Busy summer for 4-H members
Barrow 4-H has had a
summer of fun in 2016 with
day camps and classes of all
kinds.
From May 24-26 local
4-H members held their
annual Science Day Camp.
The three-day program
featured experiments and
lessons on topics in astron
omy, environmental science,
meteorology, and engineer
ing and was attended by
more than 20 youth.
The classes were planned
and taught entirely by 4-H
teen leaders and featured
such unique lessons as the
toilet paper solar system,
nature scavenger hunt and
crush rockets. The 2016
camp was done in a part
nership with instructor Lani
Pacetti at Sims Academy of
Innovation and Technology,
this allowed the camp to use
Sims classrooms and tech
nology for the activities.
Following Science Camp,
the Barrow Robotics team
held its first Lego Robotics
Academy May 31-June 2 at
Sims Academy.
Attended by 32 youth, the
Robotics Academy walked
the youth through the basics
of robotics design and
programming using Lego
Mindstorms NXT kits.
The youth were organized
into teams of three and
worked together through
the course of the program
that was taught by the high
school members of the Bar-
row Robotics team along
with mentor and Mechatron-
ics instructor Curtis Mathis.
The final day of the
camp the kids took part in a
FIRST Lego League styled
competition designed by
the instructors called Mars
Explorers. The youth had
to design and program a
robot that maneuvered on
a table sized playing field
to retrieve soil samples and
bring them to science sta
tions scattered across the
surface of Mars.
Wahsega Friday Fun Day
is a sort of mini-camp that
was held June 3rd-4th at
Wahsega 4-H Center near
Dahlonega. The program
is essentially a week long
camp crammed together
into the two days. It gives
kids who would not nor
mally have the opportunity
to attend summer camp a
chance to experience this
4-H activity.
Activities include high
ropes courses, fishing,
swimming, nature hikes,
herpetology lab, team work
challenges and many more
unique opportunities.
Jam Day/Food Frenzy
held on June 14 is a food
based program which teach
es the youth the unique art
of making homemade jam.
Attended by 12 youth they
had a “smashing” time cre
ating strawberry jam and
blueberry jam in this messy
class. Food Frenzy is a take
on television cooking com
petitions which has youth
working to making a meal
using odd ball ingredients.
SURVIVAL SHELTER
Maggie McBride works
on her survival shelter
during Wahsega Friday
Fun Day.
The class works to
encourage youth to make
their own food rather than
relying on microwave meals
and promote kitchen safety.
The three-round com
petition had youth using
mystery ingredients as they
created oddball nachos, spe
cialty drinks, and reinvented
hot dogs.
