Obituaries
Mr. David Burke
Mr. David A. Burke,
age 76, ofVidalia, died on
Friday, September 10,2021,
at the Community Hospice
House in Vidalia after a
brief illness.
Mr. Burke was a life
long resident of Toombs
County, living near Vidalia
most of his life, and was a
1964 graduate Lyons High
School. He worked as a
meat cutter at JC Sowell
Meats for 50 years, and cur
rently was a meat cutter at
Thriftway in Lyons. He was
preceded in death by his
wife, Brenda Vaughn Burke;
and his parents, Carl Rahn
Burke and Willie Mae Bur
gess Burke.
His family includes 1
daughter, Michelle L. Burke
and Matt Peebles; 1 grand
son, Cameron Burkett, all
ofVidalia; 2 sisters, Henri
etta “Henri” Burke Tabor
and Margaret Burke Ad
ams McLendon; 1 brother,
Frank Burke, all of Lyons;
and several nieces, neph
ews, and cousins.
The funeral service was
held on Tuesday, Septem
ber 14, 2021, at 11:00 a.m.,
in the chapel of Ronald V.
Hall Funeral Home, with
Pastor Reece Mincey offi
ciating. Burial followed in
Pinecrest Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Rod
ney Hitchcock, Matt Pee
bles, Vic Adams, Hunter
Hitchcock, Danny Taylor,
Michael Grimes, and Josh
Grimes.

Mr. Calvin Clements
Mr. Calvin “Esten” Cle
ments, age 76, of Vidalia,
died on Sunday, Septem
ber 5, 2021, at the Serenity
Hospice House in Dublin
after an extended illness.
Mr. Clements was a
native of Toombs County,
as a child moved to Florida
and lived there until he re
turned to Toombs County
in the mid 1970’s. He was
a heavy equipment opera
tor, including a crane opera
tor, working for many years
at Plant Vogtle and Plant
Hatch with International
Union Operating Engineers
Local #474 in Savannah. He
was preceded in death by 1
daughter, Dana Leah Cle
ments; 1 grandson, Bryce
McKinley Clements; his
parents, James Evey Cle
ments and Mildred Rollins
Clements; 1 brother, Ken
neth “Kennis” Clements;
and 1 sister, Grace Clem
ents Gray.
His family includes
1 son, Dane Clements of
Baxley; 1 stepdaughter, Al-
lyson Cauley Branch and
wife Melinda Branch of
Baxley; 2 grandchildren,
Drew Clements and Kim-
ber Clements; and several
nieces, nephews, and cous
ins.

Mrs. Martha Glover
Autry, age 88, of Macon,
died on Friday, September
10, 2021, at the Treutlen
County Health and Reha
bilitation Center in Soper-
ton.
Mrs. Autry was born
in Americus. She attended
Young Harris High School
and Georgia Southwestern
College in Americus. She
lived in Macon since 1966
She worked with her hus
band in his Banker’s Life in
surance agency in Macon.
She moved to Dublin in
2017. She was a longtime
member of Forest Hills
United Methodist Church
in Macon, where she was
a founding member of the
Marshall Singles Class.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, Carr Sul
livan Glover and Martha
Elizabeth Duncan Glover;
her former husband, Al
bert Herbert Autry, Sr.; 1
brother, Carr S. Glover III;
1 daughter, Clara Yvonne
Autry Merchant; and 1
cousin, Caroline Glover.
Survivors include 1
son, Albert Herbert “Al”
Autry, Jr., (Celia); 1 daugh

Mrs. Betty Downs
Altman, age 90, of Vida
lia, died on Wednesday,
September 8, 2021, at The
Oaks Bethany in Vidalia af
ter an extended illness.
Mrs. Altman was a na
tive of Lumber City, and
a 1948 graduate of Lum
ber City High School. She
was a graduate of Brew-
ton-Parker College, and
Georgia Teachers College
in Statesboro. She taught
first grade for 16 years, and
middle school for several
years. After retiring from
public school, she taught
at Amicord in Hazlehurst.
She was a former mem
ber of the Georgia Retired
Teachers Association. She
was a member of the First
Baptist Church of Lumber
City and attended First
United Methodist of Lum
ber City. She was preceded
in death by her husband,
Watson Altman; and her
parents, Lorenzo Dow
“LD” Downs and Sarah
Ethelyn Googe Altman.
Her family includes 1
special cousin, Doris Still
ofVidalia; 2 daughters, Sar
ah Jean Altman and Kristi
Battleson; 3 grandchildren,
Kyle Johnson, Kirk John
son, and Bryn Battleson;
several nieces, nephews,
and cousins, including
nieces Peggy Bowen and
Patti Tatum; cousins, Re
becca Mitchell, Jack Parish,
and Brent Parrish.

