For Woman’s Work.
When Knighthood
Was in Flower.
NO WORK ever issued from the press
w-th a more alluring title than the
oat .hat gives name to this article. It ap
pealed, on the instant, to every sentiment
ot the romantic and picturesque. It was
a microcosm of centuries. All that was
grave and gay, lofty and devoted, power
ful and pious, poetic and pathetic, brilliant
in achievement, and august in ceremonial
of the most pictorial phase in the history of
civilization, flashed before the “inner
eye,” at sight of Leigh Hunt’s line,“When
Knighthood Was in Flower.”
The atmosphere of peer, and paladin,
are not reproduced in the book, as we had
hoped, yet it possesses many claims on
public favor. It is written by a cheerful
man, a pure, high-souled American gentle
man, who can write with reverent appre
ciation of woman and marriage. The
great cry now is for “cheerful literature,”
and if the book in question has a fault it is
in complying too literally with this de
mand. “The deep, abiding tearfulness of
things,” is the chief factor in securing per
manent remembrance for books, and men,
and if this book shall obtain but transient
popularity, its too gay and jaunty spirit
may be fairly held responsible.
The mind of man being in its nature su
perior to the body, it cannot find complete
satisfaction in the limitations and imper
fections of material things. To bridge
over this discrepancy, there exists the
world of Art, which supplies the mind
with a more exact goodness, and a more
absolute variety than in the nature of
things can elsewhere be discerned. Hence
the painters, sculptors, novelists, artists of
every grade and type toiling tirelessly for
the edification of the race.
The ruling influence ot the universe sees
to it that no precious or profitable posses
sion of humanity shall be permitted to
perish: be it architecture, literature, or
lofty deed, it is not allowed to become ob
solete.
The cathedrals of England and France
were from neglect and inattention falling
into incipient decay, but Ruskin in Eng
land and Le Due in France, aroused, by
their enthusiasms, the public spirit to their
rescue. Lessing did the same thing for the
Greek language, and in many ways and
places, this fact is continually in evidence.
The historical novel is work in this di
rection, recalling to mind facts that de
serve to be kept in the popular conscious
ness. It preserves the continuity of hu
man progress, by linking it to the past.
It revives our interest and stimulates our
curiosity with regard to other times, and
makes plain the contrast between ours
and “the days that are no more.”
“When Knighthood Was in Flower,’’ is
written in a simple, lucid style, singularly
free from coarseness, although laid in a
coarse time and dealing with such men as
Henry Eighth and Francis First. It gives
the impression of a wholesome, cheery,
happy nature; too much so, perhaps, for
the one note of unreality in it is the lack
of that mood that hints at ‘‘The deep
abiding tearfulness of things.’’ Pain is
the deepest thing in human nature, and,
although the cry now is for cheerful liter
ature, the history of books proves that
those who have the longest hold on life are
those that have a certain admixture of fa
tality and death.
These elements are notably wanting in
the volume in question, and, for this very
reason, its tenure of popular favor may be
but temporary.
It may be said with equal truth that
love, and reverence for woman are treated
in a manner worthy a high-souled Ameri
can gentleman.
One feature of the historical novel is the
zest with which it sets you rummaging
among long discarded volumes, after the
actual truth of the facts upon which they
are based. After reading this book we
were impatient to discover what our “His
toire De France,” had to say of Louis and
Mary, and alter poring over meagre dt
taiis lurnithed by Anquetil, we mourned
for the fuller information we knew would
be furnished by Michelet.
Walter Scott’s novels gave to English
and Scottish history a charm they had else
never known; and what Scott did for
these, Dumas did for that of France. The
WOMAN’S WORK.
magic wand of the romances touches the
dry bones of history, and they live again
with a fuller, more abounding interest dur
ing life.
The “flower of Knighthood” which this
most delicately told love tale has recalled
to modern thought, overhung a social
state, cruel, coarse, and corrupt, rent and
racked by economic and political discord.
In a rude age, when body lorded it over
mind, and all sentiment was material, this
brilliant efflorescence stood for all that was
brave and pure, courageous and gentle,
pious and magnanimous.
Not in vain did this flower of Heaven
overhang the turbid and polluted waters
of mediaeval life, for from it high things
were mirrored in the hearts and souls of
its contemporaries, and it left to later gen
erations, deeds and memories that will
thrill the hearts of men till Time shall be
no more.
‘Their swords are rust,
Their bones are dust,
Their souls are with the saints. I trust.”

SPIRITUAL IMPROVEMENT.
THERE is much said and written, now
a-days, on improving the blood of
stock and fowls. Even the dog and the
cat have been improved by proper food
and especial training, until the old time
cur has gone out of date, and the grey tab
by is no longer a necessity. Every one
who has chickens must have Plymouth
Rocks, Buff Cochins, or some other fine
breed; The “speckled neck” hen is
“shoved” out of the barn yard. A “razor
backed” hog, a “plug’’ of a horse, a “runt”
of a cow, have actually gotten to be things
of the past.
The next question that seems to present
itself, is: What is the best method to im
prove the blood of the human family?
The five senses, the passions and appe
tites, are said to be seated in the blood of
man. All that is low and groveling arise
from these characteristics. The better
emotions and higher principles have their
origin in his spiritual nature. The conclu
sion is evident: A cultivation of the spir
itual will subdue the gross elements and
improve the blood of man. This can be
done by gaining a knowledge of God and
of man’s spirituality.
