On Christmas Night Mrs. J. B. E,
Brown Passed Away.
WAS A MODEL CHRISTIAN MOTHER
Sorroiwng Relatives In Rome—Funeral
Occurred In Carrolton—Two Little
Giris Left Motherless.
On Christmas night at 8 o’clock at
Carrollton, Ga., the bright soul of
Mrs J. B. Brown winged its way to
the eternal home beyond the stars
where there is no sorrow or weeping.
Surrounded by her husband, her
mother and her sisters she passed
from earth to heaven with that beau
tiful faith of Christian womanhood
which robs death of much of its ter
ror, and insures for the believer eter
nal joy with the great white-robed
throng.
The sickness of Mrs. Brown only took
a dangerous turn on Friday, and on
Christmas morning her mother, Mrs.
Alex. T. Harper and sisters, Mrs.
Mark G. McDonald. Misses Ella and
Grace Harper were summoned to her
bedside. Even then hope of saving her
life was not given up. Dr. J. B. 8.
Holmes was telegraphed to after their
-rrival in Carrollton, and he responded
arriviag four hours before her death,
but he said there was no hope.
The funeral took place at 10:30 yester
day morning from the First Baptist
church in Carrollton. The church was
crowded to overflowing. So great was
the sorrow and sympathy of the Carroll
ton people that a majority of the stores
were closed during the funeral services.
Dr. Wingo conducted the services, and
preached a most touching and comfort
ing sermon.
Those from Rome who were at tbe
funeral were Mrs. Alex T. Harper,
Mr. Thornton Harper, Mr. and Mrs.
M. G. McDonald, Misses Ella, Fannie
and Grace Harper and Mr. Blount
Hamilton. All returned yesterday
except Mrs. Harper who will remain
sometime with the family and be
reaved young husband.
Mrs. Mattie Harper Brown was the
second daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Alex T. Harper, of Cave Spring and a
niece of Col. C. M. Harper and Mrs.
D. B. Hamilton, Sr. She was only
twenty-nine years of age, and was a
lovely Christian woman of tbe most
exalted type. She was married to
Mr. J B. E. Brown, cashier of the
Carrollton bank at Cave Spring April
15, 1890. Two sweet little girls bless
ed their union. Her devoted hus
band is heartbroken over her sudden
and unexpected demise] while her
many relatives in Rome lament in
much sorrow her sad death.
A Tribute to the Memory of Mn. Mattle
Harper.
On last Sunday morning when the
news reached me that the spirit of this
dear woman had taken its flight, my
heart, for a moment, stood still.
Then what were the thoughts which
followed? After the shock bad pasted
away and I quietly, calmly realized that
’twas a truth, a solemn truth, an awful
truth that she had “gone to join the an
gels.” Then, on wings of magio swift
ness my memory fie a back, far baok
into the beautiful days of the past. The
days when I knew her as a happy
hearted, merry girl—the light of her
parents’ home in Cave Spring. Nor was
the radius of this light limited by the
walls of her home, nor the love and ad
miration of this beantiful character con
fined to the hearts of the home circle.
In her ever smiling face, in her ever
sparkling eyes, brightly beamed the
the virtues she possessed, and]everybody
Ijved her.
The high and lowly alike she regarded
with kindest consideration and greeted
with words of cheer.
In maturer years I was associated
with her as an active, zealons Christian)
ambitions, to do something.for the cause,
untiring in her efforts'to accomplish
good. And today in looking back over
the pathway she has trod, many are the
little monuments which lift their heads
to testify * ‘she passed this way.” Some
telling of kind worda spoken, some of
good deeds done.
Then in the course of time she left
her parental roof to become the center,
the light, the life of another home. All
this she was and more, nntil Christmas

