Disarranged.
MANY COMPANIES CANCELLING DATES
The Yellow Fever Epidemic and Kixld
Quarantines Stop Many Theatrical
Companies From Coming South.
The yellow fever has rung down the
drop curtain on theatrical troupes
and the southern circuit has been
seriously interrupted, says the Con
stitution.
Unless other contracts are arranged
Allan tq will miss the best attractions
on the road this year. Should the
yellow fever scare not abate their will
be a dearth of good productions here.
Already the (companies are cance
ling their dates and there is no saying
Where it will end. Atlanta is directly
connected with New Orleans in a
theatrical way, and the two towns
are closely joined in the character of
attractions. Klaw& Erlanger, which
house controls many of the contracts,
operates two theaters in New Orleans,
one in Memphis, one in Mobile and
one Nashville The Lyceum manage
ment makes New Orleans beadquar
ters and most of the companies radiate
from that point.
The situation at present. Texas is cut
off entirely and not only is there a state
quarantine, but small towns have quar
antined against each other, making it
impossible to get between Qallas. Gal
veston, Houston, or any * other points in
that state. This is another feature of
the situation which gives a gloomy out
look to the theater men.
Up to the present time Atlanta has
caught no big attractions, but Man
ager DeGive, of the Grand, and Man
ager Sharp, of the Lyceum, have both
a long list for the months of OctobA
and November, and some of the com
panies are among the_most notable on
the road.
' ’’Thus far only two have canceled
dates,” said Mr. L. DeGive yesterday
afternoon. ‘ The ‘Black Sheep’ is one
of these. We will have many attrac
tions during the next few weeks, but
under tbe present circumstances Ido
not know what will 'come. We may
be able to arrange matters should the
quarantine in Alabama remain as it is
now, it looks now, however, that
the circuit is badly disarranged.

needs above all other qualifications—good
health. Without good health, he may be
naturally shrewd, bright and capable, but he
will eventually fail. It takes a keen brain
and steady nerves to be successful. Impure
blood will befog the brightest brain and
shake the steadiest nerves.
The greatest known blood-maker and
purifier is Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Dis
covery. It corrects all disorders of the di
gestion, tones the liver, makes the appetite
keen and assimilation perfect. Consequent
ly the blood is plentifully supplied with
the elements of nutrition and the body is
properly nourished. It cures 98 per cent,
of all cases of consumption. All good

H. Gaddis, Esq., of No. 313 S. J. Street, Tacoma,
Washington, writes: -“I was taken ill in Feb
ruary. 1592, with headache and pain in my back.
I called in a doctor and he came three times.
He said I was bilious, but I kept getting worse.
1 took a cough so that I could only sleep when
propped up in bed. My lungs hurt me and I got
so poor that I was just skin and bone. 1 thought
I was going to die. I tried a bottle of Doctor
Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery and it did hie
so much good that I tried another one and it
made me strong and well. It saved my life."

In the above appointments Mrs. Myrick
has chosen two of the most representa
tive women in the Georgia Press Club
and their presence will be a distinguish*.
ed addition to the body of prominent
women to assemble in Rome next month.
This meeting of the state federation
will be one notable in many respects. It
marks the first year’s success of one of
the strongest woman’s organization in
in the south and one that has already
made its power felt in Georgia. As the
development of all educational interests
in the state has been made the principle
of the federation movement, that subject
will be ably discussed by brilliant and
representative women. The interest of
the press women throughout the state is
urged, since it is in their power not alone
to aid in the development of the federa
tion work, but to broaden its scope in
every way by accurate publication of its
various meetings and the leading features
making them of interest.

•certifies that Dr. King’s New Disc >very

of a Cough of two years standing, caused
by La Grippe, by Dr. King’s New Dis
covery. B F Merrill, Baldwinsville,
Mass., says that he has used and recom
mended it and never knew it to fail and
would rather have it than any doctor,

