REPORTS ON CRIMES. WRECKS. FIRES & COURTS
Two teens burned in fire last week
Winder Fire Department also responds to four calls
Two Barrow County teens
were seriously burned last
week when they put a match
to some gasoline.
On Friday night around
10:14 p.m., Barrow County
firefighters responded to a
call about an outbuilding
fire at 1035 Finch Road.
But when units arrived, they
discovered that two 13-year-
old boys had been seriously
injured after igniting gaso
line with a match.
Barrow Fire Chief Robert
Post said both boys suffered
second- and third-degree
bums, one to the upper por
tion of his body and the
other to the lower portion.
One boy was taken by his
parent to Barrow Regional
Hospital and then trans
ported to Grady Memorial
Hospital in stable condition.
The other was airlifted in
serious condition to Grady.
The boys’ names and fur
ther information about their
conditions have not been
released by fire department
officials.
OTHER COUNTY
FIRES
Several other county fires
also kept firefighters busy
and destroyed two homes.
On Sunday, firefighters
responded around 11 a.m.
to 1428 Elliot’s Lane in
Auburn where they found a
two-story residential struc
ture fully involved in flames.
The home was completely
destroyed.
The family was not at
home at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire is under
investigation by the Fire
Investigation Unit, accord
ing to a press release.
Around 1 p.m. Monday,
a fire destroyed a one-sto
ry home on Lloyd Blakely
Road, displacing a family
of five.
“It was 50-percent involved
when we got there,” Post
said. “No one was home at
the time.”
The cause of this fire also
is under investigation.
Last Lriday, a fire
destroyed three outbuildings
and a motor home. Just after
3 p.m., county fire units
responded to a fire in the
back yard of a home at 134
Plantation Road.
The first unit arriving at
the scene discovered an out
building and a motor home
on fire, with the flames
moving toward a second
outbuilding and toward a
neighbor’s yard.
“The fire was moving
very fast across the yard and
extending to a neighbor’s
yard at 155 Scott Drive,”
stated Lt. Scott Dakin in a
press release, “firefighters
responded to both residences
and performed an aggressive
attack to control the fire.”
A total of three outbuild
ings and the motor home
were destroyed or damaged
by the fire. There were no
injuries.
The cause of the fire is
listed as a human act and is
under investigation.
WINDER FIRE
REPORTS
The Winder Fire
Department responded to
four fire calls between Nov.
4 and Nov. 7 each of which
involved stove fires.
The first call came at 5:15
p.m. Nov. 4 after an elderly
homeowner at 165 Park Ave.
left a flammable object on
top of the home’s heated
stove.
“The kitchen area suffered
heavy fire and smoke dam
age, but the rest of the house
had very, very minor dam
age,” said Winder Fire Chief
Ray Mattison, noting that a
young couple next door is
now assisting the victims.
The second call came at
1:30 a.m. Nov. 6 about a fire
at 128 Lily Drive.
Fire crews arrived with
in four minutes and found
heavy smoke and flames
at the rear of the house,
Mattison said.
“It started from the cook
ing top of the stove. It was
ruled accidental. Someone
turned the stove on uninten
tionally and had left some
thing on top,” he said.
“This house suffered mod-
erate-to-heavy damage. The
good thing was that no one
was injured. Red Cross was
contacted for that family and
worked with them on find
ing a place to stay. They
were renting the home.”
The city’s two other fires
were minor but happened
Friday within an hour of
each other.
The first was at 191
Bellview Street. That call
came in at 9:17 a.m. The fire
started after someone turned
on the oven with a pizza box
inside.
“The oven was turned on
accidentally, and the box
caught fire,” Mattison said.
“It smoked up the apartment
but did very little damage.”
An hour later, at 10:20
a.m., the city fire depart
ment received a call from
a resident at 184 Colonial
Hills Road.
“Upon our arrival, the fire
was out. The individual had
put the fire out. It started
in the oven. We assisted
in removing smoke and
checked to see if the fire had
gone past the oven.”
Mattison said it is very
unusual to have so many
kitchen fires in such a short
span of time.
“We’re all living very busy
lives. We have to focus on
what we’re doing, especially
in the kitchen around appli
ances,” he said. “If you turn
on an appliance, stay with
it. And when you leave the
kitchen, make sure it’s off.
It’s a very basic safety tip.”
FIRE RESPONSE
Fire personnel were dispatched to this house fire on
Lloyd Hodges Road off Mathews School Road behind
