ptcmsitm HJourmtl SATURDAY, JULY 14, 2006 V.: r Jk Sherri Martin The Front Porch perry.dda@pe rry-ga.gov Everyday costs My husaband heard me rattling around in my makeup case the other morning. He called out his usual, “It ain’t going to help!” and I answered my usual, “I love you too!” A few minutes passed, and they were quite productive minutes of thought for him, as evidenced by our next conversation. “Just for the sake of argu ment, and not because I want it to happen or anything, but how much money would we save per year if you quit wearing makeup?” He is such a comedian in the wee hours of the morn ing. “I don’t know. Maybe SIOO. I have no idea,” I replied. I don’t do math in the wee hours of the morn ing. “Is that all? Well how about your hair? How much would we save if you just let your hair go? Does that make you feel guilty?” he rejoined. Well I could see where this conversation was going. I had to think fast, which was possible as long as it didn’t involve adding or subtract ing. “How much would we save if you quit shaving and we didn’t have to by shaving cream? Or how about if you quit wearing deodorant?” There, that ought to show him. The conversation just pro gressed from there. “How much would we save if you didn’t charge up your trolling motor every month?” “How much would we save if you didn’t buy a Sunday paper every weekend?” “How much would we save if we didn’t have the dogs?” We both agreed that the dogs were worth the money we spend on them, although we disagreed on which dog was more cost effective. “My dog doesn’t have as many issues as your dog,” I reminded him. “But he’s still just a puppy,” he said. Right. That dog is going to be “just a puppy” all of his life, it seems. In order to get my mind off his dog, my husband had to pull a diversionary tactic. “How much would we save if we had an orange tree in the backyard and never had to buy you orange juice again?” Now he was hitting me where it hurt. I have to have my morning cup of orange juice or I’m not fit for any thing - makeup, math or motherhood. Then the conversation just got silly. We decided we needed an apple tree, a coffee tree and a poptart tree, although we weren’t sure if poptarts should grow on a tree, on a bush or on a vine. I particularly like the vine idea. No more going to the gro cery store for cherry pop tarts - I’ll just step out to the pastry arbor and pick some fresh! We stopped short of say ing we needed a money tree.
