Tidbits ALABAMA —Desmond Doss, the only consci entious objector to receive the Medal of Honor for non-combat achievements in World War 11, stayed atop a cliff under attack on the island of Okinawa to lower 75 wounded soldiers to safety on May 5, 1945. He died in March in Piedmont (pop. 5,120) at age 87. ARKANSAS —In 2001, the state honored Daisy Gatson Bates with a state holiday, the first African-American woman to achieve the honor. Bates helped organize and inspire the nine Afri can-American students who integrated Central High School in 1957 in Little Rock. FLORIDA —-The state's first Olympic-size swim ming pool, the Casino Pool, opened in 1928 in Fort Lau deidale. The nation's top swimmers, including Katherine Rawls, who earned more than .50 national titles for swim ming and diving, trained in die saltwater pool. GEORGlA —Charles D.
