Swimming
Swim and dive Hawks defeat North Gwinnett
It was another good outing for the Mill Creek
Hawks swim and dive team, as they came away
with a win over North Gwinnett with a combined
score of 379.5 to 222.5. The girls stayed unde
feated at 6-0 with a 191-106 win, while the boys’
record improved to 5-1 with a 188.5-116.5 win.

The team of David Dudley, Tom White, Matt
Turnblom and John Petronaci took first in the boys’
200-yard medley relay, while the team of Parker
Schwab, Chase Wilson Cristian Cardona, and John
Petronaci took first in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle
relay.
The team of Caitlin Munro, Katie Hayes,
Samantha Akoubian, and Caroline Roloff took
top honors in the girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay,
while the team of Cristian Cardona, Chase Wilson,
Matt Turnblom and Zach Tillman won in the boys’
400-yard freestyle relay.
Several divers achieved new state cuts during the
event, including Creed, Akoubian, Caitlin Munro,
Petronaci, and Schwab.
Next up for the Mill Creek swim and dive team is
a matchup with Peachtree Ridge at Mountain Park
Pool on Saturday. The meet is scheduled for a 6:45
p.m. start.

Wrestling
Mill Creek takes 9th
at Hooch Invitational
It was another solid outing for a
growing and improving Mill Creek
wrestling team, as the Hawks took
ninth place out of 18 teams com
peting in the Hooch Invitational
at Chattahoochee High School in
Alpharetta over the weekend.
Josh Harrison finished the meet
in third place, in the 125 lb. cat
egory, going 4-1. Nick Voss fin
ished in fifth place in the 152
lb. category, going 4-2. Tommy
Caputo finished in fifth place in
the 171 lb. category, going 4-2,
and Jodan Fitch finished in sixth
place in the 285 lb. category,
going 2-3.
Hawks wrestling coach David
Landis says his team is improv
ing, but they have a ways to go.
“The next few years will be
better because of the numbers we
have in the room and in the youth
program,” he said. “I hope our
guys will use the duals as a learn
ing experience. They will get to
see some of the best in the state.”
His team will get that chance
this weekend at the varsity Area
Duals, which are scheduled to
get underway at 9 a.m. Saturday
morning in Duluth.
Auto Racing
Sprint Cup driver
to appear at LNS
Racers will warm up their
engines for a good cause this week
end, as Lanier National Speedway
will host the first annual Ice Cold
Shriner Bowl on Jan. 12 and 13,
with a portion of proceeds raised
benefiting the Shriners Hospital
Charities.
Drivers from local divisions will
compete in practice and qualify
ing on Saturday, with races to be
held at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Also
on Sunday, Sprint Cup driver and
Georgia native David Ragan will
make an appearance, just before
heading off for pre-season test
ing at the Daytona International
Speedway.

Baseball
Baseball camp set Feb. 9
Jackson County Comprehensive
High School will play host for
Panther Baseball Camp on
Saturday, Feb. 9 from 9 a.m.
until 1 p.m. The camp will be
held at Panther Field at JCCHS
and will be open to players ages
7-14. Registration will be $20.
The camp will allow players to
receive instruction from JCCHS
head coach Tommy Fountain and
his staff, as well as former college
players. The camp will include
instruction in skill and position
specific defensive groups, hitting
and pitching. All participants will
receive a camp T-shirt.
