expedition, is easily the foremost Brit
ish journalist, and it is doubtful even
if any of our hustling American editors
can hold a candle to him. That any
thing lively or enterprising should come
out of London journalism seems incred
ible, but it is true Mr. Harmsworth is
the publisher of the London Daily Mail
and 16 other journals and prides him
self that he prints more papers than
any other man living.
When Harmsworth was barely out of
Oxford, he decided to become a Napole
on of journalism. He straightway start
ed, with no capital to speak of, Answers,
a weekly paper that immediately caught
the British heart. Before he was 23
years old he was printing over a million
papers a week. He started more papers,
capitalized his business, sold £500,000
worth of stock and retained a control
ling interest himself. Then he bought
daily papers in London, Glasgow, Ports
mouth and other places, and finally in
May, 1896, he acquired the London
Daily Mail.
The Mail burst on London like a me
teor. It was full of bright ideas and
wakened people up in a manner that
startled but pleased them. As a result
the paper distanced all its competitors,
and the total output of Mr. Harms
worth’s various publications is said to
be something over 7,000,000 copies a
week.
Mr. Harmsworth’s gift to Peary is
only a fresh evidence of his interest in
the field of exploration. Three years
ago he sent Frederick Jackson in search
of the north pole on what was called
the Jackson-Harmsworth expedition,
and the world has not yet finished read
ing the adventures of Mr. Henry Savage
Lander, whom he sent to Tibet in an
attempt to reach the sacred city of Lhas

without Dr, King’s New Discovery for
Consumption, Coughs and Colds. Ex

got the true remedy until we used Dr

can take its place in our home, as in it
we have a certain and sure cure for

Musical names from the language ol
original inhabitants and owners of out
country will hereafter be given to
steamers of the United States revenue
service. This is well. There is an inex
haustible supply of these pleasant sound
ing Indian words to draw on in giving
names to ships, towns, buildings, sleep
ing cars, etc., in the United States. I!
is evidence of intellectual vacuity to
borrow English names and apply these
over and again in our country when
we have plenty of musical words at
home. There are scores of Richmond
and London and Winchester postofflee!
in the Union, involving infinite confu
sion and profanity in the mail service
and unnumbered losses of both money
and love letters outside. All this would
be avoided if those who have the nam
ing of things would look into the his
tory of their own neighborhood and per
petuate it by using Indian words com
mon in the locality in the red man’s
time.
These instances of pastors of churches
beating and choking their own wivei
and making love to other men’s wives,
likewise of engaging in fist fights with
their deacons and elders, arc becoming
quite too common for the good name
and fame of the Christian religion.
They give rich material to scoffers and
convey to outsiders the impression that
there is nothing in a religion which
cannot restrain its professed exponents
frem such high antics. It is true that
the antics are the fault of the exponents
and not of the religion, but an unbeliev
ing world is not in the habit of making,
nice discriminations.

AN ACCIDENT IN ASHEVILLE.

Several Per-uee Very Seriously Injured
While Firing * Salute.
Asheville, N. 0., Dec. 27.-kA crowd
of 100 or more men and boys were firing
i a salute from an old cannon on the out
skirts of the town, when a can of 30
pounds of powder exploded in the thick
of the crowd, Thirty or 40 persons
were injured, but none, it is believed,
fatally.
The cannon was fired several times,
and then Joseph Finch, an employe u?
the Souther'i Railway company, picked
up the now er can and began to reload
the piece. The gun had not been
swabbed out, and the moment .the tiny
stream of powder struck the heated
metal there was a flash and a report
that made the earth tremble. Am »•
meut later in the smoke that rose from
the explosion human beings ran blind y
here and there over the hill, falling and
rising, only to fall again, as they fra i
tioally rushed about, blinded and po z
der burned, madly trying to extlugush
theirjflaming clothes.
Those wh were unhurt ran to the aid
of the uni irtuuate ones, smothering
flaming clothing or cutting the gar
ments from their bodies. One man was
blown or rolled completely down me
hill, 200 feet.
Joseph Fuch is among the most seri
ously hurt, his nose and mouth being
torn out of all shape, and he is probably
blinded.
Clarence Ledford, who stood near the
cannon when the powder ignited, was
thrown mon than 50 feet. His cloth
ing was torr or burned entirely off and
a part of t ie skin on the forehead
burned loose
Charles Earwood and John Ingle plso
are serionsl; hurt, and several others
probably wii lose their sight or be dis
figured for life.
