BiAUTIFUL CATHEDRAL IN FRANCISCO
It Cost Over S 100,000 and is a Magnifi
cent Edifice—lmportant Church in
Connecticut.
S\n Francisco, Dec, 13.—A little
over 100 years ago nine Russian monks
under the leadership of Joseph Bolotoif,
abbot, arrived on Kaidyan, one of the
Aleutian group of islands. There they
erected the first Orthodox Russian
church and school in the western hem
isphere. These buildings, which were
dedicated to St. Paul, are still in exist
ence and harbor :i thriving colony of
Russians and half breeds. The discov
ery. settlement and Christianization of
these islands were not.due to any gov
ernment enterprise, but to the labors of
two Russian subjects—Skelikof? and
Baranoff.
In 1783 these men, at their own risk
and expense, fitted out three vessels on
the Kamchatka coast and undertook the
conquest and subjugation of the Aleu
tian and Kurile group of islands. In
time the colony became important
enough to command synodic attention,
and bishops began to be appointed.
Soon, through , the efforts of Bishop
Nestor, a cathedral was founded at San
Francisco, and progression was steady
until in these days there are numerous
churches and reverend officials sprin
kled throughout the states.
The Russian church of today flour
ishes mainly through the enthusiastic
labors and enterprise of Bishop Nieholai,
whose diocese is. latitudinally and lon
gitudinally, the most extensive in the
world, extending, as it does, from New
York to the islands already mentioned,
a stretch of land and sea exceeding
7,000 miles! This vigorous and highly
intellectual cleric succeeded Vladimir
in 1892, when he was placed in full
control of the Russian Orthodox church
in America. His work during the five
years he has occupied the see has been

so full and earnest as to approach the
heroic. He established 15 churches in
four years and travels harder and more
continuously than any living creature
except perhaps a railway conductor, He
is practical, large hearted and brilliant,
richly deserving the absolute devotion
of all the church members, and, as will
be seen, while his features are charac
teristically Slav, his appearance is emi
nently pleasing.
Os the sacred edifices by far the most
important is the cathedral at San Fran
cisco. The starting funds were $35,000,
raised by Bishop Nestor. During the
era of Bishop Vladimir about $65,000
was expended, and the building is now
complete and thoroughly equipped. An
important church is at Bridgeport,
Conn. It is a small, wooden edifice,
about 40 feet wide and 70 deep and of
reasonable height. There is a steeple or
church tower in front surmounted by a
triple cross. This cross is the only char
acteristic external feature of the church.
The interior is very plain. The walls
and ceiling are perfectly white. The win
dows are of stained glass, soft yellow
predominating, so that the light is
bright. There is a small gallery over
the front entrance. The characteristic
features of the Orthodox Greek church
are shown in the cut —the screen that
separates the altar from the main part

The Russian church goes far back .in
its customs. The cross has three pieces,
typifying that on which Jesus died.
The cross of the crucifixion had a foot
rest on which the feet of the Saviour
were nailed, a second and longer strip
for the arms, while over the head was
the sign piece on which had been paint
ed “Jesus the Nazarene.” If a church
is surmounted by a cross, should it not
be one which entirely symbolizes the
crucifixion? Take again the matter of
church worship. The congregations
stand during the service, a time honor
ed custom handed down from the days
of Jesus himself, when the disciples
stood and the congregations gathered
about them to hear their teachings.
Sunday begins at 5 o’clock on Saturday
night, because the Bible says that God
the evening first.
A few years ago there was scarcely
an American Russian church except the
cathedral in San Francisco, built as a
sort of American headquarters, for the
bulk of communicants lived in Alaska
and the Aleutian islands and consisted
principally of Indians and native Eski
mos. Now there are 14,000 members
tnd upward of 60 places of worship.

TO ABOLISH SICK LEAVE.
Representative I>«»clcerv S»jm the Privilege
Has Been Abused.,
Washington, Dec. 14.—Representa
tive Dockery of Missouri, chairman o’
the subcommittee having in charge the
legitlative, executive and judicial ap
propriation bill, has secured tne adop
tion of au amendment abolishing the
granting of sick leave to employes in
the government departments.
The practice lias heretofore prevailed
of allowing each clerk 30 days’ sick
leave in each year in addition to his 30
days’ regular vacation, but it has been
found that the privilege has been in
variably abused, all of the employes
taking their full 30 days of “sickness.’’
Mr. Dockery warns clerks who may
appear at the capitoi or elsewhere to
work for the defeat of his ameiinmenc
that they will be held to a strict ac
counting for violation of the civil ser
vice regulations.

If the people generally knew the true
cause of Rheumatism, there would be
no such th-ng as liniments and lotions
for this painful and disabling disease.
The'fact is, Rheumatism is a disordered
State of the blood—it can be reached,
therefore, only through the blood. But
all blood remedies cannot cureßheuma
tiem, for it is an obstinate disease, one
which requires a real blood remedy—
something more than a mere tonic.
Swift’s Specific is the only real blood
remedy and promptly goes to the very
bottoui of even the most obstinate case.
Like all other blood diseases, the
doctors are totally unable to cure Rheu
inatism. In fact, the only remedies
which they prescribe are potash and
mercury, and though temporary relief
may result, these remedies produce a
Stiffness of joints and only intensify the
disease. Those who have hr 1 experience
with Rheumatism knew that it becomes
more severe each year.
JIB
The case of Mrs. James Kell, of 6ii
Ninth Street, S. E., Washington, D. C.,
should convince everyone that it is
useless to expect doctors to cure Rheu
matism. Under recent date she writes :
“A few months ago I had an attack of
Sciatic Rheumatism in its worst form.
The pain was so intense that my ner
vous system was prostrated, and I was
for a long time perfectly helpless. The
attack was an unusually severe one,
and my condition was regarded as
being very dangerous.
“I was attended by one of the most
able doctors of Washington City, who is
also a member of the faculty of the
leading college here. He told me to
continue his prescription and I would
get well. After having it refilled twelve
times and receiving not the least bene
fit, I declined to take it longer.
“Having heard S.S.S. (Swift’s Spe
cific) recommended for Rheumatism,
I decided, almost in despair, to give
it a trial. Alter taking a few bot
tles I was able to hobble around on
crutches, and very soon had no need
at all for them, for S.S.S. cured me
sound and well. All the distressing
pains have left me, my appetite has
returned, and I am happy to be again
restored to perfect health.”
S.S.S. never disppoints, for it is made
to cure these deep-rooted diseases which
are beyond the reach of all other reme
dies. It cures permanenty Rheumatism,
Catarrh, Cancer, Scrofula, Eczema, and
all other blood diseases. It is the only
blood remedy guaranteed
