To the Queen on Her Visit to Ireland.
WELCOME, oh! Queen, to the fair land of Erin,
A thousand glad welcomes! this shall be my lay;
Neglected we have been in past times, and herein
Was just cause for envy, forgotten to-day.
Midst Scotia’s grim mountains thy palace is lying,
Where oft thou retirest to leave cares of state;
Has Erin no mountains with Scotia’s own vying?
To loyal hearts answer comes sooner or late.
Too seldom the sunshine of Royalty streaming
O’er highland glens finds its way over the sea,
And yet Erin cries, full of beauty past dreaming,
“Your princes and nobles come not unto me.”
“The land of the Saints,” this was once my proud title;
A nation of warriors, musicians of fame;
Where sweet legends linger, and poet’s recital
Os brave deeds of old, stir the blood to a flame.
Slieve Donard now answers to Mangerton calling;
Rostrevor the beauteous in fairy glen lies;
Sweet vale of Avoca, thy tears are now falling,
Yet happiness gleams in each fair beauty’s eyes.
The sweet bells of Shandon are joyfully ringing,
Our Sovereign has come at last over the sea;
The children of Erin are gleefully singing,
A thousand glad voices sound over the lea.
The pageant of Empire passes before us,
Our hearts are thy throne, this thou knowest I ween;
Ob! Empress beloved, we chant in one chorus,
His angels now guard thee, and “God save the Queen.”
From the Irish papers—April, 1900. Emra Holmes.
! COMMENT. :
♦ We Invite pou to Criticise This Issue. J
Dear Editress:—
Your Easter issue was a beautiful
magazine, and I want you to know that it
was greatly appreciated in our home. I
never fail to find a large fund of valuable
information, in addition to a great quanti
ty of very entertaining literary matter,
and the poetry in Woman’s Work is more
than charming. "Would that there were
many more home magazines of such high
character and useful nature as this, for
your efforts to impress lessons of unselfish
ness, of charity and of good common sense,
must necessarily result in great benefit
wherever they are known. I feel that every
present subscriber should make determined
efforts to “double your subscription list”
by inducing a friend or neighbor to take
it and thus extend its benefits to twice the
present number of readers.
Southern periodicals of a general liter
ary and home nature have often been com
menced only to die an early death, but
Woman’s Work has past the “dangers
of childhood” and has for many years
been a credit to our Southland. I have
intended to give some expression of ap
preciation all these months since my name
has been on your list, but I am just now
commanding the courage to make a “com
ment.” If we housewives would write
you all our experiences I am sure that
many practical suggestions would grow
out of them. May long life be yours and
may success and appreciation continue to
crown your efforts! Always your well
wisher, Mrs. R. L. R.
South Georgia.
Dear Editress:—
April Woman’s Work has a great
er variety of short articles and miscella
neous hints than usual, and I derived great
benefit from its helpful suggestions. I ex
pect to see you putting on all the style of
a high-price magazine in the near future,
but hope you will never give up the plan
of having a preponderance of household
articles, recipes, and other matter which
appeals directly to nearly all housekeep
ers. I hear much complaint of other mag
azines supposed to be run entirely regard
less of expenditures, because they devote
much space—almost their entire matter —
to so-called stories and literary features
which may offer very agreeable pastime,
but they do nothing toward making home
more attractive. I hope you will continue
to make our magazine indispensable in
every home where it is known.
Yours, T. N.
Dear Editress:—
I am so much enjoying the story
“Sweetie,” and will be glad when I can
finish it. It is such a sweet, pure, elevat
ing story, bo different .from many we find
WOMAN’S WORK.
nowadays; and it is written in a thorough
ly easy and natural style.
I find the recipes and household hints
very useful. One might soon have a val
uable collection of each by preserving
copies of Woman’s Work, and 1 certainly
intend doing this.
I suppose the puzzlers enjoy “Nutcrack
ers’ Corner,” but it seems almost like so
much Greek to me. But we must not ex
pect everything in a family magazine to
please each of us, for of course this would
be impossible, with so many differing
tastes to be consulted.
Wishing you success, I am,
Your friend,
Mrs. A. E. B.
Dear Woman’s Work:—
I desire to thank one of your con
tributors for the “Snowdrift Pudding” rec
ipe in your April number. I have tried it
twice this week and it is a very delightful
dessert; easily made, wholesome, economi
cal and enjoyable. It is wonderful how a
useful domestic magazine may add to the
comfort and happiness of a home by in
troducing new ideas, new methods, and
furnishing enjoyable entertainment for
persons of all tastes and inclinations.
Each one of us can do something toward
helping others if we will only try. The
“Snowdrift” recipe has been a help to
me, and my husband says I may subscribe
for your magazine as long as he lives. His
special interest is in your culinary depart
ment, and I am free to add that a large
part of my own interest is also there. We
are all fond of good cooking, and all of us
should be able to have this without going
out to visit some of our “country kin” or
having to hire everything done. I am
proud of my domestic experiences, and
am not ashamed to subscribe myself
