10A ♦ THURSDAY, JULY 20, 2006 GPB to air special on Georgia state parks Special to the Journal ATLANTA - In 1931, Indian Springs in Flovilla and Vogel in Blairsville became Georgia’s first state parks, creating one of the oldest state park systems in the nation. As part of the system’s 75th Anniversary celebra tion taking place through out 2006, the GPB Original Production “Sites to Behold: The History of Georgia’s State Parks” captures the fabulous stories of the people and places associ ated with Georgia’s 63 state parks and historic sites across the state. It is narrated by singer songwriter Shawn Mulliins (famous for “Lullaby”) and includes interviews with men who helped build many state parks, long-time visitors and park employ ees, Gov. Sonny Perdue, President Jimmy Carter, historians and many oth ers. “Sites to Behold” pre mieres July 26 at 8 p.m. and encores July 28 at 7 p.m. and July 30 at 6 p.m. The film captures the natural history of Georgia’s state parks, which encom passes the tallest water fall east of the Mississippi River, the largest fresh water swamp in the U.S., spectacular views from Cloudland and Providence canyons, a 100-acre gran ite mountain, and a nearly pristine barrier island, not to mention longleaf pine, river, marsh, and wiregrass ecosystems. The stories the parks and sites tell, and that “Sites to Behold” shares, are those of pre-Colombian explor ers, colonial Georgia, the Revolutionary and Civil wars, of ancient Native American cultures and the Cherokee Nation, and the country’s first gold rush. * “Sites to Behold” also highlights some of the most remarkable stories from Georgia’s state parks and historic sites, profiling people who laid down the foundation that made these Georgia wonders possible. The development of Georgia’s state park sys tem benefited from the Emergency Conservation Work Act, part of President HOLDS From page 1A offered his opinion by saying that he thought that requir ing people to vote at two different places would cause “mass confusion.” The idea of putting the ref erendums on a special elec tion ballot in March 2007 was also knocked down by council. If the referendums passed, they would not be implemented until the fol lowing year. Consequently, holding the election earli er in the year would serve no purpose, according to Edwards. “Not enough property taxes to make it worth while,” Councilman Sherod Wilson said.in reference to a March special election. In other business: ■ Council voted to pro mote Municipal Court Clerk Sara Bowden to Judicial Department Head. This is a newly-created position which will give her a pay increase from $15.12 per hour to $16.36 per hour. ■ Council voted to change the method of voting to an optical scanning machine system. The Houston County Board of Elections is donating two machines to the city. ■ The council decided to have a joint work ses sion with the Downtown Development Authority on July 25 at 6 p.m. Ll* l*H 136 •—7-W77 3561 e Franklin D.
