Man arrested in
double deaths
SENOIA (AP) - Authorities
have arrested a man they
say killed his father and
stepmother.
Deputies were called to
the home Monday night
and found two bodies in
the kitchen area. The man
and his wife died of mul
tiple injuries, including pos
sible stab wounds, Coweta
County Sheriffs Maj. James
Yarborough told WSB-TV
Timothy Wayne Coalson,
44, was arrested after Coweta
County authorities found
him in the woods behind the
couple’s home.
The victims’ names were
not immediately released.
No indictments for
ex-officers in case
MARSHALLVILLE (AP)
- Six months after a man
died in police custody,
sparking unrest in a small
Georgia town, a grand jury
has declined to indict two
former police officers.
The Jan. 19 death of
Clarence “Clint” Walker
prompted what some have
called a riot in Marshallville
and, a few hours later, the
torching of the police chiefs
home. Walker, 48, died after
city police officers Anthony
Taylor and Brandon Williams
tried to arrest him on charg
es of parole violation, simple
battery and obstruction of a
law enforcement officer.
But the Macon County
grand jury did not find evi
dence to support indictments
against Taylor and Williams
for involuntary manslaugh
ter, simple battery or violat
ing their oaths of office.
Cecilia Cooper, dis
trict attorney for the
Southwestern Judicial
Circuit, said an autopsy
and toxicology test found
cocaine, cocaine metabolites
and alcohol in Walker’s sys
tem.
His body had some scratch-

Killer admits
Melendi murder
ATLANTA (AP) - A man
convicted of killing an
Emory University student
told authorities Monday in
chilling detail how he raped
and murdered the victim and
then burned the body and
spread the woman’s ashes, a
prosecutor said.
Colvin Hinton made the
confession in an interview
with police at the state pris
on in Reidsville, where he is
serving a life sentence after
being convicted last year of
the 1994 murder of Shannon
Melendi, DeKalb County
District Attorney Gwendolyn
Keyes Fleming said.
Melendi’s body has never
been recovered; Based on
Hinton’s claim of how he
disposed of it, it is unlike
ly that Melendi’s remains
will ever be found, though
authorities will try.
“There were nothing bus
ashes left,” Keyes Fleming
said Hinton told authorities.
She described the confes
sion as “what may be the
final chapter in the Shannon
Melendi case.”
The 19-year-old Miami
woman disappeared after
leaving a softball field near
Decatur. Melendi’s father
said in a telephone inter
view with The Associated
Press that someone connect

“Somebody let me know
they had a meeting this
morning and let me know he
confessed,” Melendi said.
He declined to elaborate.
The prosecutor said Hinton
told police he kidnapped
Melendi at knifepoint from
the softball field, took her to
his home, tied her up, raped
her and later strangled her.
He then burned the body
in several fire pits he dug in
his backyard and disposed of
the ashes somewhere else,
Keyes Fleming said.
