She added there is also a danger of starting a child as young as 5 in serious ath letic training. “They get burned out by the age of 12,” said Lumpkin. “For them it was a bad expe rience and they drop out. The reason is because of the parents.” “CTSA is concerned that youth sports has become too focused on winning at the exclusion of the child’s well being,” said Ron Stratten, CTSA chair and vice-presi dent of education services at the NCAA. “Youth sports offer children wonderful benefits, including fitness and character development. The popularity of this hunt has increased since it was introduced in 2003, and in response the number of quota permits and areas in which to hunt have grown. This year, hunters will again have a chance at one of 500 permits and will be allowed to choose a hunt location from a larger choice of areas. The season is Sept. 9-Oct. 1 but the deadline to submit an application is July 31. Selected hunters will be notified in early August and will have the opportunity to attend one of several volun tary training sessions.