As the light of the Christmas morn
dawned upon our ""infant king,’* so did
the dawning of this return of the day
greet her on the other shore, light her
to the pearly gates and into the very
joys of His presence.
A friend, a daughter, a wife, a
mother! As a friend I feel keenly my
own loss. ’Tis sad, sad to me when I
realize that I’ll never walk with her
again on earth and listen to her voice
always full of hope and love; I shed
tears of sorest grief with the gray
haired father and mother in the loss
of their dear child; I mourn with the
husband who is left without his be
loved companion, his comforter; but
my heart aches coldly when I think of
the precious little ones without a
mother.
May her God, who has called her
from them, shield and protect her
darlings, care for and love them, and
finally take them to His own bosom,
where they, with the mother “gone
before,” can praise Him forevermore.
Without a mother! How great is
the. meaning of those words! I know
I have felt their meaning in all full
ness. As a vague dream oi childhood
is to me the sweet face of my mother,
and today I feel that my life has been
only a half life, because it ias bon
without a mother’s guidance.
Like all childish hearts, bow eagerly
did the little ones of this home, now
desolate, long for the Christmas tide,
never dreaming that the day, in
stead of bringing them bright gifts,
would rob them of their dearest treas
ure on earth instead of being freight
ed with joy and gladness, would
bring to their little hearts the deep
est grief they can ever know, and
cover them with a cloud whose dark
ness no sun can penetrate. The mem
ory of their mother will live with
them, but
‘‘Sorrow’s crown of sorrow
Is remembering happier thing’s.”
There is no light like a mother’s
face; no touch like that of a mother’s
band; no love like that of a mother’s
heart. Then bow grateful we moth
ers should be, we who are yet spared
to our children, and as we are ushered
into the New Year, let’s be more
fixed in our determination to right
fully improve the opportunity of in
stilling pure thoughts in their young
minds; high principles in their tender
hearts; turning their faces Heaven
ward, let’s plant their little feet in
the path of truth and duty; take
their little hands in ours, and with
them march triumphant to Glory and
to God. A Friend.

Beneath a sprig of mistletoe

Christmas festivities and the giving
and receiving of gifts have been the
principal topics uppermost in the
mind of society folks for the past ten
days. Christmas trees and the joyous
family reunions have formed the
most popular modes of entertaing.
Affairs of a very formal nature are
seldom given during the holiday sea
son. In Rome the season passed
quietly and pleasantly.
Now that the great day has become
numbered among events of tbe past,
society will gradually drift into its
normal state.
The Cora’ene Cotillion club’s dance
at the Armstrong hotel tonight will
be a brilliant affair. The favors will
be artistic and elegant, and will be
placed on a large Christmas tree in one
corner of tbe large dining room. The
orchestra will be re inforced with
three pieces from Wurm’s orchestra
including a snare drum. Messrs. Hor
ace King and Sproull Fouche will lead
the figures, and several novel ones
will be introduced. It is expected
that about thirty-five couples will
participate.
The Q. T. club will be entertained
by Mrs. A. B. 8. Moseley thia
afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Tbe mem
bers are requested to be prompt and
to notify the hostess of intended ab
sences.
The Bachelors’ hop Wednesday even
ing at the residence of Mrs. J. Lindsay
Johnson, East Rome, will be next to the
Conasene German in important events
for the week. Elegant favors” will be
given each coaple, and as this lovely
home is so well adapted for entertaining
every one is assured of a pleasant even
ing. Each Bachelor will have the
privilege of inviting one outsider.
The Christmas entertainment of
tbe children of tbe First Baptist
church will be given tonight.
The Fortnightly club will meet with
Mrs. Dr. Lindsay Johnson on Thurs
day morning at 10 o’clock. A full at
tendence is desired and those mem:
bers who cannot attend are requested
to notify the hostess in advance.

COURT HORSE MARRIAGE.
’Squire John Horton Performed His
First Ceremony Yesterday.
There was a marriage at the court
house yesterday morning, and ’Squire J.
O. Horton performed the ceremony.
The couple were from Cherokee coun
ty, Alabama, and though they did not
say as much, it is a plausible supposition
that they were induced to journey afar
to have the Gordon, knot tied by some
nemesis iu the shape of an angry pater
or (rater.
’Squire John Horton happened to be
on hand. He has not been aJ. P. very
long, and had never performed a mar
riage ceremony. After considerable per
suasion had been used on him by Judge
Davis and others, ’Squire consented to
pronounce the words that should make
them husband and wife.
He was visibly affected when he stood
before the blushing bride and groom,
and told them in a voice husky with
emotion to “join right hands.”
Then he said:
“M. R. Harrell,do you take this woman,
etc.” And when the groom had signi
fied his complete willingness, the ’squire
continued:
“Miss Beulah Dudley, do you take this
man, etc.,” through the whole formula,
nnril he concluded with, “I pronounce
you husband and wife.”
Then the ’squire shook hands with the
newly married couple, pocketed the
dollar, the groom slipped into his hand,
and walked over to the water bucket and
drank as though hi hadn’t had a drink
(of water) in a week.
The ’squire did admirably for the first
effort, but there’s no gainsaying that he
was scared.
