ning, Jennings, and at this post. Jennings is the name of the new Fort erected upon the Walker Sassee, by the Blue Fox, instead cf that of “Georgia,” as given in my last. This was the name of the man who was killed on the 26th December, 'i’he Indians whom we captured on the eleventh inst. say that we kil led fifteen of their men on the 26th, instead of thirteen, as stated in my last. Since I commenced writing, (ten o clock P. M.) by torch light on my knees, an express which was started for Fort Jennings has re turned, and report that they (two being in company) saw some 40 cr 50 Indians ten miles oIF, which caused them to return to this place without going on. They are to be relied upon it is said. The old Blue Fox is now ma king preparations for pursuing them by day light in the morning. 1 trust that we may have our usual success. '1 he “mountain sprouts are fighting boys right sure.” We have only part of the first and second regt merits now here —part with the battallion, was sent on to Tarnpay Bay shortly after we arri ved at Suwannee Old-fields. Nelson, (Blue Fox) is a most untiring, energetic officer. Yours, &c. A VOLUNTEER. P. S. I open to say to you, that the Indian ' taken by us on the eleventh, and lodged, to gethcr with the women and children, with , Capt. Beck of Rabun County, for safe keep-j jngat Fort Fanning, until a boat should ar- i rive to convey them on to lam pa Bay, has ; liroke from the guard and made his escape! | Two muskets it is said were fired at him, as he run, without taking effect. From the Macon Telegraph. FROM NELSON’S BRIGADE. Extract»®fa letter received in this city, dated Fortt Fanning, £. F. Jan, 23. 'Gun. Charles Nelson and his command had a hard fight on the 2d instant, in V.acassy swamp, near this place, which lasted from two until 5 o’clock. Ibe volunteers fought brave ly. The number of Indians in the fight was ■about two hundred. One ChicUnamcd Chick uchoo, and fifteen men and children were ta ken prisoners. The right wing of the army was commanded by Gen. Nelson, the left by •(Joi. Foster —both fought like bull dogs. 'l’he following is a list of live killed and wounded: Killed, Lieut. Jennings. Wound ed, Col. Foster, slighily; Col. Ambrister, <lo.; ■serj. maj. Jones, badly; assistant surgeon. Mo ses Sheliall of Savannah, badly; privates Po sey and Mosely, slightly, privates Dumb and •Glass, badly. When Col Foster was shot down, foi refus r*d to leave the ground. When Dr. Sbeftall aViis wounded, he ordered the men to leave him. Your#;, Capt. JAMES SMITH. FLORIDA. 'l’he Tullahassee papers arc loud in their : complaints against the commanding officer in the Territory, for leaving the Middle District unprotected. A ol the citizens of Tallahassee was held oYi the 23d inst. and a committee apipowm <1 to apprise G'en. Jesup slid the Secretary of War of their aefenc'cdess condition. 'J'hu Floridian holds the iloJlowvnig language: 'l'he present skirntiw-»f rtur frontier calls immediate andefficwirt effort for its protection. 'l’enthousvMcl troops, oppmefl-to drte fifth of their Muixbcr «vs savaged, are posted, no one knows where, in the nation, whilst the border set. <lements lie undefended and exposed to the ' inaradding bands of the foe, without an arm To ' be raised in the delence. Upon the arrival ol j Gen. Nilson with his regiment ol’ Georgians, t (tenoral Jesup, on receiving them into service, ? declared to the Governor his inteution of employing llretii in defending .the froufo r, , considering the Ibrco ulioady in tbe field siutlieient to operate successfully rigiinst the Indians. With the <pros|it*ct of such a force the Executive remained satisfied, and our population eontompluted a res- i pile from the toils ol theoamp mid a qniet and peaceful winter so the enjoyment of their j homes. But thoir fancied security was of short duratios. The next intelligence of their foci came mingled with the groans of their neigh bors, murdered amidst the ashes of their dwel tings. t The promised guard, when most needed, are beyond the reach off he sufferers and for aught ; we yet know, are in the heart of the Peninsu- > la. What is to be done? We have either to i leave our brethren wholly unprotected—to trust to the uncertain and (us it has already! proved) fatal reliance upon tho Government troops, or raise a*id organize a sufficient ferev for self-defence. If any expedient can be de vised tonvoid a draft, we hope it will be dis- ! penaed with. In common with every citizen, ■ we deprecate another resort to this means «rs providing for the defence. It hna hitherto ' drained our population, diminished thcproduc •tions of the country, und cost the It «es of ma- ; ny ot our citizens. But whilst we protest a gainst it, we are compelled to admit it is, per haps, the only rtMaurre to meet the present e tnergency, Fifty Indians in the present state -of the country, might attack the seat of Gar ernmenl, disperse the Legislative council and court of Appeals, fire the city and escape with ; impunity. FLORIDA. The bill calling a Convention for the pur- i pose of organising a State Government in Flo rid.t, has pass d the Legislature and become a law. The Convention is to meet at the city St Jos-ph on the Ist day of December next. In eomk-q ( ,-.ic - oft he seq lent r<; r:iti»m of Steamboat explosion* on the Western watcis, many ot the scalded suffer era bv w hich div for : want of timely assistance, the Editor of the Cincinnati Express, publishes the following prescription for scalds and burns. Mix lime water and sweet oil together, and apply the liquid with a feather or soft rag to ! the wound. The lime water and oil will form : in the proper proportions a wlrite mixture rath er thicker than cream, and should be stirred ' till they become of this consistence. Under . the application, the pain of the severest burn i instantly subsides, and if duly renewed it is an I effectual cure. This application is notgener . ally known, and as we have seen its efficiency frequently tested, can recommend it as the spediest and safest that can be used.
