McDonald Takes State Title

Donald was successful in
breaking the final targets to
capture the state title of
HOA (High Overall) in AA
GISA Shotgun.
Earlier that afternoon,
after the final scores had
been submitted, it was de
termined that McDonald
and another shooter were
tied for HOA. His scores
during the 2-day competi
tion brought him down to a
shootoff for this coveted ti
tle. McDonalds score was
289 out of 300 targets from
the combined scores in
Skeet, Trap, and Sporting
Clays.
The shoot-off was the
final event of the evening. In
order to break the tie, the
shooters had to shoot 30
targets; 10 Skeet, 10 Trap,
and 10 Sporting Clays. Both
competitors broke 9 out of
10 in Skeet, 10 out of 10 in
Trap, and advanced to
Sporting Clays with a tie.
McDonald lost the coin
toss and had to shoot first.
McDonald dropped one in
his first pair, but shot the
next four pair clean, giving
him a score of 9 out of 10
hits. His competitor broke
the first two pair, dropped
one target on his third pair,
then dropped one target on
his fourth pair giving Mc
Donald the win.

tion that was held on No-

competed last week with
the women in Indiana and
the men taking the shorter
trip to Marietta.
Women
Brewton-Parker Wom
en's Wrestling closed out its
weekend trip to Fort Wayne
with the Warrior Open on
Saturday.
The Lady Barons com
peted in a field comprised
of 12 teams and finished
sixth with 100 team points.
A total of seven BPC grap-
plers earned placements in
the competition within a
tough field of competitors.
Alyssa Valdivia earned
the highest placement for
the Lady Barons with a
first-place finish in the 109
division. She picked up 25
points for Brewton-Parker
with a 5-0 record. She cap
tured two wins via pins and
two with 10-0 tech falls.
Two wins were over the 9th
and 15th-ranked grapplers
in the 109 class.
No. 20-ranked Leidaly
Rivera picked up a second-
place finish in the 130 divi
sion with a 3-1 record on
the day. One of her three
wins was over the 14th-
ranked grappler at 103 via a
14-2 tech fall. Her other
two victories were via falls.
Mel Mercado picked
up fifth place for 14 team
points with a 4-2 record on
the day at 143. She won
with two pins and a 4-1 de
cision. Hayden Varner gath
ered sixth place in the 116
division for nine points.
She picked up two wins
with bye's followed by a pin
for a 3-3 record.
No. 17-ranked Alesan-
dra Burgos finished sixth as
well for 11 points at 123.
She picked up a 3-3 record
on the day with a win over
the No. 19th-ranked grap
pler at 123. No.
12-ranked India Page also
finished in six but earned

Sporting Clays, and a 93 in
Trap. These scores placed
him first in AA State Skeet,
first in AA State Sporting
Clays, and fourth in AA
State Trap. McDonald was
also named to the Georgia
All-State Team for the 2021
season. His Crusaders team
also placed 2nd in AA State
Shotgun.
McDonald has partici
pated in Clay sports for 5
years at RTCA. He began
12 points for Brewton-
Parker. Page competed in
the 155 division with a 2-3
record, earning pins in both
victories.
Lastly, Brooke Hamil
ton finished seventh in the
130 division for 8.5 team
points. She picked up two
wins via fall.
Brewton-Parker will
now rest up and recharge
before returning to action
at the NWCA NAIA Multi-
Duals on Jan. 6-7 in Louis
ville, Ky.
Men
Brewton-Parker Men’s
Wrestling opened Mid-
South Conference South
Division action on Wednes
day night in the Eagles’
Nest in Marietta, Ga,
against Life University.
The (RV) Barons fell
to the No. 2-ranked Run
ning Eagles 40-9 with
Douglas Peppers and Lucas
DeSilva gathering wins over
NAIA Top-10 opponents.
“Tonight was a tough
challenge for the guys
against a really good pro
gram,” Coach Kenny Ma
son said. “This was our first
dual of the season, but I am
proud of our efforts and the
fight our guys showed.
“We have a lot of tech
nical things to work on and
clean up, but tonight should
be a great learning experi
ence for our guys to look
back on throughout the
season,” Mason added. “It is
also nice to get the first dual
out of the way and under
my belt. Looking forward
to what’s ahead for us.”
The dual began with
the 125-lb bout as Zayveon
Mitchell faced No. 1-ranked
Brandon Orum. Orum
managed to pin (2:22)
Mitchell to earn the Run
ning Eagles their first six
points of the night. The
133-lb class followed with
Keyshaun Taylor taking on
Keegan Slyter. Slyter
dropped Taylor via fall
shooting with the Crusaders
during his 8th grade year
and also participates with a
local team, Gator Creek
Young Guns. He is an avid
hunter, plays baseball, and
enjoys spending time with
his family and friends. Mc
Donald is looking forward
to competing with his team
mates next year. In the
meantime, he plans to com
pete with his local 4-H team,
his Gator Creek team in
SCTP, and in NSCA events.