Ms. Angela Sapp
Ms. Angela Henry
Sapp, age 71, of Vidalia,
died on Wednesday, Sep
tember 8, 2021, at Doctor’s
Hospital in Augusta.
Ms. Sapp was bom in
Vidalia, grew up in Soper
ton and was a 1968 gradu
ate of Treutlen County
High School. She attended
Ogeechee Technical Col
lege, where she earned
her certification in Cos
metology. She worked in
Swainsboro as a cosme
tologist for approximately
20 years before working
with Ithaca Industries and
Oxford Manufacturing in
Swainsboro and Vidalia,
until retiring in 2020. She
lived most of her life in the
Toombs County/Vidalia
area. She was a member of
Boiling Springs Missionary
Baptist Church. She was
preceded in death by her
parents, Gerald M. Henry
and Sarah Annette Holton
Henry Phillips; her step
father, Charles ‘Charlie”
Phillips; and 2 brothers, in
fant Matthew Jason Henry
and Gerald M. Henry.
Survivors include 1
daughter, Stephanie Shiver
(Chris), Vidalia; 1 son,
Sonny Sapp (Nikki), Vida
lia; 1 brother, Jeff Henry,
Soperton; her grandchil
dren, Cealy Shiver, Chan
dler Shiver, Caden Sapp,

1, 2021, at his home.
Mr. Stevens was born
in Madisonville, TN, be

in 2006. He worked as a
pipefitter with the Local
Steamfitters and Pipefit
ters Union for a number of
years and was a master cab
inet maker, having worked
for over 20 years with John
Wamock Custom Cabinets
in Soperton. He attended
Hebron Holiness Church
in Soperton. He was pre
ceded in death by his par
ents, Hoyt Stevens, Jr., and
Rosie Aline Tyler New
berry; his wife, Dorothyja-
nene Scott Stevens; and his
mother-in-law, Sister June
Beasley Scott.
Survivors include 1
son, Terry Shane “T.J.”
Stevens, Jr., Soperton;
his siblings, Darlene Car-

Mrs. Monice G.
McLeod, age 62 of Alley,
passed away on Tuesday,
September 7, 2021, at St.
Joseph’s/Candler in Savan
nah following her battle
with COVID.
She was born on
November 15, 1958, in
Fitzgerald, GA, to the late
William Donald and Ger
aldine Musselwhite Free
man. She was an adminis
trative assistant at Affinis
Hospice and attended First
Assembly of God, Vidalia.
In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death
by her maternal and pater
nal grandparents; and her
brother, Quincey Freeman.
Mrs. McLeod is sur
vived by her loving hus
band, Randall McLeod;
daughter, Wanda Gail
Gregory; two stepsons,
Brian and Christopher
McLeod; two sisters, Von
Pitts and Perian Freeman;
one grandchild, Cami
McLeod; and several spe
cial nieces and nephews;
and numerous special
friends, and cousins.
The family received
friends on Friday, Septem
ber 10, 2021, from 6:00
p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at

Mr. Tildon Hugh Bea
sley, age 73, of Adrian, died
on Thursday, September
9, 2021, under the care of
Community Hospice in Vi
dalia.
Mr. Beasley grew up in
the Treutlen
County and
Adrian com-
m u n i t i e s .
He attend
ed Adrian
School and Middle Geor
gia College. He served in
the United States Army,
assigned to the 101st Air
borne Division, where he
served 2 tours in Vietnam.
He worked as a mail carrier
with the U.S. Postal Service
in Dublin until he retired
with 34 years of service.
He drove a school bus for
the Treutlen County Public
School System. He served
as a County Commissioner
in Treutlen County, on the
Board of Tax Accessors, was
a member of the American
Legion in Treutlen County
and was a member and
Deacon at Adrian Baptist
Church. He was preceded
in death by his parents,
Calvin Tildon Beasley and
Effie Redfern Beasley; 2
brothers, Donald Beasley
and Bobby Beasley; and 1
brother-in-law, J.E. McLen
don.
Survivors include his
wife, Debbie Reynolds
Beasley, Adrian; 4 sisters,
Jeanne McLendon, Bruns
wick, Sarah Quick (Don),
Soperton, Linnie Claxton

Mr. Billy Edward
Thompson, age 90, for
merly of Aiken, SC, died
on Tuesday, September 7,
2021, at the Serenity Place
in Dublin.
Mr. Thompson was
born in Pelzer, SC, and was
a graduate of Pelzer High
School. He served in the
United States
Navy during
the Korean
Conflict. He
worked at
the Savan
nah River Site in Aiken as
a power house operator.
After over 20 years work
ing in power generation, he
transitioned into electrical
an instrumentation main
tenance and retired with
over 42 years of service.
In 2016 he moved to Sop
erton. He was a longtime
member and Treasurer
of the Memorial Baptist
Church in Aiken. He was
preceded in death by his
parents, William Terry
Thompson and Ruby Ida
Knight Thompson; his
wife, Louise Thompson;
and 1 sister, JoAnn Stone.
Survivors include 1
daughter, Debra Bunton
(Fred), Soperton; 1 son,
Stephen Thompson (Gle-
