Heroes in our midst
By KRISTY WARREN
HDJ Staff Writer
On Friday, Lt. Peter Gruters
of Robins Air Force Base was
honored by the national Heroes
in Our Midst program.
Gruters is a mentor through
Big Brothers Big Sisters. His
“Little” is Warner Robins Middle
School student John Moss. The
two were paired over a year and
a half ago by Brooke Bullard
of Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Warner Robins, who said this
was an exciting day for her.
Heroes in Our Midst present
ed Gruters with a medallion and
a check in his honor was donated
to Big Brothers Big Sisters of
the Heart of Georgia. Heroes
in Our Mmidst recognizes one
person from a different state
each month who is quietly mak
ing a difference in someone’s
life. RAFB officers, BBBS staff,
media, John’s mother, and his
schoolmates were all in atten
dance to show their appreciation
for Gunter’s dedication.
In his words of thanks, Gruters
mined the employee will
be provided a one-time job
offer.
O’Hara said this was the
fifth in a series of agree

said that “the ultimate reward is
making a difference in some
one’s life.”
He said that this has been
a life changing experience. “I
grew up in a single-family home
like John,” Gunter says, “and I
feel it is important for a young
man to have a male mentor to
lean on.”
BBBS has joined with Robins
Air Force Base to create the
REACH, program. With the
school-based program, all base
personnel are given the oppor
tunity to visit area elementary
or middle schools for one hour
each week using administrative
leave. Gruters went a step fur
ther and volunteered for com
munity based mentoring, where
he is able to pick up his “Little”
and they are able to go places.
Gruters and John enjoy all
types of activities together.
They go swimming, bowling, to
the movies and have been to Six
Flags a couple times, says John’s
mom, Julie Moss. She says that,
as well as working and mentor
ing to her son, Lt. Gruters also
stabled a new way of pro
moting/advancing employ
ees from intermediate to
journeyman status.

Moss is proud of her son’s

“He used to be shy, now he’s

Heroes in Our Midst is spon
sored by the Greeting Card
Association and was drawn to
BBBS “because of its similar
commitment to fostering the
personal connections and emo
tional sharing that can make our
lives meaningful,” says Valerie
Cooper, GCA executive vice
president in documents provided
by Heroes in Our Midst. Like
the time and care it takes to pick
out, write, and mail a card, it also
takes time and care to mentor.
The program encourages
everyone in the community to
send a word of thanks to Gruters
and mentors like him. A card
can be mailed to him at: Lt. Peter
