“We had some chances,” Corley said. “We
needed to capitalize on them.”
The WBHS defense forced Loganville to
punt the football on its first possession of the
game. The Bulldoggs were unable to move,
however, and had the punt as well.
The Red Devils put the first points of the
game on the board on an eight-play, 74-yard
drive capped by a fumble recovery in the end-
zone with 3:15 left in the first quarter.
LHS (9-1) moved in front 13-0 on a 29-yard
run with 9:15 left in the first half.
The best drives for Winder-Barrow came on
its fourth and fifth series.

41-yard line and included seven plays and
two first downs before a fumble after a pass
completion resulted in the Red Devils regain
ing possession.
The fifth possession of the half for WBHS
included two first downs but ended with a punt
on fourth and fifth.
With the outcome still in doubt, LHS added
a 39-yard score with 1:14 left in the third
quarter.
The Bulldoggs’ touchdown came on a 1-yard
run by Greg Dixon with 6.7 seconds left.

The Wildcats only ran six
offensive plays in the opening
quarter.
Apalachee managed to tie
the game at halftime which
gave the Wildcats some need
ed momentum in rainy condi
tions.
“We didn’t punt in the sec
ond half as we settled in and
gained some confidence,”
Davis said.
The come-from-behind vic
tory was a character builder
for his team, Davis said.
“It was nice to be able
to weather the storm so to
speak,” the coach said. “We
kept our focus and beat a
quality opponent. It was great
to see our team do that.”

COMPETITION CHEERLEADING
Cheer Doggs earn sixth place
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
The Winder-Barrow High
School competition cheer
leaders took sixth place at the
co-ed state meet in Columbus
Saturday.
Coach Jerri Hulsey’s squad
turned in their top perfor
mance of the season but had
to battle three miscues which
resulted in the sixth place
showing.
“I thought our seniors did a
great job of keeping everyone
calm and focused while we
were in Columbus,” Hulsey
said. “Their leadership was
invaluable. We had a mixup
on a tumbling pass and a bob
ble on our pyramind. Then
one of our first-year athletes
forgot part of the dance.”
The coach said you cannot
make mistakes and expect to
win the state title.
Woodland claimed the over
all title which was deserved,
Hulsey said.
Peachtree Ridge was run
ner-up followed by Roswell,
Rome, Camden County and
Winder-Barrow.
“I am most sorry for our
nine seniors who will not get
another chance to win a state
championship,” Hulsey said.
“There is something to be said
for WBHS consistently from
year to year being in the chase
for a state championship. The
athletes work very hard in
the offseason to improve their
tumbling skills.”
WBHS has one of the more
successful state programs.
Apalachee squad shines at state sectionals
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
When summarizing how her squad did at
the state competition, Apalachee High School
competition cheerleading coach Stephanie
Jordan termed it “amazing.”
The Wildcat squad tied for eighth at the
sections although the tiebreaker prevented
Apalachee from advancing to the finals.
“Despite this, it was the best performance we
had all season,” Jordan said.
The Apalachee varsity squad previously fin
ished third at the region meet at Loganville
High School, something coach Stephanie
Jordan viewed as a big accomplishment for her
team since it was year one in Class AAAA.
“I am very proud of what these girls have
accomplished this season,” Jordan said. “The
same 16 team members who started the season
are finishing the year together. That says a
great deal about them.”
The varsity, with cheerleaders in grades
10-12, was second at the Mill Creek Invitational
and also earned several other top sixth finishes
at meets this fall.
The Apalachee competition squad is the
same as the varsity football squad so team
members pull double duty most weekends,
Jordan said.
Team members include Kaitlin Pritchett,
Ashley Caughey, Lindsey Pritchett, Meagan
Perry, Daniele Gentry, Ashley Smith, Kayla
Moreland, Olivia Hafliger, Rebecca Taylor,
Shannon Basford, Ashley Schwanemann,
Lauren Stapleton, Candace Zachery, Marah
Brock, Hope Manders and Cassie Davis.
The Apalachee High School junior varsity
competition squad, consisting of athletes in
grades 8-10, also enjoyed success this fall
season.
JV squad members include Jordan Tullis,
Taylor Walker, Jade Rogers, Alyssa Harrison,
Victoria Gaddis, Natalie Hopkins, Morgan
Scarboro, Rebecca Powers, Caitlin Blalock,
Ashley Stout, Chelsea Thrower, Abigail Gebo,
Samantha Whitson, Savannah Morton and
Rochell Ridlehoover.
