HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL 21 st Century Partnership studies scholarship ByRAYUGHTNER HHJ Staff Writer Two ideas were proposed, to the 21st Century part nership, during their regu lar meeting recently, to help the employees at Robins Air Force Base. Executive Director Mary Therese Tebbe proposed a scholarship to the member ship. The scholarship, funded by annual dues ($25), Tebbe said would be “encouraging kids to get engaged in math and science. I think it would be a nice way to start off the school year.” Tebbe said that in the long-term, it helps the base replace skilled labor that is approaching retirement age. Nicole Katsikides, Georgia Department of Community Affairs regional representa tive, had another idea. She asked if the 21st Century Partnership could sponsor a job fair for lieutenants at Robins being forced out of the Air Force. “I don’t know if this orga nization can help,” she said. Sanders attends ACCG revenue, finance meeting Special to the HHJ ATLANTA - Houston County Commissioner Ned Sanders participated in ACCG’s Revenue and Finance Policy meeting June 21 at Cuscowilla in Putnam County. Sanders, along with more than 40 other county com missioners and officials from across the state met to discuss issues affect ing Houston County and other counties throughout Georgia. Some 34 will be allowed to remain on active duty while the others have until Sept. 29. Their options include transferring to other branches of the military or applying for the few posi tions open in other units. Some are applying for civilian and reserve jobs at Robins. Retired Gen. Ron Smith said he would personally “try to get a hold on this. I don’t think we should lose them as a group. “ Chairman Eddie Wiggins, in turn, said he’d take it “as a point of action.” The Partnership also set September for the end of its fund-raising campaign. “Hopefully by Labor Day,” said Capitol Campaign Chairman Ben Henson, “we won’t have to talk about fund-raising again and can focus on business. Donatioi s or sponsorships ment services, in order to decrease the burden on all tax payers. “It is critical for our county officials to have an active level of involvement in ACCG’s policy commit tees,” said ACCG Executive Director Jerry Griffin. “As we develop our policy plat form for the 2007 Session of the General Assembly, Chairman Sanders’s partici pation ensures that issues of importance to Houston County are accurately included, addressed and rep resented.” ACCG’s six standing policy committees include Natural Resources and Environment, Public Safety and the Courts, General County Government, Health and Human Services, Community Calendar are set at bronze, silver, gold, platinum and platinum plus levels for contributions and sponsorships. Donors will be given lapel pins for contribu tions. The bronze level is dona tions of $25 to $99, silver is SIOO to $499, gold is SSOO to SI,OOO and platinum is above SI,OOO. Partners sponsorships begin at the bronze level of $5,000 to $14,999, silver at $15,000 to $24,999, platinum from $35,000 to $49,999 and platinum-plus for donations over $50,000. Houston County Commissioner Tom McMichael noted the county has budgeted $50,000-plus a year to donate to the 21st Century Partnership The goal is $340,000 a year for the next five years, which will be building a SIOO,OO a year surplus each year for unexpected occur rences. It does not include travel, however, as members are required to pay their own way to Washington and elsewhere for lobbying trips. Revenue and Finance and Economic Development and Transportation. Each, through committee delibera tions that begin in the sum mer, form consensus among county officials statewide, and advocate these posi tions before the General Assembly.
