Georgia Do Not Call List is free, officials say
The Georgia Public Service Commission is remind
ing consumers that there is no charge to be on the
Georgia Do Not Call List.
However, the commission continues to receive
checks from consumers wishing to have their tele
phone number(s) added to the list. While it may be
unusual for a governmental agency to say it, The PSC
said it doesn’t want consumers’ money, according to
a statement. When consumers register their phone
numbers with the Federal Do Not Call Registry, those
numbers are automatically included on the Georgia
Do Not Call List. And, since there is no charge to
be on the federal registry, it is not necessary for con
sumers to send checks requesting that their numbers
be added to the Georgia List. The lists are free. The
Georgia Public Service Commission is returning on
average, about 20 checks each month to consumers.
To enroll with the Federal Do Not Call Registry,
consumers must call from the telephone number they
wish to register, 1-888-382-1222, or to enroll online
go to www.donotcall.gov. The Federal Do Not Call
Register was established in June 2003.
To report violations, contact the Federal
Communications Commission at 1-888-225-5322.

GRANT AWARDED
Jackson EMC Foundation board member Shade Storey (far left) and Jackson EMC’s Jefferson
district manager Don Stewart (far right) present a check for $15,000 to (l-r) Jackson County Family
Connection board member Hasco Craver, Lindsay’s Legacy mentor coordinator Lisa Stephens, and
Family Connection executive director Nikki Adams-Morris. The grant will be used to fund the coor
dinator’s position for the mentoring program, which serves students in kindergarten through 12th
grade in Jackson County, Jefferson and Commerce school systems.
Lindsay’s Legacy gets Jackson EMC Foundation grant
The Jackson County Family Connection has been
awarded a $15,000 grant by the Jackson EMC
Foundation for the Lindsay’s Legacy mentoring pro
gram.
Lindsay’s Legacy, named in honor of the county’s
first mentoring program coordinator Jack Lindsey,
uses trained volunteers to work with public schools
students who need individual support.
Students being mentored build skills, knowledge,
personal attributes and positive attitudes. Mentors act
as guides as they work with the students to ensure
they become healthy, educated, employable and
connected through participation in family and com
munity life.
Throughout the program, schools evaluate the stu
dent’s reading, math, social studies and language arts
skills, along with monitoring behavior, tardiness and
absenteeism.
Grant funds will be used to fund the mentoring
program’s part-time coordinator position.
Foundation grants are funded through the Operation
Round Up program, to which 90 percent of Jackson
EMC’s members contribute. Participating members’
monthly electric bills are rounded up to the next dol
lar amount, an average of $6 per year.
Since the beginning of the program in 2005, more
than $1.85 million has been awarded by the Jackson
EMC Foundation since 2005, including 155 grants to
organizations and 72 grants to individuals.
Jackson EMC Foundation grants assist charitable
and community organizations, as well as individu
als. Any individual or organization in the counties
served by Jackson EMC — Athens/Clarke, Banks,
Barrow, Franklin, Gwinnett, Hall, Jackson, Lumpkin,
Madison and Oglethorpe counties — may apply for a
foundation grant.
Those seeking funding must complete a grant appli
cation, available at local Jackson EMC offices or as
an interactive .pdf form at http://www.jacksonemc.
