FURIOUS ATTACK ON Mk. VAN AM BURGH, OR ASTLEY’3 AMPHITHE. ATRE BY ONE OF HIS TIGERS. Since Wednesday last the principal topic of conversation in the theatrical world’has been the furions attack made on Mr. Van Am burgh, whose exhibition at Astley’s Royal* Amphitheatre of lions, tigers, leopards and other animals of the forest, in the grand zoo'- logical spectacle, entitled the ‘'Lion’Conquer or of Pompeii,” has-excited within thefio few days past so much public attention. Mr. Van Amburgh has been styled by the philotogos of the above equestrian establishment a»the brute tamer, and certainly the appellation is well ap plied us' the following daring feat will prove, for never was the courage or the presence of mind of man put to a severer test. From the information obtained by our reporter yester day, from an authentic source, it appears that bn Wednesday last, a rehearsal was going on in the circus of the theatre, when Mr. Van Amburgh, wishing one of his tigers to per form a certain feat, which the animal was ut terly unable or unwilling to accomplish, had recourse to severe corporeal punishment which chastisement he inflicted with a large horse whip. Smarting under the pain of the lash, the animal became incensed, and suddenly sprang upon Mr. Van Ambirrgh, who instantly ivas hurled with violence to the ground, from the strength and weight of his incensed assail ant. Mr. Van Amburgh who is of Hercu- Jefln case and possessing extraordinary muscu lar powei, instantly perceived the intention of the ani.'dal, which was that of tearing him to pieces, nnJ with the courage and presence of mind which fe' v men possess, seized his foe by itho lip of the low(? r jaw, andjthis pinioned him as a bulldog woulJan ox at a bait. Along and fearful struggle nov'ensued, in t! c course of which both the man aRd the tiger rolled ■ over several times. At length Mr. Aan Am burgh got the better of hie foo by throwing Jiim on his back, at the same time kneeling on his stomach; and, with his other hund, which was till now unengaged, commenced striking the prostrate animal with his clenched fist, the blows followed in quick succession, ovqr the head, face and particularly the nose, until the blood flowed from the subdued animal who here quivered under the grasp of his conquer or. At length Mr. Van Amburgh, perceiving that he had completely overdome him, releas ed his hold, and the anima! finding himself at liberty, retired a short distance from his mas ter, nnd crouched down as if severely suffer ing from the punishment he had received. The Books will continue open nt the same place, for thirty days, when they will be final, ly closed. From the anxiety manifested to obtain shares in the Bank, very little doubt cun now be entertained that tho whole amount IB “** stock will bo promptly taken up. The City Council ami other corporations in this ci ly, and several individuals of large fortunes, have come forward, and set a good example by subscribing for the whole nmount of the j shares, to which they aro entitled, so that the i prospects nro highly fl.nt -ring. We under stand that arrangements have been made for ! * bringing home immediately, in specie, so much of the loan lately effected by Gen. Hamilton, in Europe, ns may bo necessary to put tho Rail Road Bank in operation, without embar rassments to our other moneyed institutions. Accounts from all quarters represent the pro pleas fully prepared to make up the capital of the Bank, and anxious fonts Speedy establish merit. We are informed that the Indians have become rccchciled, and will observe the treaty. Tallnhasse Floridian ■ Treaty with Greece.-— Tho Globe pub. ’ lishes, in the form of a proclamation from the ; President of the United States, a treaty of commerce and navigation between the United States and Greece. It was concluded and signed at London, on the 22d December last, between Andrew Stevenson, Esq., on the part of the United States, and.Spisidia Tricoupi, the Greek Councillor of State, on the part of “His Majesty the King of Greece.” It has been duly ratified on both parts, and the rati fications exchanged at London, on the 25th of June last.
