HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Lady Wildcats win in season opener
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
The excitement was evident
in Michael Parks' voice.
The Apalachee High School
varsity girls basketball coach
was more pleased that his team
had recorded a win in its sea
son opener against Commerce
High School Saturday. The
51-41 win was only the sec
ond time in school history the
Lady Wildcats have won their
season opener.
“Overall, it was a typical
first game,” Parks said. “We
are so aggressive that we
committed a lot of fouls.”
In the first half, all of
Commerce's points, with the
exception of three field goals,
came from the free throw
line.
“We practice so aggres
sively that it carried over to
the game,” Parks said. “We
had that first-game nervous
energy that I expected.”
One area Parks does want
to see his team improve in is
turnouts. The Lady Wildcats
had 19 turnovers in the open
er.
“We start three freshmen
so that should decrease as the
season goes on,” the coach
said.
Still, when you are attempt
ing to build a program like
Parks is with Apalachee, a
season opener win like the
win recorded by the Lady
Wildcats Saturday is always
welcome.
“All in all it was a great
win,” Parks said. “We were
able to rotate players in and
get everyone playing time.
I am proud of the team. We
have worked really hard for
the start of the season going
back to the spring.”
Kelsey Montgomery led the
team with 18 points followed
by Lacresha Mayweather
with 11.
Apalachee is now off
until Dec. 2 when it trav
els to Rockdale County High
School in Conyers for its
Region 8-AAAA opener.

days between the first and
second game will allow his
team to work on the areas that
need improvement.
“We’ll go back to work and
see if we can continue to
get better,” Parks said. “We
are still excited about starting
the new season with a win.
It means a great deal to our
program.”
The Lady Wildcats remain
on the road Dec. 5 when they
travel to Loganville.
HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Wildcats cruise to win in season opener
BY CHRIS BRIDGES
For the Apalachee High
School varsity boys basketball
team, it’s “so far, so good.”
The Wildcats put a past
ing on visiting Commerce
Saturday with a 70-37 vic
tory. Dennis Whitley scored a
team-high 23 points followed
by a 13-point, nine-rebound
effort from Chaun Gresham.
“We hadn't had a great deal
of practice time as a complete
team since football season
just ended,” Apalachee coach
Kevin Morris said. “Our
offense did not play very well
in my opinion.”
Commerce began the game
in a 2-3 zone, something the
Wildcats don’t see a great
deal of.
“We don't use it so we don’t
practice against it,” Morris
said.
Whitley then got a hot hand
for AHS and John Ansley,
who finished with 11 points
off the bench, helped move
Commerce out of its zone
defense.
The second quarter proved
to be the turning point of
the contest as the Wildcats
went on a 22-3 win. All of
Commerce's points in the
game’s second eight minutes
were from the free throw line.
“At that point, we turned it
up defensively,” Morris said.
“I believe you don’t need a

great deal of time to go out
and give good effort.”
The win allowed Morris to
play his entire team and allow
the players to gain valuable
early-season experience.
The Apalachee team will
have all week to prepare
for next Tuesday’s game at
Rockdale County. Morris
said the players will have off
Thursday for Thanksgiving.
“Rockdale County will be
an important game because it
begins our region schedule,”
the coach said.
WBHS girls continued from 3B
The WBHS girls had
to begin play at 9:30 a.m.
Saturday.
“We practiced a couple of
Saturday mornings to help get
ready for the game,” Hill said.
“We talked with the players
about getting rest and eat
ing properly and getting their
blood circulating.”
The Lady Bulldogs, in the
end, seemed to adjust fine and
emerged with the win in their
season opener.
“Defense has been our best
weapon,” Hill said.
WBHS lost only two seniors
to graduation from last sea
son's squad so Hill has plenty
of experience back.
“As the game went on
Saturday, everything seemed
to come together for us,” the
coach said.