Greeks as Fighters.
Smolensk! had placed a battery of
mountain guns on a plateau overlooking
the village a? Velestino, and along the
base of this plateau was a battalion of
Evzones, sheltered by the position of
the ground and by intrenchments. The
battery on the plateau played on the
Turkish advance with great effect, and
the order was given by the Turkish
commander to charge it. The Turkish
infantry swung clear, and the cavalry,
led by a young officer, came on in col
umn, first at the trot and then at a
swinging gallop. It seemed a mad un
dertaking far cavalry to charge a bat
tery of well served artillery planted on
the crest of a long, steep slope.
The bravij horsemen were met with
salvos of shells which plowed through
their ranks. Then suddenly uprose the.
Evzones from their partially hidden
cover and poured upon them volley after
volley. No troops could withstand such
fire, and, completely broken, the Turk
ish horsemen turned and sought shelter
in the woods in the neighborhood of
Bisomylos. “With the Greeks In
Thessaly,” by’W. Kinnaird Rose.
Fads la Medicine.
There’ard fads in medicine as in every
thing else and a “new thing” frequently
sells for a short time simply because it is
new. But in medicine, as in nothing else,
the people demand and will be satisfied
only with positive, absolute merit. The
fact that Hood’s Sarsaparilla has stood its
griund against all competition, and its
sales have never wavered but have re
mained steadily at the top, demonstrates,
beyond any doubt, the intrinsic virtues
of this medicine. The new things have
come and gone but Hood’s Sarsaparilla
rests upon the solid foundation of abso
lute merit and its power to cure, and its
sales continue to be the largest in the
W ;rld.
A Patent Office Incident.
The patent office official bowed po
litely from his place at his desk as the
visitor in clothes of cleric cut and a
smooth face greeted him with a subdued
“Good morning, sir. ”
“Good morning,” responded the offi
sial, with a cheerful, $l5O a month
manner. “Is there anything we can do
for you this morning?”
“I don’t know really, sir, ” crooned
the caller softly. ‘‘ To know if you can
is the object of my visit this morning,
tir. ”
“Very well, state your case, and if
we can do anything for you you may
rest assured it will be done. ”
The visitor cleared his throat pretty
muoh as if he were going to deliver a
sermon.
“I think,” he said slowly and with
hesitation, “if I mistake not, that I
saw a statement in some one of the pub
lic prints to the effect that this office
would not issue a patent on Sunday. Is
that true, sir?”
“Quite true. It does not. ”
“Why is that, sir, if I may ask?”
“It is against the rules of the office is
all I know. ’ ’
“Will it issue one on any other day
of the seven, sir?”
“Certainly it will. That is what it
is here for. ’ ’
“Oh, thank you, how nice,” twitter
ed the visitor, taking a large madras
handkerchief from his coattail pocket,
shaking it out and wiping 'his brow
withit. “That being the case, if you
will be kind enough to let me have one
on Tuesday, sir, you will do me a great
personal favor. You see, sir, Tuesday is
my birthday, and I want a patent on it
so no one can use it for birthday pur
poses, sir, except myself.”—Washing

They Are Sensitive.
The sensitiveness of the families of
distinguished men as to the early oc
cupations of their ancestors is some
what remarkable. Recently an author
was asked to write a brief history of
the life of a man who had done service
to his state. Like Lincoln, this man had
been a woodchopper, a fact to which
his historian gave prominence.
“Don’t say he was‘a woodchopper, ’ ”
said the spokesman of the family.
“That will never do. ”
* ‘ What 1 say then?’ ’ asked the
author.
“Say—let me see now. Just say that
he was connected \vith the lumber busi
ness. ” —Atlanta Constitution.
The Shakers of Mount Lebanon, a
community of simple, honestj, God-fear

Shaker Digestive Cordial for many years,
and it is always the same, simple, honest,
curative medicine that has helped to
make the Shakers the healthy, long-lived
people that they are. The Shakers never
have indigestion. This is partly owing
to their simple mode of life, partly to
the wonderful properties of Shaker Di

by the stomach glands not supplying
enough digestive juice. Shaker Deges

Shaker Dicestive Cordial invigorates
the stomach and all its glands so that
after awhile they don’t need help. As
evidence of the honesty of Shaker Di

STRUCK. A SNAG,
Worth County Authorities Have Trouble
With Tneir Convicts
Atlanta, Oct. 7.--Tne county author
ities of Worth county struck a snag
when they undertook to remove twenty
seven misdemeanor convicts from the
two private camps.of Tatiim and Greer
Bros.' Sheriff H. T. Story went to tbe
camps armed with an order from County
Judge J. J. McDowell, authorizing the
removal of the convicts to ths county
jail, but he went away without the pris
oners. Greer Bros, refused to release
the men, and so did Tatum, when the
sheriff went to that camp. The reason
given was that they had paid the fines of
the men, thus complying with the sen
tences, and that this ended the relations
of the prisoners with the court and the
sheriff.
Tbe point seemed to be well taken,
and though two Weeks have elapsed,
the county authorities have made no
further effort to take the convicts to
jail
• Lawyers who have discussed the
matter freely expressed tbe opinion
that the judge cannot order the men
to jail after their fines have been I
paid, but they say a habeas corpus
would release everyone of the men de
tained at these camps.
If they have contracted with Ta
tum and Greer Bros, to work out the
amount of fines advanced the con
tract might be binding in a civil ac
tion, but personal detention could not
be enforced or justified in court.
It is said that a great many of the
misdemeanor convicts in private
camps are held under a similar ar
rangement by the payment of fines.
Greer Bros, work misdetneonor con
victs very extensively. They have a
saw mill at Dakota, in Dooly county, and
have another camp in worth. A'to
gether they work 175 convicts.
Tatum has a turpentine camp in Worth
county and wo'rks thirty-five or forty
misdemeanor convicts.
It seems that no one can act in the
matter but a prisoner or some moving
in his behalf. The prisoners are work
ing off on the roads and people are loth
to stir up trouble for th»ir neighbors, so
it is possible that the convicts do not
know that they are illegally detained. '
