Blood
When a horse is poor in flesh,
a new harness won’t give him
strength. If a house is cold
new furniture won’t warm it.
If your strength is easily ex
hausted; work a burden;
nerves weak; digestion poor;
muse'es soft; if you are pale
and worn out; the trouble is
with the blood. It is not so
much IMPURE blood as
POOR blood. Pills won’t
make this blood rich; nor will
bitters, nor iron tonics, any
more than a new harness will
give strength to the horse, or
new furniture will make a
house warm. For poor blood
you want something that will
make rich blood.

“Cruelty In the Kongo Free State” is
the title of a paper made up from the
journals of the late E. J. Glave in The
Century. Mr. Glave says: Toyo, the
boy I engaged of Sims, is more differ
ent kinds of an ass than any one I have
met for several moons. The other day,
after cooking something in the frying
pan, he placed the sooty side on the
drum of my banjo. I do not understand
his language very well, but from ges
ture and disgusted look it ought to have
been clear to him that I objected to that
sort of untidiness. When I threw off
the frying pan, he took it up carefully,
wiped the sooty part with a cloth I had
given him to clean plates with, and
then put it back on the banjo. He has
made tea in my coffeepot without re
moving the coffee grounds? He walks
into my room without taking off his
hat or removing his. pipe. He is ugly,
slow and has no more intelligence than s
nock. I found him wearing a hat which
I had given him to carry, and wiping
his sweaty face on my towel. What
service he could have rendered Sims’
mission I do not know.

REPORT ON BOOKS READY.
School Im listlicvwil to Oppose
the Uniiorio Syeteiu.
Atlanta, Oct. 7.—The school book
commission appointed by Governor At
kinson, pursuant to au act of the legis
lature, passed at the last session, will
hold a meeting here next week for the
purpose of considering the report which
is to be made at the coming meeting of
the general assembly. State School
Commissioner Glenn has been at work
on this report for a month past. He
has had written statements made to
him by all the other members of the
commission embodying their views, and
the report, which is to be passed upon
at the meeting next week, is supposed
to represent these views
It is not probable that the commission
will recommend a uniform system of
text books for the schools o's the state,
but on the Contrary, the report will
probably oppose the uniform system,
pointing out the objections they have
found against this system. Neither
wid the commission recommend a per
manent school book commission.
The principal recommendation of the
committee will probably be that the
state buy the school books from the pub
lishers direct and distribute them at
.cost price to the schools through the
county school superintendents. It is
claimed that 20 per cent can bo saved
the patrons of the schools by this pian.

Before a London police justice a pro
fessional beggar told an interesting story
of his methods. He admitted haunting
the neighborhoods whgre religious
meetings were held, and he appealed to
women coming from these meetings
with the quotations: “The Lord loveth
a cheerful giver. ” “Those who give to
the poor, lend to the Lord. ” “The birds
of the air have nests, the foxes have
holes, but, like the Son of Man, I have
nowhere to lay my head. ” , The prison
er said that he found this method very
effective, especially in the winter
months, when women wore thick gloves
and could not tell the difference be
tween a penny and a half crown.

There are two critical and even dangeious
periods in female life, when the greatest
care is necessary.
The first, when the girl passes from child
