Lady Wildcats post 20 wins this fall

After Madison County
moved to within 28-7, the
Wildcats scored once more
before halftime on a 1-yard
run by Lee with just seven
seconds left.
Apalachee had kicked a
field goal but two personal
fouls on the Red Raiders set
the Wildcats up at the 1-yard
line.
With a timeout to spare
and 10 seconds to work with,
Davis decided to send his
offense back on the field and
try to add another touch
down.
The strategy worked as
The Loganville Red Devils,

assistant Eric Godfree, is very
disciplined and very physical,
Corley said.
“They are not necessarily
athletic but they overwhelm
you with their execution,” the
Winder-Barrow coach said.

Apalachee took control at
halftime.
Madison County would
score four touchdowns in the
second half using the arm
of quarterback Jacob Owens.
The Red Raiders were so
far behind, however, all the
points didn’t matter in the
end.
Madison County finished
the game with 480 yards of
total yards which often times

league. He has the speed and
mobility to cause you some
major concerns. He is quite
a weapon and can throw the
football deep.”
Defensively, the Red Devils
use a simple scheme overall,
Corley said.

he said. “The proof is in the

There is still plenty to play

CROSS COUNTRY
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
The Apalachee High School
cross country teams traveled
to Conyers Saturday for the
Region 8-AAAA meet.
The Wildcats finished sixth
at the meet while the Lady
Wildcats were seventh over
all.
“Having been a head coach
in another sport probably
helped in that area,” he said.
Corley said one major dif
ference in being a head coach
in basketball as compared to
being a head coach in foot
ball is the number of people
involved.
More coaches and more
players are involved with foot-
in extra innings. Needing a
win to keep playing, the Lady
Wildcats dropped a 3-2 deci
sion to Madison County.
“Our girls played well this
year and once again made the
playoffs,” Cavey said.
Courtney Gunby compiled
a 15-7-3 record and recorded
232 strikeouts in 155 innings.
She also led the team with a
1.17 earned run average.
Leadoff batter Ansley
Thompson, a sophomore, had
35 singles and led the team
“I’m not sure what that was
all about,” Hulsey said. “I was
disappointed we did not make
our routine but it was my most
talented senior girl and boy. It
was a freak thing. I am glad it
happened this week and not
later.”
Being seventh means
Winder-Barrow will compete
after intermission this week
end at state.
“I am happy about that,”
Hulsey said. “I think we are in
great position.”

LEARNING
PROCESS
“I have learned quite a bit,”
Corley admitted. “This season
hasn’t gone the way we would
have liked. We have gotten
better every week. The kids
don’t have any quit or give up
in them. I believe we are clos
ing the gap between us and the
with a .299 average.
Sophomore Elissa Greene
had a .283 average and drove
in 12 runs.
Apalachee will lose five
seniors from this year’s
squad to graduation including
Gunby, Ashley Goley, Hayley
Adkins and Katie Ehling.

have our younger girls step

Peachtree Ridge, Rome,
Brookwood, Shiloh and
Winder-Barrow.
“I feel like we are in the hunt
for a state championship,” the
Winder-Barrow coach said.
“We just have to make our
routine. There were a lot of
good things about our routine
Saturday. It was much cleaner
than the week before.”
Winder-Barrow will com
pete in the afternoon session
Saturday in Columbus. The
session begins at 2 p.m.
ing the course in 18:44.51.

Corley added three new
coaches to his staff prior to
the 2008 season.
Corley and his Bulldoggs
will close out the 2008 sea
son against Loganville High

p.m. Offseason work will
begin almost immediately as
plans for 2009 are underway.
