THEY CONTRIBUTE TO CONSTITUTION-
Mrs. Harris Is Against and Mrs. Johnson
For Co-Education-Arguments Re
produced in Full.
Miss Isma Dooley/the accomplished
society editor of the Constitution pre
sents in last Sunday’s issue opinions
upon co-education from a number of
members of the Woman’s Press Club.
Two talentented ladies of Rome are
among the contributors—Mrs. Ethel
Hillyer Harris and Mrs. J. Lindsay
Johnson. Mrs. Harris is against and
Mrs. Johnson for co-education.
Their arguments are printed be
low:
Mrs. Harris’ Opinion.
Mrs. Ethel Hillyer Harris, of Rome,
Ga., a prominent member of the
Woman’s Press Club, writes as fol
lows:
‘‘l have given the subject deep and
conscientious consideration for some
months.reading all the arguments for
and against by the brightest of women
and those whom I very dearly love
and admire. I have also gained the
opinions of men, young and old, and
for awhile, I must confess, both sides
of the question seemed to be perfectly
correct, as the arguments advanced
were so fine.
“Now, however, my mind is ir
revocably made up and 1 feel that in
declaring myself against co-education.
lam throwing down the gauntlet to
almost every organization to which I
belong, for the women surely seem to
have their hearts set upon it. Mrs.
Myrick, as president of our Woman’s
Press Club, is an attractive one in
this warfare, and I may say, a brave
one, for it takes courage to oppose a
sister woman.
“The prime reason of my opposition
is that the majority of the men are
against it. lam still old fashioned
enough to believe that men, as a rule,
have more sense than women, and
that they have good cause or they
would not so violently fight what wo
man believes would be for her uplift
ing. Another reason is that our
fathers do not wish us educated with
boys. The boys wish it lesrthan the
parents, and the legislature is treat
ing it as a huge joke. Now, I do hope
that the southern women will never
so far forget her instincts ot delicacy
as to wish to go to a place where she
is not wanted.
“If Georgia does not have co educa
tion it will be because she is, as she
always has been, unique in all that
pertains to the modesty, refinement
and queenliness of her daughters.
Not through a motive of selfishness
will the university shut its doors to
the girls, but because the men of our
state have ever held its women just a
little higher and with just a little
more adoration than they do those of
any other clime.
“Can you not believe that there is
just a little more velvet on the rose of
Georgia’s womanhood than there is on
any other flower?
“What if, through that cavalier spirit
of chivalry, man wishes to keep it there?
Womanliness is woman’s best dower;
she cannot afford to forfeit one atom of
the respect she holds from the other sex;

a helpless, motherless babe to the care of
strangers who have no blood interest in its
welfare. Kind as a Sister of Charity or a
nurse may be, they cannot replace the lov
ing ministrations of a mother. This ever
recurring tragedy could be avoided if wo
men would but learn the vital importance of
caring for the health and vigor of the deli
cate organs that bear the burdens of matern
ity. The woman who neglects weakness and
disease of these organs is unfitted for moth
erhood and it only holds out to her the cer
tainty of agonizing pain and possible death.
A sure, safe, ana speedy cure for all weak
ness and disease of the organs distinctly
feminine is found in Dr. Pierce’s Favorite
Prescription. It prepares for motherhood
by making these organs strong, healthy and
elastic. If taken during the period preced
ing motherhood it banishes the usual dis
comforts. It insures a healthy baby and
makes its advent easy, almost painleag. It
provides ample nourishment for the new
comer, and shortens the mother’s period of
illness and debility. It is the best of all
known medicines for women and over 90,000
of them have said so over their signatures.
If you want to know more of it write to its
discoverer, Dr. R. V. Pierce, chief consult
ing physician to the Invalids’ Hotel and
Surgical Institute, at Buffalo, N. Y.
A good, practical home medical work is the
best friend and adviser a young wife can
have. Dr. Pierce’s Common Sense Medical
Adviser is such a book. It contains 1008
pages and 300 illustrations. Several chap
ters are devoted to the reproductive phys
iology of women and facts that every wife
and mother should know. Over a million
women possess copies of it. A new edition
is ready and will be given away absolutely
free. If you want a paper-covered copy