In the 141-lb bout,
Bryant Santiago faced Jor
dan Mitchell. Santiago fell
by a 10-2 major decision
with Mitchell earning the
Running Eagles four addi
tional points, moving the
lead to 16-0. Kohlby Hop
per faced No. 2-ranked Ju
lian Hernandez in the 149-
lb bout but fell by an 11-2
major decision.
With a 20-0 lead, Life
picked up another win in
the 157-lb bout as Steven
Villalobos downed Levi
Bishop with a 21-5 tech fall
victory, moving the deficit
to 25 points. At 165, Cody
Thompson fell to No.
3-ranked Sid Ohl via fall
(1:54) to go down 31-0 in
the dual.
As for the 174-lb bout,
Peppers gave a spark to the
Barons with an upset per
formance recording a fall
(3:18) against the No.
1-ranked Asher Eichert to
give BPC six points, mak
ing the score 31-6. At 184,
No. 6-ranked DeSilva fol
lowed up with a 6-5 deci
sion over No. 8 Michael
Gibson, earning a Top-10
win and three points for the
Barons.
During the 197-lb
bout, Jonathan Whiting
faced No. 2-ranked Zane
Lanham. Whiting fell via
fall (1:22) with Whiting
moving Life’s lead to 37-9.
To wrap up the dual, Joel
Faglier faced JJ Perez and
battled hard in the 285-lb
bout. Perez managed to
hold on to an 8-5 lead to
win by decision to close the
dual with a 40-9 victory
over the Barons.
Brewton-Parker re
turned to action on Mon
day of this week as they
headed to Lebanon, TN. to
take on No. 7 Cumberland
(Tenn.) in MSC South Di
vision action.

The Treutlen County
High School Vikings bas
ketball teams took on
Wheeler County’s Bull
dogs last week in Alamo.
The girls picked up a win,
while the boys fell in a
close game.

played last week with the
women in Stillman, AL and
the men down in Lakeland,
FL.
Women

against SSAC opponent
Stillman (Ala.) on Saturday
afternoon in Tuscaloosa,
AL.
Saturday's game was
originally scheduled to hap
pen on Dec. 4 but was post
poned. The Lady Barons
(8-4, 2-2 SSAC) fell to the
Tigers (5-5, 1-2 SSAC) in a
tough road battle.
"We took one on the
chin today," Head
Coach Steve Edwards said.
"We were outworked and
Stillman was much tougher
than us. We aren'tvery tough
and today it showed. We
need to be tougher to maxi
mize our potential as a
team."
Stillman opened the
game with back-to-back
buckets to lead 5-0 before
Brewton-Parker answered
with two consecutive scores
themselves to pull within
one point. The Tigers did
not give up a lead to the
Lady Barons in the quarter
as they controlled the score
line for all but two equaliz
ing opportunities for Brew
ton-Parker. The Lady Bar
ons leveled the game at the
3:35 and 2:55 mark, but
Stillman managed to close
the quarter with a 22-17
lead.
The Tigers continued
to control the score in the
second period as they pulled
away to an 11-point, 28-17
lead in the first four minutes.
Brewton-Parker responded
with five points, but Still
man remained unfazed, go
ing on a 10-3 run to lead by
13 points. Brewton-Parker
closed the half outscoring
Stillman 7-4, but the Tigers
still led by 10 with a 42-32
lead at the break.
To open the third pe
riod, Stillman scored to
move its lead to 12 before
Brewton-Parker returned
with back-to-back jumpers
to pull under double-digits.
The Lady Barons were able
to pull the deficit down to
seven points, but the Tigers
outscored BPC 10-4 in the
final three minutes to lead
59-45 with a quarter to play.

