Preproduction filming began last week
in Lyons for a movie titled “Blue Lightning.”
Produced by Luther Wardlaw of Toombs
County and directed by Aaron Williams, the
film tells the poignant story of an adventur
ous, orphaned girl (played by 10-year-old
Ava Matello) who goes to live on a farm with
her grandfather, (portrayed by Gordon Dan-
niels). As they struggle to learn about each
other and become family, the two bond over
the town sport of soapbox racing.
As everyone knows, Lyons is famous
for its annual Southeast Georgia Soapbox
Derby, and it provided the perfect location
for filming the movie named for the “Blue
Lightning” soapbox racer. Last Tuesday,
filming took place on Derby Hill in Partin
Park, at Andy’s Home Center and on a fami
ly-owned farm in Lyons.
In addition to Matello, who has already
appeared in 12 movies, and Danniels, who is

The weather cooperated and
the crowds turned out for Vi-

Celebration July 3 at City Park
downtown.
The event featured a spec
tacular fireworks display, music,
concessions, and a new event—a
kid’s karaoke contest. Volunteer
Sha’Keema Wooden coordinated
this event and the winners were
Karson Tanner, first place; Claire
Beasley, second place; and Cai-
synn Perry, third place.
After the karaoke contest,
the Block Party Experience band
took the stage. Billed as a young
and diverse Atlanta-based, high-

the band performed music that
appealed to all ages.

Early voting in the runoff
election for the District 156
House seat, which began June
28, continues through July 9. So
far, advance voting has been ex
tremely light.
In Montgomery County,
only 157 early votes have been
cast and six absentee ballots
mailed out, said Registrar Bob
bie Carpenter Tuesday morning.
“There is not a lot of interest,”
Carpenter said. The county has
over 5,000 registered voters.
In Toombs County, only
36 absentee ballots had been
mailed out and 404 advance
votes cast as of July 2, according
to the Toombs County Board of
Elections website. July 2 was the
last date for which voting results
were available ahead of The Ad
vance deadline for this week’s
edition. The county has over
17,484 registered voters, 16,558
of which are currently active in
the Toombs County Board of
Elections system.
A change in the election
law effective July 1 eliminated
Saturday voting which was origi
nally scheduled for July 3, and no
voting took place, on Monday,
July 5, because of the July Fourth
holiday. After the holiday obser-