Medical Association. Buffalo, N. Y. Send

she cannot afford for that sex even to
imagine that she has.
“Higher education is all right, and I
feel sure that the day is not far distant
when provision will be made, and abun
dant provision, for the girls outside of
the co education trouble. Mrs. Myrick
has been accused of taking a one-sided
view of the question, as the mother of a
son. I do not believe her to be a woman
*of that caliber, but if that is the way the
other side wishes to reason, why I am
the mother of a very joung daughter,
and I am sure I would care very little
to have her take advantage of the privi
leges of co ■ education. ’ ’
Mrs. Johnson’s Opinion.
Mrs. J. Lindsay Johnson, associate
editor of the Rome Georgian and a
member of the Woman’s Press Club,
writes: “Co-education having been
proven, after twenty years experience
a perfect success in 250 institutions in
the United States and in twelve of the
finest universities of the south will
prove itself, if allowed the apportuni
ty, a great boon to the citizens of
Georgia.
“Testimony from the finest educa
tors of the country show it has been
equally as beneficial tottie young men
as the young women students.
“It is an insult to our sons to even
hint that they would not be as chival
rous as the young men of other states
have shown themselves to be north,
south, and west. lam most emphat
ically for co-education.”

MR. ELLERBE’S MESSAGE.
Governor Will Devote Most of the Docu
ment to Whisky Question.
Columbia, S. 0., Dec. 13.—Governdi
Ellerbe announces that he will devote
the greater part of his message to the
legislature to the liquor question. Since
it has been known that there is nc
chance of the United Sta’es supreme
court rendering a decision on the ques
tion of the right of citizens of other
states to sell liquor in original packages
through agencies here in time for such
decision to be a guide to the general as
sembly, the hearing being fixed fol
March, the governor has received many
suggestions as to the proper course for
the state to pursue.
The latest of these is the preamble
and resolutions of Mount Olio Grange
No. 14, suggesting a plan to freeze out
the original package houses by high li
cense. which will be imposed on county
dispensaries and then refunded to the
counties by the state. The resolutions
follow:
Resolved, That we do hereby declare in
favor of the dispensary law and hope that
it will be allowed to remain on the stat
ute books ot the state. And as a means
to attain the desired end we respectfully
suggest the following changes:
1. That a license tax of of $5,000 be
placed on all liquor establishments, local
dispensaries included.
2. That the price of liquors sold through
the local dispensaries be reduced.
3. That the general assembly appropri
ate annually to each of th- several coun
ties a sum of money equalling the amount
collected annually from the dispensaries
1 situated and doing business in each of
said several counties.
While the governor is considering
these many suggestions, the Prohibi
tionists are organizing in every corner
of the state.

They Flirt So With Tennessee School
Girls That There is a “Johnny Law”
The salons of Tennessee have passed
a law prohibiting “Johnnies” from
flirting with school girls or loitering
about institutions where females are
educated.
Georgia needs no such law. Take
Shorter College for instance. Dr. Battle
ia such a splendid disciplinarian that he
never has the least trouble of that kind.
Sam Burdette writes as follows in the
Chicago Chronicle about Tennessee’s
prize “Johnny’’ law: A member of
Congress from Tennessee reports that
the women in that state, especially the
unmarried ones, are very much excited
over a law which was passed at the last
session of the Legislature. It was enti
tled, an act to prevent flirting between
the sexes, and was designed for the pro
tection of susceptible young girls against
the advances of obnoxious young men.
The legislation was asked for by several
prominent educators, who appeared be
fore the General Assembly and insisted
that something should be done to pre
vent young men from flirting with the
students of female colleges.
When the measure was first offered
it was called the “Johnny bill,” and
it is still popularly known by that
designation. The bill, which was
passed by a large vote, imposes a
severe penalty upon anyone who flirts
with school girls or loiters about build
ings devoted to their education. The
first arrest under the law has been
made at Knoxville, where Lin Cham
berlin is charged with flirting with the
15-year old daughter of a leading
citizen.
Mr. Chamberlin’s arrest under the
“Johnny law” has attracted public
attention to that statute and it is being
generally condemned by the women all
through the State. There is Dome talk
of asking for a special session of the leg
islature in order that the obnoxious law
may be repealed. Mr. Chamberlin will
be tried in January, and naturally a
great deal of interest is being taken in
his case. His lawyers will attack tne
law on the ground that it is unconstitu
tional.
