I A Rome iu«n is ebarged with shoot-
ing a policeman’s brother in Atlanta.
! The following is clipped from Suu-
1 day’s Constitution:
“Robert L. Sheridan, a brother of
H Policeman Sheridan, lies at the Grady
’ hospital with a bullet hole in his left
and the man who shot him, J. W.
; Corley, is locked up at the police bar-
> t meks with a suspicious hole in the
right pocket of his trousers.
The story of the shooting, as it has
fe, baen told to the police department
and to a reporter of the Constitution,
SA makes the affair very peculiar. Last
night between 11 and 12 o’clock Sheri
dan and Corley were talking" together
■ appeared to be engaged in a quar
, rel. At the same time there were six
| or seven other men and they also ap
peered to be in a wrangle of some kind
’which threatened momentarily to
.break out into an ugly row. Corley
seemed to be drinking. J
In the midst of the row a pistol
shot suddenly rang out and Sheridan
K- ’ » staggered and fell backward. No one
S' could tell who fired the shot, and no
“pistol was seen in the crowd, j
A few minutes after the sho< ting
Patrolman Tom Ivy, who lives near
the place where it occured, stepped
I oiit of his gate and met Corley, who
>■' said:
R; There has been some shooting on
Marietta street,at the corner of Pine.”
Ivy noticed that Corley held some
thing in his hand and thought at first
■i. ; that it was a pistol, but a closer ex
amination revealed a bottle of corn
' ' liquor. The officer and Corley went
to the scene of the shooting and there
Ivy ascertained that Corley was the
man. suspected of firing the pistol.
Corley was arrested and sent to the
: barracks. The ambulance was
for and Sheridan carried
t._ to the Grady hospital.
& When Corley was searched at the
•>'' barracks it was discovered that be had
a hole in the right pocket of his
PP trousers, that seemed to have been
made by a pistol ball. It was burned
K about the edges and was blacked with
| powder smoke. It seemed clear that
Corley had fired the pistol at Sheridan
while he kept the weapon in his pock
et. He must have thrown the pistol
. away afterdards. He denied that he
was guilty and stated he was from
Rome, Ga., where he had been on the
; fire department. He will be held for
assault with intent to murder.
Sheridan’s wound, which is in the
f ' left thigh, while very painful is not
serious. He could r.ot say why Corely
should have tried to kill him, as he
was acting as a peacemaker between
JI Corley and the rest of the crowd.’’ '
Nothing is known, or can be learned
of Corley’s trouble in Rome. He
drove the reel for Fire Company No.
2 for some months, and then resigned
to go back to his trade as a moulder.
He left Rome about two months ago.
Catarrh in a Disease
Which requires a constitutional remedy.
It cannot be cured by local applications.
Hood’s Sarsaparilla is wonderfully suc
cessful in curing catarrh because it
eradicates from the blood the scrofulous
taints which cause it. Sufferers with
catarrh find a cure in Hood’s Sarsa
parilla, even after other remedies utterly
fail.
Hood’s Pills are prompt, efficient, al
ways reliable, easy to take, easy to

BLOW AT THIS MAYOR
The Meaning of The Recent Municipal Elec
tion in Atlanta.
Rome people will be interested to
learn just what Atlanta’s recent city
electioh meant, and it seems that Mayor
Collier and bis adherents got something
of a drubbing.
There is little doubt? that the mayor
was a large issue ini the fight. He has
been the most aggressive head of the
municipality that the present generation
has encountered, and, in consequence, a
whole stock of knives have been un
sheathed for him almost from the com
mencement of bis administration last
January. Two of the widest gaping
wounds which were partially avenged
were the fight against the consolidated
street railway for transfer led by Mayor
Collier and the summary abolition of
the board of education, which was ac
complished by council at his dictation.
Since these things happened the ag
grieved ones have been patiently lying
ing in wait for »he mayor’s sclap.
As a result of this ambuscade three
members of the old board of education,
who were fired out of office by the nape
of their necks, so to speak, by Mayos
Collier’s order, landed in the council
chamber says an Atlanta special to the
Savannah News. The hoard of education
was made an issue, and the teachers,'
whose salaries the mayor ordered cut
down st the commencement of the year,
with their friends and the adherents of
the old board, rallied to the support of
their candidates. That they will make
themselves felt whenever they get an
opportunity to rap the mayor’s head
goes without saying.
Messrs. Thompson, Muyson and Ham
mond are these members. Besides their
election as avowed enemies of the ad
ministration, the other six successful
ones are also declared to be straight anti-
Collier men, to whose election the Con
solidated Railway company, through
Joel Hurt, contributed its powerful
effort. In short the anti-administration
faction declares that the election was a
complete Waterloo for the mayor, and
the prediction is made that he will have
a rocky road to travel in dealing with
the new council.

A GOOD THING
For Women to Kememb-r,
That in addressing Mrs. Pinkham they
are communicating with a woman—a
woman whose experience in treating
woman’s ills is greater than that of any
living physician—male or female.
A woman can talk freely to a woman
when it is revolting to relate her private
troubles to man—besides,a.man does not
understand—simply because he is a
man.
Many woifaen suffer in silence and
drift along from bad to worse, knowing
full well that they should have im
mediate assistance, but a natural mod
esty impels them to shrink from expos
ing themselves to the questions and
probable examinations of even their
family physician. It is unnecessary.
Without money or price you can consult
a woman, whose knowledge froiji actual
experience is greater than any local
physician living.
The following invitation is freely of
fered; accept it in the same spirit.
Women suffering from any form of fe
male weakness are invited to freely com
municate with Mrs. Pinkham at, Lynn,
Mass. All letters are received, opened,
rend and answered by women only, thus
has been established the aterual confi
dence between Mrs. Pinkham and the
women of America which has never beei
broken and has induced more than 100,-
000 sufferers to write her for advice
during the last four months. Out of the
volume of experience which she has to
draw from, it is more than possible that
she has gained the very knowledge that
will help your case. She asks nothing
in return except your good-will, and her
advice has relieved thousands. Surely
any woman, rich or poor, is very foolish
if she does not take advantage of this
generous offer of assistance. —Lydia E.

THE EXPEDITION IS SAFE.
Captain Cavendittlt and H|« Companion!
Not Murdered, a* Reported.
London, Oct 11.—There seems no
reason to doubt that the Cavendish
sporting expedition, which left Ber
bers, East Africa, last year is safe in
every respect, A report reached Rome
from Beuadir on Oct 2 to the effect
that the expedition, which arrived at
Lugb, Solalilaud, about tne middle of
November last, and thence pr< ceeded
towards Lake Rudolph, had been at
tacked by a band of Ainharas. wno. it
was added, had murdered ail the mem
bers of the expedition, including two
Englishmen, Captain Cavendish, who
is a nephew of the Duke of Devonshire,
Lieutenant Andrew, his companion,
auo 90 Ascaris.
Alerter from Kikuyu, British East Af
rica. received here on Oct. 4 uisproved
this report. This letter, which was writ
ten by Frank Hall, the British agent at
Kikuyu, announced that Oaveud sh and
his party airived at Kikuyu < n Au .
5. after a trip around Lake Randolph,
which up to that time had not been ex
plored.
Mr. Hall further stated that the Oav
eudish expedition had started for Zm
sibar Aug. 15, the route to be taken be
ing perfectly safe. The expedition had
a little trouble with the native head
men, who incited the Ascaris to mu
tiny, and, for a time, the two Euglisn
men were forced to yield to the de
mands of the Ascaris.
