NEWS ITEMS.
The Government has rented a large
slaughtering house in ( larkesville,
Tenn., and will purchase any quantity
of hogs and beeves during the packing
season.
The Federal forces in Kentucky
which were ad vanci ng down the Louis
ville railroad to meet Gen Buckner,
have fallen back. 1 his is thought to
be a strategic movement.
Judge W. G. Jones, ol the Confeder
ate Court at Mobile, has sustained the
Sequestration Act, by refusing to grant
a motion to quash a writ of garnish
merit under that Act.
Both branches of the Legislature of
Tennessee, says the Memphis “Appeal,’’

the vote for Governor. The following
is the vote as reported :

President Davis has issued a probla*

A letter from Jackson’s river, to ft
gentlem n in this city, written on Sat
urday evening lust, savs a report had

them, and taking a number of prisoners.
The rout of the enemy was in fact com
plete, according to the report. Floyd
is said to have lost three bundled in kill

Richmond, Nov. s.—The Navy Department
received intelligence to-day, that forty-two
vessels were drawn up in line of battle off
Port Royal, S. C., to-day.
Affairs in Western Virginia.
Richmond, Nov. 5—A passenger from the
Jackson River Mountains in Western Virgin
ie, states that a p.irolled Confederate soldier
just in fr >m the Federal camp, reports that
Risencraiuz’s army did not exceed 8.000 effec
tive men, and that much sickness prevailed in
tip ai my. Gen Floyd was at Cotton Hill,
an<l was daily expecting an engagement w th
Rosencrantz, who was only a few miles off
The ResignaHon of Gen. Scott Confirmed.
Richmond N v. s— The Norfolk Day B >ok
of this morning, copies from the Baltimore
papers. Gen Scott’s letter of resignatin to
President I incoin lie says that his resigna
tion is tendered in consequence of bodily in
firmities, which compell him to take the step.
He adds: ‘Tt is with regret that I withdraw
myself, in these momentous times, from the
orders of the President who has treated me
with much distinguished kindness and cour
tesy —from the President whom I know, from
much personal intercourse, to be patriotic
without sectional partialities or prejudices.”
The Cabinet conveued on Friday, and ac
cepted his resignation, allowing him to draw
his pay as a retired officer.

Savannah. Nov.7—The steamer Resolute
of the Confederate fleet, came up at eleven
o’clock last night, to receive coal, and brought
correct particulars of the operation at Port
Royal, tip to dam.
It appears that the report of the disabled
steamer and another aground, is incorrect.
On Monday afternoon, Comm >doreTattnall
with his little fl et went within ore mile of
the Federal squadron, and engaged them I>r
nearly an hour until they came within range
o f the guns a’the Port when he retired and
allowed the latter to open upon them, The
engagement lasted until late in the evening.

The Commodore sailed out to the Port
above, three quarters of a mile from the ene
my when a fierce engagement of forty minutes
ensued. The enemy fired rifled shot and
shell, which fell about us in great profusion.
Two shots passed through the Savannah,
without serious damage to the vessel No
body on board was injured.

onr fleet, took effect in the Federal vessels.—
The latter coming in closer, our fleet retired.
Yesterday all was quier.
It is reported that the Fedcrals were land
ing at Hunting Island on yesterday.
The firing at Port Royal is now heard. It