Brewton-Parker going on a
long, 10-0 run that covered
about six minutes to pull the
deficit back to just four
points. Stillman closed the
game on a 6-1 run to pull
away and win the game 70-
61.

liams leading the way with
17 points followed by Madi
son Evans and Tajah'nae
Wiggins both scoring 14
points apiece.
Angel McRae led the
Lady Barons with 10 re
bounds and was two points
shy of a double-double per
formance with eight points.
Wiggins gathered a team
second-best eight rebounds
on the afternoon.
As a team, BPC shot for
40.7% (24-of-59) from the
field, 25% (6-of-24) from
three, and 53.8% (7-of-13)
from the free-throw fine.
The BPC bench produced
25 points. The Tigers out-
rebounded the Lady Barons
40-34 on the day. Both
teams were close in both as
sists and turnovers. Stillman
led 15-14 in steals with the
Lady Barons turning the ball
over 16 times while the Ti
gers gave it up 18.
The overall series
against Stillman is now tied
4-4.
Men
Brewton-Parker Men's
Basketball fell 53-51 to (RV)
Florida College in Lakeland,
FL, on Saturday.
The Barons (1-12)
dropped the neutral site
matchup against the Falcons
(12-1) on the campus of
Southeastern (FL).
"We have been playing
better as of late but still not
good enough to close games
out," Head Coach Stephen
Birchfield said. "This is our
second consecutive game
lost by a single possession
against either a ranked op
ponent or one who is receiv
ing votes."
"Our guys need to con
tinue fighting," Birchfield
added. "When the wins be
gin, they should come in
bunches. We have to con
tinue playing together and
working on dialing in the
fundamentals."
Vereen led the trio as
he captured a gold medal
in the 109kg+ category.
He won his first senior
meet title with a perfect
6-for-6 competition per
formance. Vereen
snatched 155, 160, and
165 while also completing
195, 200, and 205 in the
clean and jerk for a total of
370kg to secure the gold
and a new personal best.
As for Walker in the
87kg+ class, she picked up
a bronze medal with
Wheeler
points to the Bulldogs.
Wheeler held on for a 65-
60 win over Treutlen.
This week the Vi
kings took on the Portal
Panthers on the road on
Tuesday after presstime.
The boys will play on Sat
urday at the Calhoun
County Shootout against
Chattahoochee County
at 5:30 p.m.
Drops 2
The Barons opened the
game with a score nearly
two minutes into the game,
but the Falcons quickly lev
eled the game and captured
the lead which they slowly
built up to double digits,
leading 12-2 with 12 min
utes to play.
After a three from BPC
to pull within single digits,
FC went on a 10-1 run to
lead by 16 points before the
Barons were able to score
from the field. The Falcons
built up to an 18-point lead
with around two minutes to
play before the Barons
closed out the half on an
11-2 run to diminish the
deficit to just nine points
with FC leading 31-22 at the
break.
The second half opened
with back-and-forth action
as both teams traded scores
in the first couple of min
utes. Over the course of the
next few minutes, Brewton-
Parker slowly demolished
the double-digit deficit with
an 11-0 run to be down just
three points with nine min
utes to play. Florida College
answered with a 7-2 run to
lead by eight points with
two minutes erased from
the clock.
After moving the lead
to 47-38, the Barons scored
six consecutive points to
drop the Falcons' lead to
three points with three min
utes remaining in the game.
Brewton-Parker fought hard
in the final minutes but were
outscored 6-5 within the last
minute to fall by just two
points, 53-51.
Two Barons recorded
double-digit points as Floyd
Davis and Nic Pullum both
gathered 10 points apiece.
Bryce Wilson notched a
game-high 13 rebounds to
lead the Barons' rebounding
efforts. Wilson's 13 boards
assisted the Barons in out-
rebounding the Falcons 46-
43.
A trio of BPC student-
athletes gathered four assists
each for the day. As a team,
BPC shot for 33.9% (21-of-
62) from the field, 24% (6-
of-25) from three, and
27.3% (3-of-ll) from the
charity stripe. Brewton-
Parker gave up 16 turnovers
with Florida College giving
up 13. The Falcons took ad
vantage of the opportunities
as they outscored the Bar
ons 21-6 off turnovers.

jerk of 117kg for a total of
212kg, also a new per
sonal best total.
Daniels competed in
the 71kg category and re
corded a total of 190kg for
the event. She snatched
75kg and 78kg, then fol
lowed with 107kg as well
as 112 in the clean and
jerk for the 190kg total.
