“Playing for Gruden
was an interesting chal
lenge,” Brad says, “He
made us believe. We
stayed healthy and won
the close games, which
is always important. We
were hungry. We could
score points and our de
fense stopped everybody.”
He can still recite the
playbook verbiage: “Shift
green, left west F short
spire, U banana Z over
head.” And, “green right,
close 14, blast check 97
Seattle, spider 2 banana.”
With some coordinators,
they install the plays early
morning and you don’t
see them again till 5:00
in the afternoon,” he says.
“You were with Gruden
all day long. You agreed
upon the plays, you de
bated the plays, but on
Sunday you were on the
same page.”
Johnson loved the in
teraction, he loved train
ing camp and practice. “I
was grateful to be playing
the game and practice, to
me, was fun.” That is why
the game remains fun
today as he coaches the
quarterbacks at Oconee
County High School. He
loves what he is doing.
Even when he drives
through the night 596
miles for LSU games.
There is little rest on Sat
urday during the day be
fore a night game in Ba
ton Rouge. Then it is an
all-night drive back home
in time for a quarterback
meeting on Sunday af
ternoon. His take on his
routine: “It’s fun.”
Back at Black Moun
tain in the late eighties,
given the opportunity, he
would have signed up for
his journey without hesi
tation.

lead to 4-0.
In the top of the
third inning the Indians
got on the board when
Rileigh Robinson scored
on a double by Alii
Taufmann. That closed
the lead to 4-1.
The game then be
came a pitching dual.
Neither team scored a
run over the rest of the
game. VHS did have a
runner on base in the
top of the seventh in
ning, but could not come
up with the big hits
when they needed them
as they dropped their
first game of the year.
VHS is now 5-1 on
the year, and are 0-1 in
Region 2AA. This week
the Indians took on East
Laurens on Tuesday af
ter presstime and will be
at Bacon County on
Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Both of those are Region
games. Then this Friday
and Saturday VHS will
be at Victor Lord Park in
Winder, GA. They will
take on Lambert and Ola
on Friday, and then play
Dacula and Lanier on
Saturday.

The Toombs County
High School football
team opened up their sea
son last Friday night in
Eastman as they took on
the Indians of Dodge
County. Dodge came
into the game ranked
as they #9 team in the
state in AA, and it
showed as they rolled
over the Bulldogs,
39-0.
The game made
it just a few minutes
in before it was halted
due to lightning. It
was around an hour be
fore play resumed. Late in
the first quarter, the Indi
ans had moved the ball
down inside the Toombs
30-yard line, but the de
fense stepped up and
took the ball over on
downs at their own 24-
yard line.
Toombs wasn’t able
to get anything going and
had to punt the ball away.
Dodge began to move the
ball as the first quarter
was coming to an end.
Then, less than a minute
into the second Dodge
put the first points on the
board on a long pass play.
They added a two-point
conversion to take an 8-0
lead over Toombs with
11:09 left in the first half.
Dodge added to their
lead on a diving catch in
the end zone with just
over four minutes on the
clock. They tacked on the
PAT for a 15-0 lead over
the Bulldogs.
Dodge added a safety
and then another touch
down as the first half was
coming to a close to take
a 25-0 lead into halftime.
Dodge pushed that
lead to 32-0 in the third
quarter, and picked
up a touchdown on a
74-yard run in the
fourth quarter to lead
the game 39-0.
Dodge held on to
take the win by that
score over Toombs,
39-0.
This week
Toombs will host the
Warriors of Tattnall
County on Friday night
in The Pit at 7:30 p.m.
This will be the first game
in The Pit since the in
stallation of a new light
ing system that is sure to
wow the crowd.
