Area students earn degrees at UNG
For the spring 2023 semes
ter, the University of North
Georgia (UNG) awarded
more than 1,500 degrees and
26 certificates to graduates.
About 1,200 graduates partic
ipated in the spring 2023 com
mencement ceremonies held
May 5-6 at the Convocation
Center at UNG’s Dahlonega
Campus.
Local graduates included:

Southern New Hampshire announces president’s list
Southern New Hampshire
University (SNHU) has an
nounced its winter 2023
president’s list. The winter
terms run from January to
May.
Full-time undergraduate
students who have earned
a minimum grade-point av
erage of 3.700 and above
for the reporting term are
named to the president’s list.
Full-time status is achieved
by earning 12 credits over
each 16-week term or paired
8-week terms grouped in
fall, winter/spring, and sum
mer.

Mason named to
Furman’s dean’s list
Aria Mason, of Hoschton, has been named to the
Furman University dean’s list for the 2023 spring se
mester.
Furman’s dean’s list is composed of full-time under
graduate students who earn a grade point average of
3.4 or higher on a four-point system.
Gallman makes dean’s
list at Jacksonville St.
More than 1.100 students have been named to the
dean’s list for their outstanding academic performance
at Jacksonville State University in Spring 2023. Carson
B. Gallman. of Braselton, was among those named to
the dean’s list.
To be named to the dean’s list, students must earn
a 3.5-3.99 GPA for the semester while completing at
least 12 GPA hours of course credit.
Wall makes dean’s
list at University of
the Cumberlands
University of the Cumberlands has announced the
students named to the dean’s list for the spring 2023
semester.
William Wall, of Hoschton, was among those hon
ored.
To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must be
enrolled in at least 12 credit hours (a full course load),
maintain a minimum term GPA of 3.50, and be in good
academic standing.
Phan makes dean’s list
at Worcester Polytechnic
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has an
nounced that Giai Phan, of Braselton, a member of the
class of 2025 majoring in mechanical engineering, was
named to the university’s dean’s list for academic ex
cellence for the spring 2023 semester.
A total of 2,054 undergraduate students achieved the
criteria required for WPI’s spring 2023 dean’s list. The
criteria for the WPI dean’s list differs from that of most
other universities as WPI does not compute a grade
point average (GPA). Instead, WPI defines the Dean’s
List by the amount of work completed at the A level in
courses and projects.
Area residents graduate
from Shorter University
Shorter University held its 2023 commencement exer
cises on Thursday, May 4, in the Winthrop-King Centre on
Shorter’s Rome campus.
Students who received their degrees during the 2022-
2023 academic year include:

in history education
• Javier Flores, of Jefferson, bachelor of business admin
istration in general business
•Lydia Christian Cosper, of Maysville, bachelor of mu
sic in music and worship leadership
Smith among UNG Sigma
Tau Delta students
to present in Denver
Ten members of the University of North Georgia (UNG)
Gainesville chapter of Sigma Tau Delta presented at the
honor society’s international convention in April, making
it the largest UNG group ever to do so. Michaela Smith, of
Hoschton, along with faculty mentor Dr. Diana Edelman,
presented “Villainizing Women in Stephen King’s Carrie.”
Smith, who is an executive officers for the Gainesville
chapter, provided “Encouraging Involvement on a Com
muter Campus” at the Chapter Share event, discussing ex
periences with the challenges and opportunities of student
involvement.
Sigma Tau Delta is the international English Honor So
ciety and has chapters at UNG’s Dahlonega and Gaines
ville campuses. The Dahlonega chapter has 30 members
and was formed in 1991. In 2014 Gainesville’s chapter
was formed and it currently has 47 members.
