Let monied blockheads roll in wealth,
Let proud fools strut in state—
My hands, my homestead, and my wealth
Place me above the great.
I never fawn, nor fib, nor fain,
To please old Mammon’s fry ;
But to independence still maintain
Oi all beneath the sky.
Thus Cincinnatus at Lis plough
With more than glory shone,
Than ( aesar with his laurelled brow,
ILs palace and bis throne.
Tumult, perplexity, and care,
Are bold ambition’s lot;
But thr se intruders never dare
Disturb my humble cot.
Blest with fair competence, I find
A’.'hat monarch’s never can—
Health and tranquility of mind,
Heaven’s choicest gift to man.

BREAKING A HILL-SCENE IN COURT.
Judge— Was you acquainted with eld Mr-

Witness—Rather guess I was.

W.— May be I does.
J. What do you know?
W —Uhy, they do say it was a plagucy
ugley one.
J.—l mean Lis last will and testament.
" —Don’t know nothing about that. Ne
ver heard ihe old man had any will for reedin

J. —I do net refer to his disposition, but to
Ins division of property.
—Well, I did learn that he mop’d off his

Blasting Rocks with a streak o’ Lightning.
A London paper of recent date, mentions
an instance which lately occured in Prussia,
where, in order to get rid of an cnoutmotis
rock, and to avoid ihe ordinary expense of the
under'akmg, a deep hole was bored into the
rock, in'o whmh was fixed a bar of iron twen
ty eight feet high, for the purpose of attracting
I lightning. After which, it is stated, on the
first thunder storm, the rnck was shattered
,in o fragments. \\ e calculate this is making
i use of the lightning and beating Jonathiiu with
a vengeance’ How easily all the snare rocks
in Jersey may now be disposed of!
! A Discovery. —On I uesday, the carpenters
employed m repairing and shingling the roof
of the house on the corner el Salem and Cat'
'er sin es, threw out from (he garre t a parcel
of tubl'ish, amongst which was an old shoe,
which was found by two lads, Wm. Knowles
and Bitter, who were playing in the
strei t, -md kicking the shoe about for amuse
ment, whoii a wadding of rags was shaken out,
and was followed |>y a roll of bank notes,
-imu'intmg to $9,000 —of the Charleston, N.
Oilcans and 1 roy Banks. They have been
pronounced counteifeit, by the Brokers.

7he Clear Grit. Young Durivage, iho
comic rtctor, writes and speaks as good Yankee
as any man on tbe stage. He headed his
bent fit bill at B-mgor, with the following cute
phrase :
“Our folks want to know, if your folks ’ll
come down to-night to see our folks, and fetch
all your folks along ? All ihe fellers must put
on their yellerest vests and stiffest shirt collars
and Ie ch ail ihe gals, and I’ll bet a hunk of
giugt-rbre id agin a goh of ’lasses candy that
you’ll have a bunkum time !’’
Good Sentiment.— 'i’he Boston Pearl says
ihai piojim language is to conversation what
ten an h yp kts would be to veneering—split
ting, shivi rmg, aud tlclar mg it. It is in bad
t-ibte, offensive to a majority, and gratifying
to no no.
