Then they actually get to show off a little bit of their skills ... repetition, repetition, repeti tion. “(Strength is) extremely important. Because we are competing against teams from Atlanta who have had programs for many years - where we’ve only had it for a few years - we have to get up to their level. The way to do it is to get stronger, faster and to build muscles they didn’t know they had.” For voluntary workouts, the Lady Bear players have turned out in big numbers day after day. Jones said the lightest attendance for one day was 18 while the greatest number was 24. High school volleyball doesn’t have a “feeder” pro gram through the middle school, so for some who try out for Houston County High the most experience they’ve had is through physical edu cation classes. Last year was the first in which Houston County High had a junior varsity volley ball team “ What you look for there is, ‘Do they have athletic abil ity,”’ said Jones about work ing novice players into the high school squad. “If they have athletic ability, then, ‘can they pick up the skills quick enough.’ For the most part what you do is team CROP From page IB is that when batting, a wad of whatever protects their jaw if they are hit by a pitch. Also, seeds, tobacco, and gum keep the mouth moist. I had to give up playing baseball because I couldn’t master cracking the shell to get to the seed. I became impatient and ate the whole thing. Works better than any fiber cereal but makes me mighty thirsty. My problem is that I haven’t evolved. I’m forced to stick with Jolly Rancher fat-free candies. They keep my mouth watered but have one major drawback. When I’m at the field in 100-degree temperatures, the candy melts a little and sticks to the wrappers. I’ve missed many a play try ing to get them unwrapped. That should explain some of my calls on the field. As a result, I have regressed. Head from Jackson leads that series at Silver Dollar and was part of the team representing Silver Dollar at Bristol) won with a reaction time of .049, ET them up with somebody who has some experience and can teach them those skills. “Most of them, they’ve played volleyball before in gym class. They kind of know the game, the rules, but at the competitive level it’s kind of amped up. They have to learn the amp part, the quicker pace and how to hit the ball correctly, learn how to serve.” At next week’s University of Florida camp, Jones is hoping to build, among other things, teamwork and team building through one game after another against tough high school competition. “This is the first time we’ve taken the volleyball program to camp, so we’re really excit ed about that,” said Jones. “We’ll see what the girls are made of because we will play against some of the best from Florida and some of the best in southern Georgia.” Be not worried that the Lady Bears would be over whelmed by what they would see in Gainesville. That’s what Jones is hoping for. He said that’s how they will get better and more prepared for the likes of Starr’s Mill. “We mark ourselves based on Starr’s Mill,” he said. “It’s just a well-respected program across the state. We will go (to Gainesville) and play a lot of that level.” It won’t just be a learning experience for the players, but the coaches as well. Florida has one of the top volleyball teams in the Southeastern Conference, and Jones said encourages expectoration is an anatheiiia to me. No, “Polly want a sunflow er seed,” for me. That begs the question, how far have we come from our barbarian days? We still have the primal urge to win and to rejoice in that victory. It seems, though, that our pleasures are few and far between. How often do we compete in something, replete with sunflower seeds, just for the sake of the com petition? But he knew this kind of experience would be helpful, so before this summer began he did the research to find a camp that would work out for the Lady Bears to attend. It also helped to find one that would give them the right “bang for their buck.” As for the progression of Lady Bear volleyball over the past four years, Jones said the win total is definitely ris ing year after year to the point where last year’s squad finished at .500 with a school record number of victories. The disappointment of the 2005 season, though, was los ingthe County Championship game to Warner Robins High after Houston County had beaten all three of its county competitors. “We’re looking for bigger and better things,” he said. “In the little (post-practice) pow-wow we had, I chal lenged them that one, we want to win the County Championship this year - if we’re going to win, we want to win them all - and we want to have a winning record this year.” start reflecting on your evo lution. Ask yourself why you compete or don’t compete. Remember, everything in life is a contest, and we as a nation are among the most competitive people in the world. But we have begun to miss an important ingredient that is found in sports. We have evolved past it. We have for gotten to have fun. It’s ironic that sunflowers once represented beauty and peace, but they have sown bitter seeds. m j>neiobatatime£ 3B 0003 583 7
