Daily lane closures are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Vidalia Onion Packing Begins April 17 By Makaylee Randolph Staff Writer mrandolphadvance@gmail.com The first week of packing for Vidalia On ions will occur the same week as the Vidalia Onion Festival, making this year’s celebra tion a true beginning-of-harvest event. The Vidalia Onion Commission has determined April 17 to be the best packing date this season; this determination is made based on the soil quality and weather in the area, and differs from year-to-year. Begin ning this date, onions will be shipped to gro cery stores across the nation, and will remain available until September. Georgia Agricultural Commissioner Tyler Harper commented on the event. “It’s an exciting time for farmers and producers in our state and for consumers across the country as we look forward to enjoying the sweet onion once again,” he remarked. “The Vidalia onion has become a sought-after ingredient by professional chefs and home cooks alike, and we’re proud to grow them right here in Georgia.” Sweet Onion Autism Support Group The Sweet Onion Autism Support Group will meet Thursday, April 13, at 6 p.m. at 912 Nutrition in Vidalia. Tire Amnesty Week The Cities of Vidalia and Lyons will host the annual Tire Amnesty Week from Monday, April 10, until Friday, April 14. Tires should be placed out by the curb on the right of way by residents within city limits by noon on Thursday, April 13, and will be picked up free of charge.
