PROGRESS OF 'l’l IE WEST. The value of the agricultural products which annually dcseu.i I the river Mississippi, is estimated at seventy millions of dollars. It appears from official documents that the val ue of the property annually transported on the Erie Canal of New York is sixty-seven ■ millions of dollars, pay ing in tolls to the stale treasury 81,614,000; but we presume this amount comprehends the value oi all the goods ■transported each wav. In the V'*r 1798, when an atn issment was 'made with a view to the levying ol direct taxes by the general government, the proper ty west of the Alleghany tnonniains in states nnd torritoiies of the American union, was valued at only twenty-six millions; the same district is estimated at the present day to con tain property of the value ot twelve hand red millions. The state of Indiana has 0000 men at work on her rail ways and canals. The work is in ternal improvement, already’ begun and pro <:ccdingnrmrwrHw- —with unexampled rapidity, in the states of Ohio Inrttarrr, H+i nois and Michigan, will emit forty eight mill ions w hen finished; n wonderful nniount, il we reflect on the recent settlement of that part of the union, nnd the comparatively feeble num her of the inhabitants. —A'rv Orleans Hee. From the New Orleans Bee. SILK CULTURE. Wo feel much indebted to the intelligent rtnd friendly author of the following cOmniuni. lion, for the timely information it corivdys. H his opinion ns to the adaptation ol the soil ol •• ihe Florida parishes to the growth of the mul-1 berry tree, prove to be correct, much of the . barren land in tint part of the .State will lie J brought under profitable cultivation. Mr. Editor:—Your recent milieus of this ; branch of agriculture have given much grusi fication. The northern people are boasting, that with silk, they will in a short time l<e able to compete with the southern cotton planter. But they calculate too fast. In the parish of St. Tnmmnny, Cnpt. Bagley, Mr. McDonald nnd Mr. Walker, have large stocks of the mo rtis mullicaulis mulberry’ tree. They have grown the tree ten feet from cuttings in a sea son, with an abundance of foliage. A large quantity of trees have been engaged in the above parish for the Philadelphia market,— The soil seems expressly adapted toll; with out manure or atty extra attention, a single Cutting produces a tree 10 feet high, with nu merous branches Ij to 2 inches diameter.— The trees will continue growing till Novcm.l her. The climate is all that one could wish, mild, perfectly healthy, nnd good spring wa ter. If silk be destined to go ahead of cot. ton, the south is destined to furnish the raw material and the north to manufacture it.— Our fellow citizen, It. Murigny, Esq. has a fine situation, nnd suitable force over tho lake to make a most extensive silk plantation. A Friend to Louisiana. P. S, One of tho trees will make fifty cut tings. Extract of n letter to the Editor of the Charleston Courier, from Edisto Island, dated 4th October, 1838. “In my last letter to you, I stated that this Islaad would average more Colton to the acre than it did last year. 1 feel no hesitation now* in withdrawing that opinion, and declaring that, as •mall as the crop was of the past year, that the present will not exceed it. I planted 240 acres, ancThave gathered 24 bales (300 pounds each,) and ha who expects more than un equal quantity to that already housed, is indulging a hope that will surely disappoint him. It is the opinion of all with whom I have conversed, that the average product will not bo more than 75 pounds per acre. I know our friends, the buyers are very slow ol belief in o»t statements concerning the grow, ing crop, but 1 can discover neither policy or scuse in an attempt to deceive?* i Mexico Eoiri’fi’AN CottoN. —The late Rodney Telegraph,, under this head, has some i interesting remarks. The late Dr. Nutt, a . planter in tho vicinity of that town, had been ■ making an experiment in the culture of Cot ton by amamalgamation of the Mexican with i rhe Egyptian Cotton. The seed procured ! from this planting, was again sown—from which in the next year, (here was seed obtain- . ed sufficient for an acre of ground. . The pro- I duct of this nereis said td be superior in qtiaT i ity to-any other kind of cotton hitherto known ! I he experiment is a matter of much interest i to the planters.— 'Grand Gulf Advertiser. ' Important To Wheat Growers.—A New'Hampshire farmer states in the Newbery port Herald, that his neighbors and himself ! have fully ascertained the fact that the sow ing of the spring wheat is tin effectual reme dy gainst the weevil. They have for three or four years sowed the Black Sea Wheat, from the 20th of May to the Ist of June, and found not the slightest injury from the weevil. i —Those fields sown a few days earlier from I the 15th to the 20th, were slightly affected, 1 and those sown earlier, nearly destroyed. I ■ Cherokee Lands. —Major C. L. Hinton, ] one of the Commi-sionevs to sell the Cherokee lands, returned through this place on last Mon day. He says that the sales amounted to up wards of §300,000, -and that all the lands which had been surveyed were sold except about one thousand dollars woith. The first quality of lands averaged about 16 dollars per acre. A good deal of the lower qualities sold atsmall prices. Maj. Hinton confirms the ac counts heretofore received of the extensive . marble quarries in this region, lie thinks it of as fine a quality as that of which Conova’s statute of Washington was made.— Salisbury (iV. C.) Watchman. A difficulty occurred on Tuesday evening last, in this city, between Mr. E. Plant and a man by tiic name of John Brady, which re- j suited in the death of the latter. A Coroner’s ■ Inquest was held, and*a verdict given, that the deed was committed in self-defence. On Saturday evening last, an affray took place between George S. Loving and William W. Thompson, which also terminated in the death of the latter. We understand, that Loving has made his escape. /In noticing the above melancholy incidents, we are compelled to remark on the inefficien cy of our laws in bringing to the bar of pub lic justice, persons committing capital offences. Under the present mode, a mau-has nothing more to do than to leave the State, or step over to Texas or some other place not farther off, and ho need entertain no fear of being appre hended. So long us such a state of things is permitted to exist, just so long will every man who has an enemy, (and there are but few who have not,) tie in constant danger of being shot down in the streets. We urge it on our tzrvH iti » » - -L im nil ir— bringing such persons to justice, let the cost be what it may.— Macon Telegraph 9lh Oct'.
