BOE to
vote on
Mariachi
class Tues.
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
The Barrow County Board of
Education could vote next week
on whether to allow a contro
versial Hispanic-oriented music
education class at Apalachee
High School next spring.
Teacher Kerry Bryant wants
AHS to offer a Mariachi music
class, which would be open to
all students, as a way to intro
duce them to folk music and
teach them about Mexican and
South American culture.
But the idea has been meet
with resistance from some BOE
members, including one who
suggested at an earlier meeting
that it could open the door for
illegal immigrants to come into
the county.
The BOE decided to put the
matter on next Tuesday's agen
da for a vote.
Bryant said Tuesday night the
course would appeal to students
of all backgrounds. It would
be limited to 20 students since
funding for the class would
only pay for that many instru
ments at this time,
“It has musical and educa
tional benefits,” Bryant said.
“The course will engage stu
dents and families. This class is
a combination of social studies
using music as a medium.”
AHS principal David McGee,
who was also at Tuesday's work
session, is also in favor of the
class.
BOE chairman William
Bramlett said he was concerned
about whether the course had
met the superintendent’s “check
list” and wasn't sure about
moving forward since superin
tendent Ron Saunders was not
in attendance at the meeting.
