After receiving a couple of calls in refer ence to a white male fitting the description in the area, Patrol officers determined the suspect used the phone at the Days Inn to contact a family member. Mules said officers refer enced the call made from the Days Inn at 7:23 a.m. and tracked the call to 402 Oakview Square in Warner Robins. LOCAL Heroes in our midst By KRISTY WARREN HDJ Staff Writer On Friday, Lt. Peter Gruters of Robins Air Force Base was honored by the national Heroes in Our Midst program. Gruters is a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters. His “Little” is Warner Robins Middle School student John Moss. The two were paired over a year and a half ago by Brooke Bullard of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Warner Robins, who said this was an exciting day for her. Heroes in Our Midst present ed Gruters with a medallion and a check in his honor was donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia. Heroes in Our Mmidst recognizes one person from a different state each month who is quietly mak ing a difference in someone’s life. RAFB officers, BBBS staff, media, John’s mother, and his schoolmates were all in atten dance to show their appreciation for Gunter’s dedication. In his words of thanks, Gruters mined the employee will be provided a one-time job offer. O’Hara said this was the fifth in a series of agree ments. The previous agree ments established a part nership counsel to focus on issues. With the school-based program, all base personnel are given the oppor tunity to visit area elementary or middle schools for one hour each week using administrative leave. Gruters went a step fur ther and volunteered for com munity based mentoring, where he is able to pick up his “Little” and they are able to go places. Gruters and John enjoy all types of activities together. They go swimming, bowling, to the movies and have been to Six Flags a couple times, says John’s mom, Julie Moss. She says that, as well as working and mentor ing to her son, Lt. Gruters also stabled a new way of pro moting/advancing employ ees from intermediate to journeyman status. Moss is proud of her son’s positive experience. “He used to be shy, now he’s more assertive and ready to take things on,” she says. “He’s excited about things.” Heroes in Our Midst is spon sored by the Greeting Card Association and was drawn to BBBS “because of its similar commitment to fostering the personal connections and emo tional sharing that can make our lives meaningful,” says Valerie Cooper, GCA executive vice president in documents provided by Heroes in Our Midst. Like the time and care it takes to pick out, write, and mail a card, it also takes time and care to mentor.
