Baked ham is an agreeable sub
stitute for fried ham, with its con
tinuous performance of sputter and
spatter. Cut in slices as for frying,
then place in the oven to bake for
half an hour. It is more delicate
and savory than when cooked on top
of the stove.
Most people at some time in their
lives probably have risen early
enough to experience the bracing
effect given by tilling the lungs while
dew is still on the grass. Dew Is
vitalizing not entirely because it is
water, but because it possesses an
Invigorating action due partly, at
any rate, to the fact that it is satu
rated with oxygen, and it has been
stated that during its formation
peroxide of hydrogen and some ozone
are developed. It is not improbable
that the peculiarly attractive and
refreshing quality which marks the
early morning air has its origin in
this way. Certain it is that the
bracing property of the early morn
ing air wears off as the day advan
ces, and it is easy to conceive that
this loss of freshness is due to the
oxygen, ozone or peroxide of hydro
gen (whichever it may be) being
used up.
With the open house day and
night, the morning and evening
sponging, the thin, light clothing,
little or no meat, and a diet of fresh
fruit, fresh vegetables and pure
milk, delicate women and men may
pass through a summer in town at
their usual toil, and show a physical
balance to the good at the end of it.
A careful housewife has discover
ed that common salt sprinkled over
any object that is stained with lamp
black will remove the dirt if rubbed
in and then removed. Several ap
plications may be necessary.
The secret of boiling water is just
thjs: Always use fresh water, and
let the kettle be warm before the
cold, sparkling fluid is put into it.
The fire should be quick, so that the
water will boil at once, and the
water should be removed from the
fire the instant boiling point is
reached, and poured upon the coffee
or tea immediately. So many peo
ple make the mistake of permitting
the kettle to remain over the fire,
where the water steams and sim
mers away, wasting the good water
in vapor. Those who drink hot
water before breakfast should insist
on the use of fresh water, and have
it served quickly after boiling. Phy
sicians say, that to kill germs in
suspicious water, boiling should last
about five minutes.
A good bread box is of tin lined
with porcelain. It is claimed that
bread will not mould in it. Bread
should never be put into any kind
of box while hot, and the cloth in
which it is wrapped should be per
fectly fresh and dry.
A refined way to mark linen hand
kerchiefs is to first write on paper
your initials in your own penman
ship. Let the strokes be distinct
and void of flourishes. Over these
place the corner of the handkerchief,
and transfer the letters on it with a
pencil, then outline them with fine
white embroidery cotton.
’Tls said that one of the best reme
dies for an aching tooth is tincture
of benzoin on a bit of cotton and
inserted in the tooth, if there is a
cavity large enough to put it in. The
relief is almost immediate and the
remedy pleasant and cheap, as ten
cents’ worth of benzoin will last a
long time.
A veteran physician declares that
he owes a great measure of his
health to the eating of one, two or
three apples at bedtime —really, al
most his chief meal of the day, for
Woman’s Work.
he is the slenderest of eaters at all
other times. A New York physician
says it is an excellent brain food,
because it contains more phosphoric
acid in easily digestible shape than
any other fruit known. It excites the
action of the liver, promotes sound
and healthy sleep, and thoroughly
disinfects the mouth. This is not all.
The apple agglutinates the surplus
acids of the stomach, helps the kid
ney secretions, and prevents calculous
growths, while it obviates indiges
tion and is one of the best preven
tives known of diseases of the throat.
It is important that every person
drink at least several pints of water
a day, and it is essy to imagine, if
the water is impure, the amount of
poison that one may take within
twenty-four hours. Water probably
receives as little attention as any
thing about the house. Pure water
is one of the first necessities for
health, and one which no house
holder should for a moment think
of holding as a secondary considera
tion.
Potatoes should always be put to
cook in boiling water, as cold or
tepid water soaks the potato, taking
out its starch and giving it a soggv
appearance, and, as it heats it fails
apart.
If you wish to be economical,
never buy ahead of the season. For
instance, the first strawberries may
cost fifty cents, and are never so
good and sweet as they are later on,
when they, may sometimes be only
ten cents per box. This is true all
through the year. Some housekeep
ers make a practice of ordering early
vegetables in January and February,
paying an extra price for those that
are then almost stale from long ship
ment, and when the home crop is
ready fresh and crisp, the family are
tired of the vegetables and will not
eat them.
Don’t clean hair brushes with
soda. It discolors the bristles if they
are white. Dampen the bristles,
sprinkle a few drops of ammonia on
them, and clean by rubbing the two
together. Rinse in cold water. If
only one brush is to be cleaned, use
a comb to distribute the ammonia
water, and rinse always without im
mersing the backs, and in cold water
to keep the bristles stiff.
Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local applications, as they cannot reach
the diseased portion of the oar. There is
only one way to cure Deafness, and that is
by constitutional remedies. Deafness is
caused by an inflamed condition of the
mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube.
When this tube gets inflamed you have a
rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and
when it is entirely closed Deafness is the
result, and unless the inflammation can be
taken out and this tube restored to its nor
mal condition, hearing will be destroyed
forever; nine cases out of ten are caused
by catarrh, which is nothing but an in
flamed condition of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for
any case of Deafness (caused by Catarrh)
lhatcannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Care.
