Bulldoggs rally to down Eastside
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
The Winder-Barrow High
School varsity boys basketball
team was seemingly climbing
uphill for most of its sea
son opener against Eastside
Saturday.
However, when the final
buzzer sounded the Bulldoggs
had emerged with a 53-46 win
allowing coach Eli Connell’s
team a chance to begin the
new campaign on a postive
note.
“Defensively, we played
pretty well the whole game,”
Connell said. “We held them
to 46 points which is some
thing you will take.”
The game was part of the
Tabo Tipoff Tournament host
ed by Jefferson High School.
D.J. Butler’s defensive play
was a key to the win, the
coach said.
“His defense helped lead
to points,” Connell said. “He
had several big steals which
helped create opportunities.”
It was Eastside, however,
who took the early lead.
The Bulldoggs missed some
changes and free throws and
had to battle from behind.
“It seemed things were
just going against us early,”
Connell said.
Free throw shooting was
something the coach was
definitely not pleased with
as WBHS finished the game
12-of-30 from the charity
stripe.
“That will get you beat most
games,” Connell said. “You
should walk in the gym from
game one and make your free
throws.”
Still trailing by seven points
going into the fourth quar
ter, the Bulldogs received
a big 3-pointer from Shun
Thurmond with 4:30 left to
pull within four. A steal and
jumper by Thurmond would
later give WBHS the lead.
A big fourth quarter, in
which the Bulldoggs out-
scored Eastside 27-13, turned
out to be the difference.
WBHS is scheduled to
play Franklin County in the
second round of Tabo Tipoff
Tournament Wednesday at
8:30 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Lady Bulldoggs begin campaign with win
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
Coach Brenda Hill’s Winder-Barrow High School
Lady Bulldoggs’ basketball team posted a 63-37 vic
tory in their season opener Saturday in a game which
was part of the Jefferson Tabo Tipoff Tournament.
The win, at least partially, was a result of sound
defensive play, the coach said.
“We came out focused and ready to go,” Hill said.
“Central Gwinnett is very athletic and they forced
us to turn the basketball over some. After we settled
down, we did a good job of kicking it out to our
guards.”
Saturday’s game itself presented a unique chal
lenge for the Lady Doggs.
