There is a very good, old-fashioned
method of sweeping carpets with a broom
wet with warm salt water. It is the best
way yet known to brighten colors of the
carpet and thoroughly remove the layer of
dust that always settles after the heavy
sweeping is over.
A good way to remove paint that has
been spattered on a window pane is to
wet it with alcohol, a small portion at a
time if it is a large splash, then rub it with
the edge of a penny.
To clean marble, take one ounce of pot
ash, two ounces of whiting and a square of
yellow soap, cut into small pieces; boil all
together in a saucepan until it begins to
thicken; apply this with a large brush to
the marble. If the marble is very much
soiled, let it remain on all night; it not,
one hour will be sufficient. Then wash it
carefully off with plenty of cold water and
a sponge. Take care the mixture is not
applied too hot. This is an old and well
approved recipe.
The ordinary nervous headache will be
greatly relieved, and in many cases entire
ly cured, by removing the waist of one’s
dress, knotting the hair high upon the
head out of the way, and, while leaning over
a basin, placing a sponge soaked in water
as hot as it can be borne on the back of the
neck. Kepeat this many times, also ap
plying the sponge behind, the ears, and the
strained muscles and nerves that have
caused so much misery will be felt to relax
and smooth themselves out, and very fre
quently the pain promptly vanishes in
consequence.
Feed caged birds not only with seed, but
also lettuce, sorrel, plantain and celery
top.
Where closets are not properly venti
lated, and are hung with damp clothing—
clothing which is damp with perspira
tion—they are certainly very unwhole
some adjuncts to a sleeping room, but the
trouble is not so much in their use as in
their abuse. When clothing is taken off
the body and is not at once put in the
wash, it should be hung across a chair or
in some place where it will be open to the
air, and, if possible, to the sun. Not only
should every care be taken to avoid any
sources of dampness and mould in the
clothes closet, but the closet should be fre
quently ventilated, so that it will not have
the close, unpleasant odor such receptacles
so often have.
Have as inexpensive a lamp as your
purse demands, but let the burner be the
best in the market. Keep the gauze—or
fine holes—which admits air to the blaze,
perfectly free from dust, and for this pur
pose rub it every morning with a cloth
moistened with kerosene. When the
wheels lower and raise the wick with dif
ficulty, take out the latter and boil the
burner in washing soda and water; if this
does not remove the trouble, take it to a
repairer, although the chances are that
you will need a new one. In this case it
is important that it should exactly fit the
collar of the lamp.
When only a little light is required, do
not turn down the wick of a large lamp,
but use a small lamp with a correspond
ingly small wick. Very little less oil is
used when the blaze is turned low, for
what is not burned in the blaze passes off
in an ill-smelling gas, poisoning the air.
Physicians say that this way of using a
kerosene lamp is a frequent cause of diph
theria.
In the care of the bath room special at
tention should be given to the sponges.
A sponge should not only be washed to
cleanse it from the soapsuds and other
foreign substances, but afterwards it should
be exposed to the air. Let the sun shine
on it and the wind blow through it and it
will keep in a sweet and proper condition to
use. A basket is sometimes arranged in the
bath room where the sponges can dry, but
even better than that is to hang the basket
containing the sponges on a hook just out
ride the window, or even within the win
dow frame if it is for any purpose too ex
posed on the outside. A little care of this
kind will keep the sponges always clean.
Place a strip of oilcloth at each side of
the bed of a somnambulist. It is said that
the cold surface of the oilcloth will invari
ably awaken the sleeper.

WOMAN’S WORK.
If it is needed to bake potatoes hurriedly
the process may be considerably shortened
by putting them first in boiling salted water
for ten minutes; they are then taken out
and put into the oven, and will bake in a
very short time. The object is to heat
them through quickly, this process being
slowly accomplished if left to the oven
alone.
Put a little spermaceti, lard or kerosene
in the boiled starch, and borax in the cold,
and your linen will be both stiff and glossy.

Falling hair is sick hair.
It is hair that has lost its lustre, its
strength, its vitality.
The cause of its sickness is a parasite
that is destroying its root.
Just as the grub, working at the root
of your favorite plant, saps its life until
.it withers and dies, so can a parasite in
the hair-follicle rob your hair of its
nourishment until, for want of strength
and vitality, it comes out in your comb.
The work of the parasite is far more
destructive than that of the grub, for
while the latter simply kills the roots of
the one plant, the former not only de
stroys one hair root, but spreads from
hair to hair till it attacks all the hair
on your head, and your hair literally
comes out in combfuls. This parasite is
not visible to the naked eye, but under
a powerful microscope such hairs as are
attacked by it have the appearance of tele
graph poles loaded down with brush heaps.
This is no unusual sight at the Crani
tonic Institute. In fact, it is seen there
every day in the microscopical exami
nations of hair. But as people give lit
tle heed to dangers that are unseen, this
danger is often permitted to exist until the
continuous falling of the hair results
in premature baldness. Then, after the
damage has been done, after the mouths
of the starved and shriveled hair-follicles
have been closed by nature, when the
scalp is tightly drawn across the skull
and glistens like polished ivory, there is
a loud cry for help.
The cry comes 100 late.
There was a time when this bead of
hair could have been saved. It was
when the hair first began falling; when
the result of the daily toilet was a hand
ful of combings and the comb looked
like the one in the illustration shown
above—while there was still nourishment
in the scalp, and when all that was need
ed was a preparation that would destroy
the cause of the disease and assist nature
in repairing the damage already done.
Cranitonic Hair Food would have done
this.
Its germicidal qualities would have de
stroyed the parasite which caused the
falling hair; its nourishing qualities
would have aided nature in feeding the
impoverished and weakened hair-folli
cles back to health; its stimulating quali
ties would have toned up the nerves of
the scalp, and the result would have
been a renewed growth of strong,
