Mr. Edil ■ . Allow mo to com-:
municatc to the public through your
columns, sum ' particulars of a won-j
derful case jf magaetical soinnambu- '
lism, which has occured in the village i
of Pawtucket, under my own opera
tion. lam going in the first place
to relate the bare facts, as they could
be seen by every one present; i
'shall afterwards make a few remarks
to show the great philosophical im-
portance of those facts.
The subject of these experiments |
is a young lady well known in this
place, where she lias been residing
for over ten years. '1 here is but
one opinion concerning her charac
ter; that she is surpassed by no one
i ) purity of mind, disinterestedness, j
laborious habits, arid religious dispo
sition. But alas! in this “valley of
tears’’ and hard trials, called the,
earth happiness is not frequently in
proportion with virtue! bliss Cyn
thia Gleason has been for eight or,
nine years laboring under a compli
cated nervous and functional disease,
which baffled all the skill of physi
cians. It would be too long, and
perhaps insignificant, to describe
here the various symptoms of this
complaint. 1 will say only that, in
consequence of it, the sleep ol the
patient had become difficult, short,
very much troubled by pains, and
always followed with a dullness of
the mind, heaviness of the system,
for several hours awkaing.
I need not say that 1 was a per
fect stranges to Miss Gleason, and
that she was, for her pai l entirely
ignorant even of the words a lirnai
magnetism, when she heard it for the
first time, by her attendant physi
cian, the respectable Dr. .Manches
ter, of Pawtucket. 'Phis gentleman
proposed to her to try an experi
ment with the hope that she might
receive benefit from it. She very
cheerfully agreed; and in conse
quence 1 was brought to her lodging
by Manchester, on Sunday 51 h hits,
at half past four o'clocks in the al
tern )on. 1 must state here, that I
was very much pleaded to find her
perfectly calm had sober. I have
acquired since the fust visit the hili
conviction that she is one of those
persons upon whom ‘imagination
has very little empire.’ Miss (dea
son told us, among other things, ih.it
she had not much faith in animal
magnetism, and that she would *'dejy
anj one lo put her to sleep in lies
manner? I observed to her that I
did not think myself that 1 co’.il I p it
tier to sleep at the first trial, as 1 in
tended to magnetise her only Io or
20 minutes, with the view of estab
tween us; her pulse taken by Dr.
Manchester; gave S1 pulsations pei
minute before the operation. 1 com-1
mcnced and in 25 minutes, we per
ceived that her eyes grew di n and
lids fell heavily down—m 39 min
utes she was profoundly asleep
pulse gave 9 1 pulsation ;. We tried
her sense in every possible ma.mer;
nothing could disturb her; the sleep
lastc-' half an hour; 1 caused it to
cease bv a few gestures with nn
hand at several inches distance from
her face.
The next day, I resorted again to
the patient’s house, at a quart, r be
torc I in the afternoon, together
with Dr. Gardner and E. V» .i'.cj t.
Esq. Miss Gh 'ason told us th it slit*
had slept very well all the night, an !
tclt better than usual he opera
lions commenced at 1 o'clock, ex
actly,—and although tiic patient, ac
cording t) her own avowal, tried to
keep awake, she was fast asleep in
ten minutes, (in the next dav the
number of her was still
greater. Sleep was produced in
7 l-2minutes; on Wednesday in (>
minutes the desiried oiled was o -
tained.
As the patient had already expe
rienced some benefit by these op. -
rations she manifested to u> the de
sire of being magnetised once in pub
lic, in order, as she, said to eoavim o
the unbelievers, and establish a !•:;‘ i
so impoitant to religion X. t ie h a
of mankind. 1 must also state, a
another proof of the q’iditie> o b -r
heart, that she took tins r solution
for my re jida' isa!.e, viz: to prove ■
thru i aa. uota.i if lousier, and that
c.bors i mdly -s c m >:■=' e ■-

tained. .o, '
I’hero coii-
I suited all my friends about it, and
; received their unanimous appro'oa-{
tion, 1 concluded to accept bliss
Gleason’s proposal. The intended >
experiment took place on ! husday
last at the Pawtucket Hotel, before
■an audience of 170 persons, compii

the clergv of the village.
I com.mmced operating at a quar
ter before 8 o’clock. In the course
of 4 minutes, the patient shut her
eves; th m I got up ami suddenth
thrust with my foot against the floor,
the chair upon which I was sitting:
no sensible effect was produced by
this noise. Finally, m five mmute-,
the ladv appearing profoundly asleep
1 left h aid com u.meed my lec
• ture, win lasted nearly three quar
, ters of an hour, and was listened to
’ with much interest. Lis" Gleason
j continued sleeping during that length
of time. When the lecture was ov r.
jwe resume;! our experiments. We
pinched her pricked her with a
pin tickled her lips, nostrils and
eyelids with a bit of paper; no sen
sation was manifested. A gentle
man put his mouth close to her ear,
ami asked her in a very loud voice,
if she was not tired of sleeping, an i
wished to get up? She remained
perfectly deaf to the sound oi this
loud voice; another man whistled in
a most shrilling maimer and clapped
his hands; but all the disturbance
was without effect upon her.
Hartshorn was held suddenly un
der her nose, for some mo Rents, ami
though .she mast have inspired the
.strong (hiluwa, no sign of uni! nai
sensation was manif sted. Several
persons ..poke to her in succession,
and siie took no notice oi what they
said. 1 hen I stoo lat the distance
of a few feet irom her, and in ntailv
requested her, without touching her,
to give ine her h md, and she imme
