no other artist has bad the success that
has followed this great Contralto
throughout her career.
Scalchi has for some years divided her
time between London and New. York.

grand opera in New York this season
we will be enabled to hear not alone
the greatest contralto of the world but
also Mlle. Marie Taulinguet who, at the
head of the Mapleson forces last year
created a sensation by her magnificent
singing and the wonderfully powerful
voice of which she is possesed. x
MUq. Marie Du Bedat, mezzo soprano;
Mr. Thos, McQeen tenor; Sig, Alberti,

will give one act of Grand Opera with
full scenery, costumes, paraphernalia,

will be the guests of Capt. Simpson.
Rev. M. J. Cofer, presiding elder of
the Carrollton district, arrived last
night. He came especially to hear Rev.

WILL GO OUT TODAY.
Old Crews to Go on Run Between Here
and Birmingham Junction.
The old passenger crews between Rome
and Selma, who have been laid off nearly
two weeks, will go out today.
Capt. Seward and Flagman Lanham
will go out this morning, but the train
will only go to Birmingham Junetion.
They will not go' into Selma until the
quarantine is raised.
It had been the intention of many of
the refugees yet remaining in the city to
leave for Selma yesterday morning, but
the story of the burial of a child in
Selma who had died at Greensboro of
yellow fever, caused most of them to
change their intentions and remain.
The disease has been declared epidemic
in Greensboro.
The funeral party of some twenty
people, who attended the burial of the
child, have been ordered to leave. A
telegram received here yesterday stated
that the people would come to Rome
this afternoon.
It is probable that several will go to
Selma this morning.

PEOPLE COMING FROM MANY PLACES
He Will Doubtless Stand Before a House
Crowded to Its Utmost Capacity.
Leeture Will Be Brilliant.
If the question should be asked, who
is the witiest man before the public?
the answer would be. Sam Jones.
He finds unexpected relations in com
mon things, and makes you laugh
where you least expect it Whatever
may be the impressions of people,
.there is one thing that never fails,
everybody laughs that bears him,
His wisdom ,in philosophysing on
life is unsurpassed.
The wise thoughts of the greatest
men are not more weighty than some
of the nuggets that Sam drops in pas
sing.
In concise statement and never to
be forgotten phrasology he has not an
equal among men. Just let Sam
Jones put your thought into words
and it will always be convenient to
take along.
Has the world ever known his equal
in moving men to action? Never. He
has revolutionized whole cities, and
has sent hundreds of people in a sin
gle day to hunt new homes, because
they had ceased to be a demand for
their corrupt business. It is sometimes
said that Sam’s work does not stick.
But there are many hundreds all
over the country in'all of the walks
and stations of life that owe their
success to Sam Jones.
Now, is what 1 have written true or
false? If true, it is a real pity for any
one in Rome not to hear him. In
what respect have I exaggerated?
Get you tickets and have your seats
