A SPOOKY REOPENING - The Altama Museum of Art & History welcomed guests back
into its facility during the Spooky Reopening Halloween celebration on Friday, October
27. Previously, the museum was closed to revamp the exhibits and the facility.
LYONS PARADE REGISTRATION OPEN - The Lyons Lighted Christmas Parade will be held
Friday, December 1, at 6:00 p.m. The deadline to enter and be eligible forjudging is
Monday, November 13. Parade entries are free, but you must register to participate.

Education recently com
pleted the "whole board
governance training" por
tion of their annual train
ing requirements as set by
law. Since 2009, the State
of Georgia has required
three hours of whole-board
training in addition to the
six hours of required in
dividual training for each
member.
Dr. Donna Hinton, the
senior board developer for
the Georgia School Board
Association, facilitated the
training and said one of the
areas that came forth out of
the Board's "self-study" was
that they "consider norms
and protocols, and actually
defined what norms and
protocols are." Hinton went
on to say that "this clarifies
everybody's role from the
Superintendent's role to

tober 27, to consider and
vote on the "Norms and
Protocol" that were devel
oped during the training.

eral Contractors of Georgia
(AGC Georgia) is part
nering with Ace Electric,
Inc.; Choate Construction
Company and West Con
struction Company to host
construction students from
high schools in 26 local
counties for the Southeast
Georgia Skills Challenge.
The event will be held on
Thursday, Nov. 2, begin
ning at 8:30 a.m. at Bulloch
County Agricultural Com
plex (44 Arena Boulevard).
This Skills Challenge is
one of eight regional events
held throughout Georgia
that will host over 2,300
students from nearly 100
schools. Competitions held
at the Southeast Georgia
Skills Challenge are: Blue
print Reading, Carpentry,
Electrical, Heavy Equip
ment Operation, Masonry,
Plumbing, Roofing and
Welding.
“As one of the host
contractors, we are proud
to partner with the local
industry and AGC Georgia
to promote careers in con
struction while developing
our future workforce,” said
Matt West, President of
West Construction Com
pany.
With nearly 200 stu
dents competing in the
Southeast Georgia Skills
Challenge, several hundred
additional students will ob
serve in hopes of competing
in the future. These students
will also benefit from con
versations with construc
tion industry professionals
who host interactive activi
ties for students to become
more familiar with specific
construction trades.
“Skills Challenges al
low high school students
enrolled in construction
programs an opportunity
to showcase their trade
talents in a ‘game day’ at
mosphere,” AGC Georgia
CEO Mike Dunham said.
“For some competitors,
this event is a ‘Friday Night
Lights’ experience with the
opportunity to receive job
offers from participating
industry representatives.
Each year, we are proud
to partner with amazing
member contracting firms
to showcase rewarding con
struction career opportuni
ties to student competitors
and observers.”
Students from con
struction programs in the
following counties are in
vited to compete in the
Southeast Georgia Skills
Challenge: Appling, Bacon,
Brantley, Bryan, Bulloch,
Camden, Candler, Cha
tham, Effingham, Emanuel,
Evans, Glynn, Jeff Davis,
Jenkins, Liberty, Long,
McIntosh, Montgomery,
Pierce, Screven, Tattnall,
Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen,
Wayne and Wheeler.
Students who are mem
bers of SkillsUSA Georgia
and compete in carpentry,
electrical, masonry, plumb
ing and welding at this
event are eligible to earn a
bid to the State Leadership
and Skills Competition
(SLSC) that will be held in
February 2024.
