been ca’led—and to bring the Government
again t> o >he embraces of that repudiated
nus'ress.
Fourth— We have the State Rights
Party, composed, as our readers are aware,
of G.e advocates of the old R<-pubhcan princi
ples of 1798. They are, with -ome exceptions,
opposed alike to any conmc ion with a N i
tional Bank »r the State Bank or, according
lo Mr. Webster’s metaphor, to ihi “BIG boi
lER,” or the ‘‘LITTLE boilers.” They are,
of course, in f<vor of separating the Govern
ment fr>m ih- B;Aks but opposed to the
project oi an exclusive metahc currency.
A d wh it, the render will inquire, is to be lhe
re.-uh of the conflict between these vanoub
inti rests? Wtiat the combination by which
action is to be had or defeated? These are
puzzling questions—md we feel incompetent
to give any satisfactory answer. We venture
Conjectures merely.
First.— I’he divorcement being the main
poo in issue between the two largest divisions
the tdtmnis ration party proper, and the
Nm-nd Republicans—both are driven to
seek assistance liom the two smaller. It is
of toe last importance to the Nationals to de
feat lhe proposition to divorce—for should
that succeed, their hopes of a National Bank
are gone forever. i'hey will, therefore, natu
rally desne to use the “Conservatives” to
defea the project —well knowing, that if suc
cessful in this, they will find no difficulty in
giu.ing rid o| tin f’< t Bmk Sis'etn. By this
movement they hope to defeat .ill ac'ion du- ■
ring the present session, leaving lhe country !
in such a state as lo induce tne people to seek 1
shelter under lhe wings of a Na ioual Bank.
I tie position <>l the “Conservatives” is, ilieie
fore, one of ihe gr alesi delicacy and respon
sibility Il they unite with the Nationals to
defeat the plans of their former associates,
they will noi only be held answerable for the
failure io adopt measures of relief for the
country —but be al-o justly chargeable with!
contributing, to the establish
ment <>l a National Bank. They will, in f>ct,
be regarded as having gone over to the Na
tion I R< publican p iriy.
Second.— But if lhe d<voice bill be ilnis de
feated by a coalition between ihe Nationals
and Conservatives, what corn iinatiotts wdl
ensue? Will the Administration panv proper
unite wiiii their q >a .dam asso< tales, the Con
servatives and go for the second trial of lhe
experiment?—ut will they remain imidf rent &
let the new coalition t ike the responsibility ?
We incline lo believe die lat'i r will be the
result. In si.ch < use we should not be sur
prised il die Nationals desert lheir m w friends;
and h iving used Inein <<• defeat the divorce
ment, leave them to eoj y du n scars m peace.
'1 he whole responsibility will oe thus thrown
on the shonldi'is of the Cotvervatives—and I
they w II have io bear die bind n of the pop
ular curse, for hiving' al one and the same
time, defeated all me .sur. k of present relief
and prepaied the way lor the incorporation of
a Na'ional B ink. 1 lien posiii n is, tiier Ire

THE CHEROKEE COUNTRY.
We publish in to-days paper a veiy interes
ting t.otter from (be iiev, S. K. I ai.mdge, to
the Editor of ihe Chronicle & Sentinel ol Au
gusta, m relation to Ibis Country. His des
cription of its climate, its soil and scenery is
by no means over rough!. Mr. Featlicrsion
haugh, the U. S, Geologist, who spent a few
days in lhe gold region of Georgia lasi sum
mer, pronounced our mountain climate to be
equal to that of Italy, and our mineral resour
ces unsurpassed by any he had examined in
the United States or Europe. He wdl visit
this Country again in the eat ly D irt of the next
year, when the public may expect much useful
information from his pen upon a science but
bide un lerstood by those immediately inter
ested in the devel 'pement of our .Mineral ie
sources, ioe line white st ituaiy marble quar
ry on Long Swamp, was discovered several
ve ir- ano, yet its value was unknown until he
Commumcaied the fact to Congiess in Ins late
report. We give die remarks of the Augusto
Constitutionalist upon this subject, and hope it
w ill excite our < itizens and all who are inter
ested m the minerals or soil of the Chen keee
country, to a prai-e wort iv enterprize, fiom
which we if milt not, valuable and astonishing
develoneinents will be mule in the m.neral
kingdom of a country but little known and
much less appreciated.
INTERESTING TO SCI I.PTORS.
Il is stated oi Hie National Intelligencer,
that Mr. Feathersti tilimigh, United Stales
Geologist, has ascertained the extstance of
some iinpoitant deposites of white stn uary
marble, m the ( herokee country. He lias
followed an obscure r dge in the mountains six
miles, consisting entiic Iv ol (hat valuable sub
stance, lu herto only seen tn the Untied Stales
in thin beds, not t xceeding a few inches. He
reports one ot these deposites as equal to that
of Mass* Carrara in Italy, with which he is
t unilt t. Mar >!u of this kind has been tilth
»uto brought, at a great expense, fiom Italy.
The block lor the St Hue of Hamilton, des

less i han $2,000.
Col Slierbmcne of Washing’on City, who
ha- been for some weeks past in ihe Cherokee
Nation on business for government, has, we
have been informed, contracted with the owner
lor the purchase of the land on which this
valuable and beautiful statuary marble was
discovered by the celebrated Geologist above
named. It is thought lo be inexhaustible and
m< re valuable than any gold mine yet disco
vered in the Cherokee Nation, being of that
cast as not only to command a good price, but
will be iu very groat demand. The quarry is
within seven miles of navigable water, and
there is a never failing stream within <mc
hundred yards, that will cany one thousand
saws ii found necessary.
