statement of John T. Stephenson aj
captain of police. Captain Stephenson
was dismissed from the force in 1894
upon his conviction of accepting a bas
ket of peaches as a bribe for noneuiorce
ment of the ordmanije against the ob
struction of sidewalks by merchants in
the street. Tne conviction was re
cently reviewed and reversed by a
, higher court. The captain's I'ninstate
ment will carry with it the payment of
