FEUD FOLLOWS A KILLING.
Three Ooldklomlad Marders Ore* O«l of
Ktlaridce-'olem in Tragedy. ,
Selma, Ala,, Oct. 15.—Lawlessness
runs rampant near Richmond, in the
southern end of this conuty. Several
months since, West Epiridge rode up
behind. Allie Ooleman, a wealthy far
mer, and blew the top of his head off
With a doublebarreled shotgun. He has
managed to elude arrest.
Later Barrett Duckworth, Coleman’s
body servant, was assassinated in his
house, and public opinion laid the crime
at Ethridge’s hands
A mouth ago Shelley Sumner, a
nephew of Ethridge, was killed by
Cnaries Nelson, a relative of Duckworth.
Wednesday night Frank Banks, a
cousin of Nelson, was shot down from
the darkness while standing in the door
of his home.
All of the murders are thought to
have grown out of the Ethridge-Cole
man killing. Not an arrest has so far
been made, although officers have made
reneated raids. It is stated that a prom
inent citizen of the neighborhood, who
has condemned the lawlessness. has hud
his life threatened. The neighborhood
is in a state of,terror.
A BIG BLAZ£ AT DURHAM.
Seven TttbitcO'i WarelimufM nnd Kijjht Cut
tngen by Fire.
Durham, N. C.. Oct. 15.—Seven to
bacco warehouses and eight cottages
were burned here, entailing a loss of
about $400,000, with $’400,000 insurance.
It was the most destructive fire this
city has known since the big blaze- of
1885.
The fire originated in the top story of
one of the double prize houses on Mor
gan street, occupied by H. J. Bass.
When the firemen reached the scene
the top was a seething mass of
flames. The fire soon spread to the
prize house adjoining, which was sepa
rated from the above by an archway.
This house was also occupied by H. J
Bass.
Three of Raleigh’s fire companies
went up to Durham on a special train
consisting of an engine, two flat cars
and a coach. About 50 men went on
the special and tlwy had all necessary
apparatus for fighting fire. Their ser
vices vyere not needed, however, as the
flames were pretty well under cofitro;
when they arrived.

Aii Arine < Government Attacked e
Near KrUnflwlck.
Atlanta, Oct. 15.—A special to The
Journal from Brunswick says: Relia
b.e parties residing at Hotel Cumber
land report that an armed government
vessel, lying inside of St. Andrew’s
sound, was seen to steam up and cross
’the bar going out to sea under full sp- e i.
Suddenly there came a report of cap
uonadiug.
The oescription of the government
boat- indicates that it was the Wilming
ton, or some other vessel of her class.
The presumption is that a cruiser sighted
the supposed filibuster and ordered het
to slow up, and upon refusal fired upon
her.

MASONS EXCOMMUNICATED.
SeUeatluu Is Sprung by an Archbishop Ini
a Jl«x C ui State.
Nogales. A. T., Oct. 15.—A sensa
tion has been sprung in the adjacent
state of Honora, Mex., by an ecclesias
tical edict from Archbishop Lopez, the
seat of whose archepiscopate is at the
city of Hermosillo, the capital of the
state, excommunicating all members oi
the Masonic fraternity.
Nearly all of the high officials in the
state and many of the most prominent
citizens are members of the Masonic or
der, and at the same rime many of them
are Catholics. The wives and female
members of their families are also.
Consequently this sweeping edict has
spread consternation all over the state.
What action will be taken by the
gentlemen effected is not yet deter
mined. One of the most prominent
Masons expressed himself as determined
to adhere to Masonry at all hazards.
