That belongs to the Azzurri, 5-3 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw. Outplayed for an hour and into extra time, the Italians won it after French captain Zinedine Zidane was ejected in the 107th for a vicious butt to the chest of Marco Materazzi. It was the ugliest act of a tournament that set records for yellow and red cards, diving and, at times, outright brutality. Without their leader for the shootout, the French only missed once. But Italy, rarely strong in such situations, made all five. Fabio Grosso clinched the Azzurri's fourth championship. Only Brazil has more World Cups, five. (AP) _ Kentucky Derby winner Barbara has developed “potentially serious” compli cations to his injured right hind leg, and underwent surgery to treat a new infection. The infection developed in the leg where a titanium plate and 27 screws were inserted after the 3-year-old colt shattered three bones at the start of the Preakness on May 20. The hardware was replaced and the infection treated Saturday night after Barbara showed discomfort and had a “consistently” high fever. In a statement released by the hos pital Sunday, Dr. Dean Richardson emphasized that the complications are “potentially serious.” James inks deal with Cavs CLEVELAND (AP) _ Cleveland All- Star forward Leßron James accepted a five-year contract extension worth START From page 1A more than likely based on their 11-7 record and how those above and below them stand) will play seed No. 5 (right now the Cardinals but the White Sox have a chance of leapfrogging over them) at 7 p.m. at Peach County High School. That will get every team through the rotation once. From there it’s a combi nation of first-round losers versus each other - those games slated for Friday, 7 p.m. and at Peach County and Westside. Saturday at Westside (Bibb County Sports Complex) the winners will face off against each other, those games at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respec tively. All those games will be played at Westside with times of: 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. At stake when it’s all said and done, will be a trophy. That might have seemed like a given but it actually hasn’t been the case up until this past year, Dunn said. “It always seemed to fall through,” he said. “That’s one thing that was kind of weird about it. In the past there really wasn’t a good tradition to it. “Teams didn’t last or we’d change presidents. It was like everybody was after the division and if they didn’t win that, things just kind of fell apart.” That changed last year, Dunn said, by adding the trophy, which in turn was won by the Nationals. (Dunn added he’s still looking for a home for the trophy, i.e. at the sponsor’s business, and that being if they can get a sponsor to come on board - and that is versus the tro phy sitting on the shelf at the club manager’s house). Now, it will be called the Rosenberg Championship in honor of the league’s found ing father who passed away recently. As far as who’s hot and who’s not heading into the playoffs, the Nationals, who unseated the Thomaston Tigers last year for the championship, clearly have the upper hand, he said. “They just love to play hardball,” he said. “They love the game.” But, he added, don’t count out the Red Sox - the team he’s on - or the Eagles. Plus, “The Astros have gotten a lot better since they added a new pitcher and catcher and the White Sox are ‘real good,’ provided they all show up,” he said.
