energetic commanders ol the present day. We move with the rapidity of light, unincum bered troops, through mud, mires, and ham mocks, carrying with us from five to six days rations for both man and horse; and yet the men generally enjoy most excellent health — having lost only four men during the cam paign. Our course is never impeded on ac s* count of waters in the way, unless wagons arc in the train. Our course is onward. My former opinions of this part ol the Ter ritory respecting the sterrility and worthless ness of the lands, have undergone some con siderable change in its favor. I saw during my last scout, lands as fine as any in the vicin ity and adjoining counties ol lallahasscc 01 that section, if not better; there arc some fine, very fine lands in Warhoo Hammocks, and al so in the Anurthallaggco, as well as in Little Tallahassee south of the Withlacoochcc River. A VOLUNTEER. t GEN. SCOTT. We arc disposed to place little or no reliance in the report of this distinguished officer’s death, as the New York slips of the 9th ; (Friday last) are silent on the subject. We deeply regret to learn (says the Balti more American ofthc 10th inst.) from passen gers who arrived last night from Washington . by the rail road, that official intelligence ofthc death of General Scott, was received yesterday at the war department. The Baltimore Chronicle of the same date says:—“We are still inclined to disbelieve the report of Gen. Scott’s death, which has reach ed Washington.” 'The Washington corres pondent of the Augusta Chronicle writes (March 8.) “A letter has been received to day at the department of war from Quccnstoii, informing the secretary that information had reached that place by an endorsement on a let ter from Lewiston, that “Gen. Scott had been killed by one of his own men, accidentally.” 'This intelligence, vague as it is, has cast a general gloom over the numerous friends here ofihat gallant, officer. Hopes are entertained that the report is incorrect. 1 have just con versed with a distinguished southern senator who saw Gen. Ma< omb. 'That officer and Gen. Towson discredit the report. At the same time ’.he fact that the intelligence has come by the most direct route leaves us in great anxiety. The mail of this evening will confirm or refute the intelligence.”— Georgian. GuoLoin'An Survey.—Our readers are probably aware that a Geological Survey of the Stale, is now in progress; we are r< min ded, to bring before our readers a few of the praciical results which the labors of Pro fessor Cihtivg (who has undertaken this ar duous task.) have brought to light. Ti e first s •ction line < \tendi <1 from the mouth of the Savannah, Io the Northern boundary line of the State. On that fine large beds of mill have been discovered, and it needs only .a little enterprise to convert this discovery to valuable tigricultuial purposes. The quali ties of mail ns an addi imt t > •eitam kinds of r, >il is well known. In FJbert county a large quantify of Plumbago, Graphite’, or Black lead has been discovered. 'Phis mineral is of vast use in the arts; it is the substance ol which the /end for pencils is composed; .and until lately we believe, nearly all of this min is.d used mt this.side of the Atlantic was im. ported from the Black lead mines of b'uropc. recently a large and apparently inexhaustible led of this mineral has been found in North Carolina, and now ti valuable mine of this sub .lance- is discovered within the limits of our own State* The European Black lead mines, we have seen it stated, are wrought j out and the supplies are now very scarce. ! The difficulty experienced in effecting a re- I survey of old iim s is well known to many of our readers. This has been caused Ly the 100 e and uncertain manner in which the mag netic variation lias been computed. In the course of the survey of the first section line, Professor Cot ling has accurately ascertained the magm iic variations at several points. In leu comities cut by this line, the needle va lies to every point between I deg. 33 m. E. and 5 deg. 9m. E* It is a remarkable fact that the variation is greatest in Lincoln, ami least iu Elbert, and they arc adjacent coun ties ’— Georgia Journal. Till'. LONDON EIRE. the walls of the Royal Exchange, in fill ing, curried away with them the numerous sta tues ofthc Kings and Queens who have reign ed in England from the time of William the I Conqueror. This is a national loss. A Lon. •lon paper says: “Wo arc happy in being ena bled to state, that the whole ofthc papers and memoranda connected with the polices and in surance effected at Lloyd’s during the last year have been saved; the underwriter's draw ers in the different tables have been secured and deposited in Bartholemew’s church, and the Bank of England, where they are kept till claimed by their respective owners. So great was the anxiety to rescue every scrap of pa per, and evorv species, from the destructive el ement, that Bank of England notes to the a mciml ol 100 or 500 pounds were, this morn mi.'. found openly lying on a chest in St. Bar thoknnt w's Church, which had been there du ring tlm whole oi the night, although hundreds of persons have been engaged in depositing property there during the tire. “The Koval Exchange is stated to be insur ed for HS,(H»O pounds in one establishment. It is said the budding cannot be replaced for less than 150.000. One account says: “The safe ty vaults under the exchange which are now covered with immense heaps ot ruins, and which contain the account broks and other va luable property belonging to the London ban kers, it was hoped had escaped damage, but, unfortunately, w© learn that there was not less than four feet of water in them, which was be ing pumped out as fast as circumstances would permit.’ ” — Constitutionalist. From the Houston Telegraph Feb. 17. The cotton crop of Texas the last year amounts to about 50,000 bales. This accor ding to the present prices is worth about 2,- 000,000 dollars, which may be considered as the whole amount of the exports of the coun try. Our market is now quite well stocked with provisions and merchandise of all descriptions. There have been recently so many arrivals of vessels with assorted cargoes from different sections of the United States, that the prices of most articles of groceries and dry goods have fallen 20 or 30 per cent during the last week. The weather during the present month has been excessively cold. The mercury of Fah renheit’s thermometer stood sixteen degrees below the freezing point, on the morning of the 2d inst., and at 22 degrees below it yes terday morning. We were also on Thursday evening visited by a slight snow storm, a phe nomenon seldom witnessed in this part of the country. Apprentices in the Navy. We believe it is not generally known among parents and guar dians, (says the U. States Gazette,) that by a law of Congress in 1836, apprentices are ta ken into our navy to serve until they are 21 years old. They arc taught reading, writing, arithmetic, navigation, and the art of seaman ship, and are well clothed. After serving out the lime of their indenture, they will be pro moted to the situation us gunners, gunners’ mates, quarter gunners, quarter masters, and other situations of respectability on board ship according to their merits. ’This is one step towards increasing the number of native born seamen for our navy, and it will be the means of giving employment to hundreds of boys that might otherwise be brought up in idleness, wfiich often leads to disgrace and ruin. We would be glad to see a law of Congress requi ring our mercantile marine to carry apprenti ces. It certainly would not be objected to on the part of our merchants, whose slrps arc now filled with foreign seamen, of every coun try, who cannot feel that interest in the welfare of the ship and cargo, that would be felt by our own hardy sons ofthc ocean.
